Trying to crash the economy, and make the lower classes destitute

Hello all. I am currently playing a game with the HPM mod, and am trying to find a way to crash my economy so that my lower classes will be made destitute and turn into Serfs.

In effect I am trying to create a medieval like society inside of the game. Any help is appreciated.

Tariffs kill artisans (and factories).
For miners and farmers, best way is to get them unemployed, but that's gonna cost you a lot.

Shut down any factories that pop up and keep taxes high. Prevent any promotion. Eventually as other countries industrialize and ramp up production, demand for the raw materials produced by your nation will drop. I haven't tried this but it should impoverish your country.

Be prepared for rebellions the like has never been seen in any Paradox game.

Thank you to everyone who responded. You solutions worked like a charm, I was able to enslave a good portion of my population, and ended up making the Russian Empire look like a hyper-advanced modern liberal country.

Also, the rebellions were surprisingly easy to deal with. Every so often 15-25 regiments would spawn and would usually be too spread out to make a stack.

I've never had major issues with rebellions. Some folks do, however, so I thought a warning would be appropriate.

That, and learning to use that anti-rebellion button that podcat added to the military units so I did not have to chase down rebellions manually, unless a really large army appears.
