I'm in the UK so it may be my definition of a roundabout does not correlate with other countries.

But CSL roundabouts are not true roundabouts in terms of the right-of-way mechanics. A UK roundabout always gives priority to traffic already on the roundabout - and traffic on a roundabout never stops unless there are cars in front. By CSL making a circle out of the existing roads and their junctions, a different logic is achieved whereby traffic on the roundabout can stop and give way to more traffic entering the roundabout.

It would be nice to see what I think of as true roundabout logic :)

The concept of traffic on the roundabout having priority holds true for the netherlands as well so it might not be a british only thing per say. But it is true the pathfinding and the programming of behavior of automata on the roads could use a little upgrade in the future.

This applies not only to roundabouts, but all "yield" conditions on any road or merge. There is usually one movement that has the right-of-way, while the other movement is forced to wait for the necessary gap to merge. Unfortunately, this is not how traffic works right now at any intersection. It's a free for all. This adjustment will be required for roundabouts, as well as slip lanes, merging roads, and acceleration lanes.

+1

I would really love to see some way to achieve such things in game...

I agree. There should be a special "roundabout road" that applies the needed rules.

And it/they should be a reasonable size. I know there's a thread in the main forum with people posting photos of mega-roundabouts that are nearly as big as the ones in game but we need small, purpose built assets. For example, the outer diameter of a local road roundabout should be no more than two times the width of the road. I'm talking small like this:

I dunno, I think it depends on the local situation.
I have never seen such a small one for example.

In the netherlands they can fit about 8 cars with safe distance between on a local roundabout (so that is about 2 cars per quarter)
This gives drivers a bit of room/time to get on the roundabout.
Not everyone drives like the Stig ;)

CO could easily make a two lane roundabout that fits within 4 map squares rather than the monstrosity on offer right now. Furthermore, by making it a discrete asset rather than making a faux roundabout out of ordinary roads it could, as the OP suggests, function as a roundabout.

If there was just a UI widget that allowed us to select an intersection and adjust the traffic rules for that intersection, it would solve all of our problems designing road networks. I do not envy the person who would be tasked with figuring out how to do this in an intuitive way, however. It would be... tricky. For that reason I am skeptical we will get that level of control. =(

Why talking small ?)
Swindon's Magic Roundabout (South West England)

The Highway Code (UK) -- actually good reading with pictures
§4 Roundabouts (184 to 190)
190 Multiple roundabouts. At some complex junctions, there may be a series of mini-roundabouts at each intersection. Treat each mini-roundabout separately and follow the normal rules.

A few intersection modifier tools would be awesome and most could be achieved with 2 new buttons. I don't think the UI / it being intuitive would be the difficult part.

Activate the lane tool which would then highlight the turn arrows when you mouse over, allowing a single click to toggle its direction between those available.
Activate the junction type tool which would then highlight the entire junction section when you most over, allowing a single click to toggle lights or not.

Of course, there would be a lot more to it than that to implement.

Shouldn't roundabouts just be a ploppable or asset you create and not something you can make from roads? That would help wouldn't it?

Or if that's too much work, just have a tool where you can change the intersection status, so that some roads have priority over others or have lights etc.

Not entirely true. As the overall of this is true, you have (atleast in the Netherlands) roundabouts, often large ones, where there are traffic lights on the roundabout itself. These lights would adjust to each other to allow a good traffic flow thought.

I would not recommend this. Every situation needs a different kind of roundabout. In CiM2 it was possible to make tons of different roundabouts serving low and high amount of traffic.
I prefer being able to make them myself (altho they are not yet effective due to the U-turn possibility).

I would much rather make my own too, than just ploppable preconfigured 'special case' roundabouts. As above, CIM2's road tools outshine what we have available in CSL atm, even then there was room for improvement, except for some odd reason, CO took a step or two backwards.
