Yeah, I'd hate it if this AAR was abandoned...

I won't abandon this AAR. I'm just a bit busy with other things [mainly the making of a new HOI map].
I will continue it as soon as I have spare time ;]

But since you brought this up I will have to update it, probably today or tomorrow ^^

SLOWDOWN

Burma

1942, March 25th

After the loss of Rangoon, British decide to abandon Burma and defend near the Indian border. The few divisions they had facing the Japanese in the frontlines, were forced to retreat. But, due to lack of food, water and constant IJAAF air raids, few British soldiers reached the safety of India. It seemed that IJA was unstoppable, but everything changed during March...

The swift Japanese offensive is quickly stopped by the fresh Allied reinforcements from India, Middle East and Africa. Free French and ANZAC soldiers also arrive to support the defense of India and soon the Japanese attacks are repelled for the first time. After the failed attempt to take Imphal the Allies counterattack and push the IJA out of Chittagong. Presence of enemy armored units completely destroy the hopes of braking through and Kotohito orders his generals to dig in and defend. All in all, 30 IJA divisions are tied up in Burma. So far they are facing a similar number of Allied divisions, but the enemy is slowly receiving more reinforcements. Japanese, on the other hand, can’t spare any more divisions for Burma. This could prove to be disastrous in the future!

burmafrontge9.png

Hirohito’s dreams about Indian resources and manpower evaporate and holding Burma becomes the new main objective in the region. The best IJA leaders are assigned to Burma, but they can’t do miracles. The enemy is growing and Japanese are forced to turn to local population for support. Soon new Indian and Burmese reserve divisions begin taking shape as thousands of men join the fight against their former oppressors. Every new recruit knows that this is a rare opportunity to earn their freedom and the fact, that the Japanese Emperor respects Thai neutrality, furthermore strengthens their belief in Japan.

Dangerous Waters

1942, March 20th – March 24th

The invasion of Philippines is going much smoother than expected. Nevertheless, three new cavalry divisions are transported from Borneo to the island of Leyte. Few days later, US intelligence receives some vital information about the Japanese troop movement to and from Philippines and decides to intercept the IJN transports soon to be heading from Leyte. USS Enterprise and her escorts are deployed to carry out this operation and, on March 20th, the USN fleet ambushes the unprotected Japanese transport ships right after they leave the harbor of Leyte.

Several transport ships are sunk after the first air attack, but the remaining Japanese ship captains manage to outrun the slow enemy carrier fleet and inform all nearby IJN fleets about this intrusion. The first one to pick up this message is Yamamoto. Confident of victory he orders his fleet to move to Surigao Strait and stop the Americans before they cause even more damage. Hours later, the first wave of IJNAF and ground based IJAAF airplanes hit the enemy fleet.

surigaohc9.png

Both captains are skilled and try to outmanoeuvre each other. USN Admiral Pye charges the IJN fleet, but Yamamoto successfully evades him and manages to keep a safe distance. After a few failed attempts to bring his big guns closer to the Japanese carriers, Pye’s ships begin taking damage. Without air support his hands are tied and, after USS Enterprise loses 90% of her aircraft, Pye gives the order to retreat.

enterpriseed6.png

But he makes his decision few hours too late. The US battleship Colorado, being the biggest and easiest target, receives the most enemy bomb hits. With most of the crew, including the captain, dead the ship lags behind the main fleet and, eventually, is destroyed by the third Japanese bomber wave. Another USN battleship falls victim to the Japanese war machine!

1942, March 26th

But the loss of USS Colorado is just the beginning. Although Americans outrun Yamamoto’s fleet, they are still in IJAAF range. The retreating USN fleet is raided every day, even when it reaches Madura Strait and the coasts of Bali.

madurakm4.png

During this retreat, the enemy heavy cruisers suffer the most damage. One of them, USS Louisville, is destroyed during the final sortie. The second encounter between two large USN and IJN fleets ends with a Japanese victory and Admiral Pye returns home two ships short.

1942, April

The war is progressing slowly, but the semi-confident Military decides that holding current possessions is as important as securing new ones. Thus they plan a huge expansion of the Japanese garrison forces both in China and occupied enemy colonies. After all, it is vital to suppress the few remaining Chinese partisan groups in order to ensure a safe supply link to Burma.

garnf0.png

On April 2nd, IJN Kashima is finished in Akita shipyards. It is the newest addition to IJN and first ship of the 5 light cruiser series – the future carrier and battleship escorts.

Nice to see the British AI behaving realistically! That is the first time in a HOI2 game that I have seen the enemy British AI put decent reinforcements into Burma. Usually the Japanese swamp India with ease. Impressive!

How are the Americans faring? Are they doing anything else? Still impressed they are launching interesting attacks.

Remember that this is WiF mod. The AI has been modified, so it is now behaving historically (or at least it tries to ;) ). For example, the Americans first send troops to Britain, amass them there and then they land them in dozens in France.

That's so unlike vanilla Hoi2, where the AI usually send one or two divisions at the time, nothing serious. When I first played the mod as Germany, I was shocked when the US AI landed about 20 divisions in the Netherlands. They almost defeated me! Before I could bring in more reinforcements, they controlled most of Northern Germany and Rhineland. I managed to drive them off, but they dug in in the swampy provinces and kept on sending more divisions. At the end, they had about 120 divisions packed in 3 provinces, it was impossible to finish them and worse, I had to keep them from breaking out with about 80 divisions of my own.

Download and play the mod, if you don't believe me ;)

Great update, Klaipedietis!

Looks like you are stuck in Bruma. Perhaps you could land your troops in India and encircle the British...?

Good job damaging the Americans. Why didn't you pursue their fleet?

BTW, where are you getting the pictures of the ships and their profiles?

I'm impressed! Yeah I'll have to get HOI2 Armaggadeon and download the WiF mod sometime. The only one I did try was TRP which was okay and the U.S did put up a tougher fight for the Philippines but I never experianced the mod as much because I stopped playing. Really need to try out WiF though. The U.S actually LANDING a well placed invasion and nearly defeating the Germans? Ha, that sounds awesome!

Say Kali, any chance you could give us an update of how things are going on in Europe? With Winner telling me about WiF's advantages, it'd be interesting to see if the Allies are making any headway against Nazi Germany.

In the WiF mod I've just ( yesterday to be exact ) seen the AI trigger the Bitter peace. I modded it in because frankly I don't like it that there is no post-Barbarossa Peace event. Meh. So anyway, in the same game the Japanese didn't manage to annex the Phillipines until late 42 because of heavy US resistance, only to loose them again in mid 1944 to a determined Canadian offensive.

Impressive though! In OTL, the Japanese were only able to secure the Philippines in the middle of 1942, a month before Midway. So I'm impressed the Japanese did successfully take the Philippines and the U.S put up a strong fight for them. And a Canadian offensive you say? Just a couple of divisions or a good sized army? I hope the Japanese put up a brutal defence atleast....

I was playing Nationalist China so I lacked the Navy to really have a look, but I once flew some naval Bombers past them and the Canadians had tenish Divisions there, I didn't really count them.
