I don't see a thread for general small questions, so I guess I'll make a thread.

I'm trying to draw a series of offensive lines for a battle plan. I've seen some people do it where they set up one line, and then they set up another offensive line a bit after that, and so on and so forth. That lets you queue up different stages of an invasion to fire individually. Something like in this screenshot I saw:

I can kinda do that, sometimes, by trial and error. I've managed to set up something similar after working at it for a bit:

The only problem is that the succeeding offensive lines rarely connect together in order. That setup probably took me at least fifteen minutes of trial and error. Usually I get something like this, where the new offensive line I'm trying to add is connected to an offensive line a few steps back, like this:

What makes the game decide that my new offensive line is connected to the line three lines behind it instead of the one immediately preceding it? Sometimes I'll draw a line slightly differently and the connecting offensive line will suddenly change to a completely different offensive line, and I can't figure out any rhyme or reason. Is there something I'm missing?
