It's time for my new ruler to redeem her "get one empire for free, courtesy of Alexander bloodline invasion CB".

We're near the endgame and I'm the blob. I understand how the CB works: declare invasion on a de iure kingdom, conquer that kingdom capital, occupy every county capital holding belonging to the ruler's empire outside that de iure kingdom, profit!

Does this work to seize tributary states, too? My juiciest target is the western protectorate. I was wondering if I can get those counties too. Would be a waste of time and attrition on the steppes if that's not the case.

As far as I know, it only takes titles held under the defender's realm, so no need to venture out onto the steppes for no gain.

Expanding on OP, tributaries person to person, not title to title. In some circumstances they're inherited, but conquests aren't inheritances. :)

Contrary to the posts above, I think it's possible you will gain all occupied counties from all war participants. So, if you attack a tributary of the WP and occupy some WP counties, I think you might gain those counties in the peace.

Reasoning:
  • This is the way the 867 Sons of Ragnarr invasion works. (I can't recall who's the primary target, but you definitely get counties from secondary participants. But this might be a different CB with substantially different mechanics.)
  • The tribal invasion CB says you gain all occupied titles - it does not say all occupied titles in the primary defender.
From ...\common\cb_types\00_cb_types.txt:
Code:
tribal_invasion = {
...
    on_success = {
...
        hidden_tooltip = {
            ROOT = {
                occupy_minors_of_occupied_settlements = FROM
                gain_all_occupied_titles = { who = FROM type = invasion }
...
            }
        }
    }

But I'm not certain about this, so it might be best if you tested it out with the console before relying on it in your main game.

---

EDIT: On second thoughts, that ROOT scope change might be the part that means you only get holdings from the primary defender. (IE: If ROOT = primary defender then, probably, you can only take the primary defender's land.)

---

EDIT2: On third thoughts, ROOT is clearly the primary attacker, because it is used to grant a nickname. I now suspect FROM might be the primary defender. If this is correct, and if "gain_all_occupied_holdings = FROM" grants all of FROM's holdings that are occupied by ROOT to ROOT, then you will only gain holdings from the primary defender. No stealing stuff from the WP.

Correct, although technically FROMFROM is the attacker, while ROOT is the claimant. In most CBs those two are the same character, however. It's by making non-sensical decisions like this that Paradox stays true to their name.
