Self-explanatory as stated in the title, I propose for all Buddhist denominations of Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana to be transferred from their current Eastern group into the Dharmic group. Based on my surface knowledge of the religions, Buddhism should be in the Dharmic group due to being of an Indian origin and having dharma as a core concept just like Hinduism and Sikhism, so based on this it does not really seem to make sense for Buddhism to not be in Dharmic since the group is in-game. The Eastern group can be for the indigenous East Asian faiths (Shinto, Taoism, Confucianism etc.), which while syncretistic with Buddhism, seem to have completely different foundations that is not shared with Buddhism and the Dharmic faiths in general. If I am wrong in this assessment then this suggestion can be ignored, my knowledge regarding Eastern religions is very rudimentary so I'm sorry if I got it wrong.

This, I believe, has to do more with in-game religious tolerance than anything else. Heretics (same religious group) get a base tolerance of -2, while heathens (different religious group) get a base tolerance of -3. Buddhist nations are more likely to spread into China rather than India, and so giving them a -2 base tolerance for Confucian provinces is less punishing than a base -3. Also synergizes well with Mahayana and Theravada getting a +2 tolerance of heretics and Vajrayana getting a +1 tolerance of heretics.

Edit: Also, by EU4's timeframe Buddhism had ceased to have much demographic pull in the Indian subcontinent. It was much more a religion of East and South East Asia, and had a lot of syncretism with the local Chinese religious traditions and Shintoism.

Also, harmonization works in a weird way. The way harmonization works is that only individual religions in the Eastern religion group or entire religious groups can be harmonized. However, moving Buddhist faiths to the Dharmic group removes the harmonization for strictly Mahayana and it will automatically harmonize Hinduism and Sikhism too.

Could a potential solution to this be that Confucianism could harmonize individual faiths in the Dharmic group just like with the Eastern group? I think it would be a very minor change since there are only 2 faith currently in the group, Hinduism and Sikhism. Pretty much one would get the current dharmic harmonization bonus with one more added for the other religion. In the end all harmonization bonuses for Buddhist faith would be retained and available.

As we have been talking about, buddhism is closely linked to east asian cultures and religions,

it's current position is not because of mechanics but are accurate

If Buddhism were to be moved, then Shinto and Confucian would need to be moved as well as in-game they are also used to convey Japanese Buddhism and covers the parts of China that were very much predominantly Buddhist.
