Hey guys, I just wanted to throw a few words of praise in your way, based on the experiences I had in a game that I'm playing. A little bit of background... I played Nationalist China quite a lot in HOI2/DD/Armageddon. I used the Determined AI Mod (DAIM) and the Consolidated China Improvement Pack (CCIP) in those days, because their features were necessary to make China even remotely enjoyable to play. I've always found Nationalist (and even Communist) China to be the most interesting nations to play, and by far my favorites.

So after playing a few games online with my friends (One as the UK and one as Turkey...lol), I decided I'd give Nationalist China a shot. Suffice it to say, I was more than surprised at just how difficult a situation I was thrust into. Sure, I had all of the starting units that I was used to having from Doomsday/Armageddon, but the IC situation was... shall I say... depressing. I won't go into too much detail, because this isn't an AAR, but after making Peace with the communists and annexing half of Guangxi through the event-driven surrender that they have, I was smacked with Japan's declaration of war in June 1937 (along with Manchuko and Sinkiang, who had joined Japan just before).

6 Years, 11 Months and a handful of days later, Japan surrendered as my troops more or less staggered across the Korean border. It was by far the most fully engrossing experience I've ever had in a Paradox game. I went from barely being able to defend Shanxi's borders to fending off Japanese incursions from Indochina, to suddenly and unexpectedly seeing a Japanese breakthrough from Hong Kong to pushing the Japanese back to the Manchurian border, and finally pushing most of their troops into Northern Manchuria, where they would be cut off after I annexed Manchuko. It was unbelievably gratifying.

To give some perspective, it usually took me til late 1938 or mid 1939 to defeat Japan in Doomsday/Armageddon (even with DAIM and CCIP). I didn't do anything gamey or anything like that. I played the game like China should... that is... using my manpower as my greatest asset.

I just wanted to come here and personally thank everyone who had a hand in developing this great game. I look forward to lots more great times playing!

Yeah, theres something always different going on in Asia, for example I'm playing as the US (again) and right now Yunnan (DOWed), Sinkiang, Communist China, Japan, and Manchuria are taking on Nationalist China. Com China demanded land from Japan and declared war on Shanxi and literally has all north of China, while Japan has to do an amphibious landing on the northeast and take Nat Chinas capital. Nat China took out Yunnan and is in the middle of taking out Sinkiang, but is slowly being beaten back by the communists (mostly).

EDIT: I'll get the picture up later, right now I'm using a separate computer and this one can't play AoD and I don't have internet on my laptop cause I'm visiting a family member who doesn't have wi-fi.

AOD is really really solid and very enjoyable, playing as the Soviets and it actually felt exciting, being pushed back so far but still managing to turn it all around somehow. Might have a go of China next, you made it out to sound very interesting.

Okay I got it.

I've never seen an Asian country demand land from Japan and get it. I don't know what Nationalist China did to get a 5 front war but they screwed themselves pretty bad.

Taiwan was freely handed over to communist China??? That is amazing - and the biggest parody of all since the mere idea is insane in realy life.

That's why I tend to add all of those Japanese islands + Port Arthur (Dalian) as claims for Japan in case other countries, potentially friendly ones, have claims on them.

The only real complaint I have with China, and I think this stems from the way the game was originally designed, is that you can't ever really become a major player within the scope of the game.

To follow up on my original post, It's now June 1951 in my game. The world (minus me) is still at war with Japan. In January of 1946 I started a sort of '5 year plan', building nothing but Industry and Infrastructure. I jumped from something like ~110 available IC to ~ 265. My resources are starting to look very shaky, as I'm seeing deficits of around 40 per day on Energy, Metal and Rare Materials. It's not the end of the world, I suppose. If things get really ugly in terms of resources I could always invade the now independent India. I also have a number of Synthetic Oil and Synthetic Materials plants which will be able to cover the deficits in those areas if needed... if I could get energy. I'd love to research Nuclear Power Plants... for the energy, not the bombs. This brings me to the actual issue.

I've always thought that the HOI2 game, as it was built, and as it is now, is too static, too fixed if you will. As I mentioned, it's 1951, and I FINALLY got a nuclear tech team as China. But that's a long way to go to research those technologies. The thing that kills me about playing China is that the most fun part about the game is losing millions of Men fighting the Japanese. Once you've united China, you have no real natural enemies. There's the Soviets, but usually they're going to leave you alone unless Communist China is still around and Germany/Japan are defeated (assuming a historical-ish game). India is freed via event shortly after WW2, and the Allies don't have any reason to mess with China after that happens.

Even if I was left alone, my tech teams are mostly all level 1 or level 2. Yes, there are the events that raise or lower the skill of your tech teams, but they just don't happen frequently enough, or with enough consistency to actually represent the transition from a broken Warlord state to an industrial power. Perhaps that's because China is one of the only nations capable of that transition. More dynamic tech teams that grow or regress based on the relative industrial power of a nation would have been an excellent implementation for this game.

I'm not really sure what I'm getting at. I think it's just that I've enjoyed so much about my current game that I'm left wanting more after the dust has settled. From the early wars and setbacks to becoming one of the top-5 most industrialized nations in the world without reaching outside of my cores, I've had a prosperous game.

Now... If I could only get the US to finish off Japan so that the next War can start...

Well in all fairness, China didn't become a major player outside of Asia for many decades after reunion

Yeah, that's very true. I think I'm just a little bit too used to games like Victoria and EU3 where you have at least a century to adjust history to your liking. Then you start to play AoD, and you have like 22 minutes. Not really a complaint. It's just that life isn't fair. :D
