What kind of transport navy is the best? I want something that is totally passive and doesn't fight at all - just runs when attacked. I just lost 7 transports in a stupid engagement I didn't even want to be in.
Also use blockade runners as their commanders. Slow the game down and right click an adjacent province to get out of the battle as soon as you can, but you will still be stuck for a while in the naval battle.
Yes, I usually put old useless DDs and CLs as protection (lvl1 and 2). It's better to lose rusty DD than shiny tank division.
In one of my games I caught human sent 20 transport fleet without escorts. 4 I think got away alive.
Just the transports as more ships make it easier to spot. Use blockade runner and set mission to passive. there are zero guarantees that they will never get intercepted but this one has the best odds of not being found and if found escaping with lower losses.
jju, 2 DDs make visibility bigger, but by smaaaaaaal amount, while making their survivability 10x.
Else, unescorted TPs are escorted by random subs and they get heavy damage.
I also use small transport fleets. No more then 3 of them. I just try to limit their size and chance to be spotted.
Traks, while the DD's offer another target to shoot at, that is all they offer. Subs on raiding don't attack transports. So only subs on patrol missions have that chance. But those odds are really small.
Very important: I set the game to pause at the beginning of any naval combat. This gives me a chance to look it over before any damage is done at all, and see if I want to let it go through or if I want to advance it hour by hour and run ASAP. Saves me a lot of ships.
I prefer a few CVL backed up by some DD in vanilla, or a mix of CVL and CVE with the ICE mod.
If you want really stealthy TP fleets, you should go for either a single CVL as escort or 2 DDs.
Just remember: If the enemy has RADAR, he will discover your fleet anyway.
Send a small fast task force ahead of your transports. If they don't clear a path they will at least give you advanced warning of the enemies presence.
