Darn! Had to start over as I deleted the whole translated abstract.

DTF: In medieval times, the "Holy Roman Empire" and the papacy had a grand role in world politics. How will their ability to rule over the ambitions of feudal rulers be implemented? In EU II this moment was somehow left out. In Medieval: Total War the developers took a most primitive path - they made HRE a single state! It is interesting how you're going to solve the problem?

Snowball: Once again you're talking about MTW. We have nothing to do with this game, and its primitivism is better left its creators' responsibility. Our emperor is more like the one we had in EU II and the one that existed in medieval Germany: the first amongst the equals. Though, in CK, emperor's rights will be somewhat limited - he won't always be able to deprive a duke of his title, as well as to collect imperial dues or to summon imperial troops.

Our Pope is, just as all other rulers, a person rather than a fiction. That means, every catholic ruler can force his son or nephew to become a monk, and then send somewhere as a bishop, hoping that the relative will make it to papacy. Because if it happens, the enemies of the dynasty are likely to get excommunicated immediately. By pure coinsidence, of course.

DTF: A similar question about the structure of Kievan Rus and the Caliphate. They were pretty much subdivided too, but had some power over their internal vassals?

Snowball: Kievan Rus is characterized by vast territories, but not so vast means to rule them. If there's a talented and respected ruler out there, everything holds itself together. But if there comes somebody with much more modest skills, all the structure just falls apart. The same is characteristic for caliphates too: a strong ruler - the empire stands firmly on its feet, a mediocre ruler - everything begins to tremble, a weak ruler - everything falls apart.

DTF: A tricky question there. What are your historical views on ancient Rus? :) Some say there was a definite feudalism, others say there never was any, many just can't decide for themselves... What is your opinion, what sources do you draw upon?

Snowball: In our game, the relations in all countries and nations will be defined as feudal. Of course, such an approach leads to unavoidable simplifications. But it is impossible any other way. English, german, scandinavian and french "feudalisms" differed very much from each other. The peasantry was enserfed to different exent everywhere, the feudals had different rights, along with counts and dukes there were viscounts, marquises, mark-counts (or whatever) and many others. In CK, there is one feudalism everywhere.

DTF: A question regarding army composition. Will they be simplified, like in EU, or composed of many different unit types like in Medieval: Total War? Will they get more experienced?

Snowball: Let us leave all analogies with MTW and won't ever try to compare CK to a game, where in 1096 Kiev was ruled by a man of mongol features, clad in mongol armor of XIII century. By the way, in our project all armies will be dressed to the latest military fashion, which means their appearance will change as game progresses.

There are seven unit types in CK, plus siege engines. The regimental composition takes place on provincial basis, depending on the balance between different social groups: the peasants provide mainly militiamen and some archers, the nobles - exclusively knights, mounted and foot (heavy cavalry and heavy infantry), along with squires (light cavalry).

DTF: May one play as a nomad - magyar, mongol, turk and so on?

Snowball: While at the start of the game in 1066 magyar were already christians, they are playable.
ongols appear in the game in the beginning of XIII century. Being a turk is impossible.

DTF: How will the battles be implemented in the game? Will there be sea battles in CK? Can a player's character join the battle in person?

Snowball: Everything is simple concerning battles. You wage war with the army you brought up. The army is commanded by the person appointed commander. We can set battle tactics. As a rule, player's character doesn't show up on the battlefield in person.

Whew... That was the second piece. My new keyboard seems to be working fine. Tomorrow I'll feed you the end...

First off: Walter thanks so much for the translation.

These two quotes jump out at me, mainly the Pope. I hadnt realized that one of your children sent to a monastary could become the Pope in the game. Did I miss this somewhere? Thats huge if you can get your enemies excommunicated or control the papacy !

And secondly for those Mongol strings, well there in the game thankfully so it will be intresting to see excatly how they are implimented.

Yep, Papacy is not playable, but it can be controlled... as stated in FAQ.;)

I knew it could be controlled, I didnt know that a son sent to a monastary could become Pope. Obviously thats how popes start, most of them anyway, but having that as an aspect of the strategy of the game is news to me.

