Troops capturing Provinces on behalf of another nation

Relatively new to HOI4 here.

I am coming to the end of my war. The Western Axis is gone and now is it down to taking Japan out (as UK).

I could see that Iran and Iraq where going to flip to the Axis when USSR attacked them and I positioned my troops accordingly.

However when I started taking provinces I noticed that i was capturing them on behalf of Free France.

Clearly this is annoying as I was keen to take the oil fields. I also noted that some other troops from other countries were capturing provinces for me.

I thought it might be about where you start from ie a UK Province or a French one. Thus I positioned some troops into a UK captured one and pressed the advantage but saw that I was still capturing provices for france.

How does this work?

The position where you start from plays some role but also the war participation of the countries involved. I.e. if France has some decent war participation but comparably little captured land, there's an increased likelihood a new piece of land will go to them.
If a certain state is important to me I will usually ask the other country to pass control to me and maybe trade them some other area via diplomacy.
