Is there something that triggers the appearance of these guys?
For example, "making your first city in Sth America triggers 2 conquistadors" or suchlike.

(I know that settlers have formulae, and I'm comfy with those.)

Hmm... the only way to trigger those is by typing "event [whatever]" in the F12 console... give me a minute and I'll see if I can find which. :)

EDIT: allright, here we are. 58 gives you an explorer, and 59 gives a conquistador. :)

*pout*

Dang, I was hoping that there was a non-cheating trigger.

My annoyance is that they die faster than the arrive.

No, I'm not meaning in battle - none have died there. If we discount those who died when I forgot I'd sent their boat off to explore somewhere (whoops), they're still dying faster than they're arriving.

I seem to get about 6-8 years out of them before the "X has died" message arrives. Is that normal?

I'm glad I'm playing Spain ... if they died this fast always, then it'd be a nightmare trying to explore with someone who gets them even less frequently.

Sounds normal as they have historical death dates unless they are from an event. Spain is lucky and gets an decent amount of explorers and conquistadors.

I am like Morph. I trade maps like crazy or I raid (read: conquer) Lisbon or Madrid for current maps.

Useless explorer...

One of the more extreme cases of Explorers dying waaay too fast.
Magellen - arrived Sept1, 1519. :)
Died April 28, 1521.
Not from war, attrition or anything like that - simply 'died'.
Now, I know that he died early in real life (thanks to getting Navigation in Civ), but this is excessive. He arrives in Andelusia, reaches Table (the edge of my known water at the time, explores one more sea block - and then dies.

Why bother even tormenting me with him?
Thankfully, some of the others have lived for over 10 years, but if there are many more like ol Magellen, I'm trying that event code... :(
