Recently I started a new game and used the ruler designer to make my own custom character only to come across something I found a bit odd. I realized that almost right at the start an event fires removing one of my traits randomly. I looked around the internet and found a post saying that any given character can have a maximum of five personality traits before the event fires to remove one of them. Is this true? Are there any other limitations I should know about concerning character design?

It's definitely true. Not sure what else might be relevant to you.

So five is the magic number for personality traits then, that's good to know. The other factors I spoke of were health and fertility and if there was something similar in place to limit that.

I see...at least now am aware of what is going on. Since they don't warn you about it in the ruler designer I assumed anything was fair game. Thank you for the quick reply.
To be fair it's more like a mean number of traits than a hard limit. I've had rulers who've been over five traits for years. If you start with 10 traits it will take quite a while for you to actually lose five of them.

I'm pretty sure that the trait loss mechanic is an "on_action" event, ie it is triggered to go off every fixed period. Go look in the on_actions file to find the relevant event, then edit that to your heart's content to either slow down or eliminate the trait loss mechanic altogether.

Not as easy as that unfortunately. There's just a list of 30+ 'trait events'. You'd need to go through them to find which one to edit.

Those lines don't affect the 5 personality trait limit. The first one will change how many traits randomly generated historical characters get and the second one is how many leadership traits (Cavalry Leader, Direct Leader, Winter Soldier, etc.) a character can have.

The 5 trait limit is not a limit per se, but rather a condition in events that randomly grant or remove traits. If a character has less than 5 personality traits they can trigger events that have a chance to give them a new trait. If they have more than 5 traits they can trigger events that remove a trait.

And Rags17 is right. These events are triggered by an on_action five year pulse. You essentially have two options. You can either edit the events themselves to trigger at a higher trait count or you can edit them out of the on_actions file, but you'll still need to know their event IDs to do so.

Yes it's true, but it's not instant or automatic. That's an event (or rather a suite of events, one per trait) that triggers on the five year pulse, and there are a lot of other events on that pulse that it has to compete with.
