Thnis has probably been mulled over endlessly, but I just ecountered this problem: Playing as Portugal I finally reach the Indonesian archipelago, only to find it completely colonized by Malacca and whatnot. According to the ToT I should be able to just enter any province there that doesn't have a fortress) without declaring a war - well I can't.

And on a very related issue - Malacca, Atjeh, and those other countries being able to colonize their immediate surroundings is a major pain in the wazoo. Takes all the fun out of being Portugal if instead of a mercantile empire I have to conquer muslim indonesian provinces, that will just keep revolting endlessly. Any solutions to that problem?

The ToT only applies to Catholic countries.
So it doesn't help you to steal colonies from the Hindus or Muslims.

As for the revolts, you can shift your tolerance slider to reduce the risk of Muslims rebelling, but not much else.

On the other hand there are usually still lots of provinces that no-one has claimed ....

I like sticking to history to a degree, so I won't get a kick out of colonizing Northern America or the Pacific Coast of Asia :). I guess Portugal will be put on the back burner again.

You are going to do what... STOP PLAYING PORTUGAL???

Dude you are going to get a CB shield on the province of Malacca, and you can easily whoop those wussy Muslims around with your superior tech, just assault your way through their lands and avoid the attrition. Eeeeeeasy.

You did take Sansibar, and you did get at least one new CoT for your west African or American trade, did you? There's an event that offers you a CB against Oman. Use it!!!!!! Also use whatever opportunity presents itself against Zanj, don't go for provinces, just go for as much gold and TPs as possible and if you feel like it, vassalize them. (I got 1000d for peace from them!!) You'll notice that all those peaceful nations with 5 traders in a rich CoT can be milked for loads of money. Exploit random CB events against weaklings, but avoid bigger nations, your manpower is pretty low and apart from Conquistadors you have few useful leaders.

You should soon become insanely rich and be able to upgrade your trade tech quickly... that's what I'm doing. Also, take those East Indian muslim colonies before they reach 600pop.

Other things... hmm... Sunda and Bali are easy to convert, it's cheap and while it takes a long time, you can just leave 4k troops and won't have to worry about insurrections. Just send a new missionary ASAP, it might take many years but eventually you will succeed. Oh and you really ought to defeat Atjeh and recuce them to 1 province. Claim all islands with TPs, and steal all other TPs.

Stay in an alliance with Spain and no one will bother you for a long time. If the Spanish don't take the Aztecs out, do so yourself. It's not all that important but it will give you some thing to do with all your money.

The key to Portugal's insane wealth is trade. Trade and little else. Spam the world with your TPs, just keep out of Spain's sphere... but if you can, build a colony with fort in the Caribbean as a base.

Your colonial empire can be developed once you get 30-40d per month at 20% slider position. India is very nice, try to integrate those thousands of natives into your colonies. Like all colonial populations they provide no manpower, but they pay taxes, and base taxe values in India are all high, around 7.

Portugal is FUN!!!

If you incorporate the natives then they are no longer a colony and could contribute manpower. It would require lots of other things to be in place as well. High base manpower, land link to your capital ... :) As portugal though if you had a land link to India you probably do not need the extra manpower. :D

Yes, well, thanks for all the tips - been playing EU (1 and 2) for several years now, so I'm quite bored with 'powergaming', buildiung invincible empires, world control and all that. I never really was into that stuff, I'd rather play something historical, make reasonable plans that I'll be able to 'roleplay' achieving. I also get a little bit upset if some things don't happen in a game (Burgundy and Bysantium don't vanish for example :)) Maybe it's perverted, but that's how I can keep enjoying the game. And that's the only reason why I'm bummed by Malacca and Atjeh having colonized all of the Indian Ocean by the time I got there (ok, Timor and Bali weren't colonized, neither were the Philippines, but the rest was history). I'm not saying Portugal isn;'t fun - it is, much more so than Spain or France for example.

I've also found it quite annoying to try and expand a 10,000 extremely dangerous natives spot into a colony. Especially with Portugal's mediocre land tech.

BiB - Eu2 1.05US + EEP 1.1a

And I know EEP isn't endorsed by Paradox, but some of those events are really cool. I especially appreciated Portugal, Venice and Helvetia getting a bit more of them.

Just change the ai's for those countries so that they don't colonize. As long as you can get there before China (that shouldn't be too much trouble), you're set.

Only Spain and Portugal get CB shields or ToT shields.

Not being Catholic is a huge help for any other coloniser, as Spain and Portugal can't come and take your colonies.

So what happens if Portugal or Spain changes religion, to CRC or something?
Catholic and CRC are considered the same in all things save the effects of the religion upon income, morale, etc. For stability and RMs and tolerance, they are the same.