What types of parameters are there for the selection, and what kinds of controls or input do you have as a lord? Is it completely random and by chance your son or relative becomes Pope? if so then what? what are the specifics of the impications of the relationship in the game? bump in prestige? some diplomatic influence?

Just didnt think this aspect of the game out to much I guess, this adds a nice dynamic to this game for sure, I will be very curious to see what if any new info on this comes out in future developer updates.

I suppose if you want your son to be the next Pope, there's always the possibility to, ahem, send gifts to the various cardinals responsible for the election...;)

Maybe you will have to place some members of your dynastie as cardinals first. And I guess that piety and prestige will play an important part in the election.

And now the last part of the thingie coming to you...

DTF: What religions and heresies will there be present in the game? Can one become a heretic king? Can the population of newly acquired provinces be converted to state religion, and if yes, how will it be implemented?

Snowball: In CK there are christianity (catholic and orthodox), islam and paganism. One can become a heretic. All depends on decisions made at certain moments. The conversion of population can perfectly be managed by the church, if you just not hinder it. Still, converting a defeated ruler to your religion is a must.

DTF: What will be affected by the state religion? In EU2 there were some minor bonuses, made more for balancing purpose, than as a meaningful aspect of the game. Do orthodox and catholic christians love each other in CK?

Snowball: The wars aren't possible in the game without an official casus belli. But catholics and orthodox have one, confessional as we call it, always. So you can guess their relations with each other from here.

DTF: And what about economics? How will player's treasury be replenished? Can one change fiscal policies and build additional buildings increasing tax revenues?

Snowball: The treasury is replenished via regular taxation. The rate of it is directly linked to population's loyalty. The actual taxation level is set by you. But you must keep in mind that the higher the taxes are, the lower is loyalty and vice versa. Moreover, there are some special occasions to raise taxes from. For example, the knighting of your son is a perfect occasion to tax your vassals.

DTF: What new diplomatic features when compared to EU II are you most proud of?

Snowball: The diplomatic conception of CK was born after long discussions in our forums and analysis of reports from the Russian League of EU II players. Consequently, a negotiation system was made up, to which, regardless of all our inborn modesty, no match currently exists. For example, the necessity of dividing the military alliances into offensive and defensive was long discussed, but implemented only by us.

DTF: What does a player managing to wrest Jerusalem from muslims get? Are there any bonuses to moslem player conquering Kingdom of Jerusalem? What about orthodoxy?

Snowball: First of all, the player gets additional prestige points, that count towards his dynasty's balance. There are other points, owning which can yield prestige, and losing - cause a prestige loss. They are different for each religion. Only the pagans are indifferent to it all.

DTF: May player's character take part in a battle and be slain?

Snowball: He may. And those rulers, personnaly leading their troops to battle, cause our sincere awe.

DTF: To end with. We don't discuss the arrival dates, we know you won't tell :) Pray tell our readers at least, what stage of development are CK in? When can we expect screenshots?

Snowball: No comments.

DTF: Big thanks for your answers! We wish you sucess in game development, good sales and a plenty of foreign publishers!

Snowball: Thank you. Answering such questions is a pleasure.

And thanks to all who reads and appreciates my translation. I think it is most unfair to deprive people of interesting information just because the don't know a language.

Agreed (as long as beta testing does not take until Q2 of 04 to complete).

It is very interesting that there are so many comparisons to EU2 and not other games.:)

The interviewer tried to draw comparisons to MTW but snowball squashed it rather sternly.

well, MTW's diplomacy game, in fact everything besides the battle's, is not only primitive, i'm not sure it has evolved into more than a one celled organism in the scheme of things :D i imagine CK will blow it out of the water, in all aspects :)

odin, i think your quote does not do justice to this formulation of the problem:

Snowball: Again you about MTW. us nothing connects with this game, and her primitivism let remains on the conscience of creators.
