I understand how posts of steam can get lost, so I'm posting here original post was on steam but i want to post here from now on.
Most the replys on my post are totally irrelivent as it's user error that trains are getting backed up my issue is seporate from 95% of the replys, the trains are outside city map zone and while exiting the map, outside my city limits the trains are backed up and not disappearing from the map, no congestion in the city.on map "two Rivers"

If you enable a camera mod that lets you move out of the map limits and follow the rail along you'll find at the very edge there seems to be what is an invisible station with passengers and all. Watching in a city i've had this problem with, the cargo trains seem to work fine but passenger trains seem to pull in, the passengers leave and then the train just sits there. I wonder if the passengers at this invisible station are trying to onboard but failing somehow causing the train to wait indefinetly for them.

This doesn't happen with the vanilla train, so disable all trains from the workshop and your problem is solved. Still this thread is older than patch 1.1.0, so older than custom trains. So again: There are currently two bugs.
This thread was originally about the bug with high train traffic, then mixed up with not despawning custom trains as both have the same symptoms: Train jams.

No modded trains here. Only happens at map edge.

So far on my big city, there is not the issue. I now have a passenger line in operation and a single cargo train terminal; all stations have bypasses (and the cargo terminal has the longest of all). I have not had any backup issues.

I do notice that with my single line (visiting the five passenger stations), there is occasionally a wait when the train approaches the station. It looks like the trains choose a platform and will wait for that platform instead of reserving a free platform and pathing to that. Given this, I almost think the answer is some combination of allowing for upgrades of rail stations (more tracks/platforms) and "lock on to free platform" rather than "select platform to start and then stop at it."

I won't play the game until this problem is fixed, as it destroys an - apart from this - great gaming experience. So thank you for finally looking after it.

As I mentioned before, the train jam problem is closely related to a "lack of imports problem", which even stays after all jams a gone. One time it even occured without train jams, but I assume it was after I relocated a cargo train station. Can't prove that though.

Edit: CO, as soon as I'll be finally able to play the game without game breaking bugs, I will build you a shrine. ;)

Hello, it is August now and the map I play on, Two Rivers, still has this issue. I have spent the last 2 hours of my life rebuilding my trains network from scratch because I thought there was something wrong with it, then I noticed that the problem lies outside the map.

I play the unmodded game, and I just bought it a few days ago (or was it a week...? I forgot how the sun feels) on Steam so it's patched up. My town is pretty neat and is at 70k people now.

I just want to say, that I have the cargo train network completely separate from the passenger train network. In fact, the passenger train network isn't even connected to any outside line (so, it has no problems).

Please help, my industry is dying :)

@Raz415 I've had a quick look. Your immediate problem is that the railway junction just outside your current city boundary is clogged up, it cannot cope with the volume of trains you have travelling through it. You can claim that tile and rework the junction.

Just a couple of observations about your city though. Your layout is generating a lot of freight traffic which is not a bad thing as long as the infrastructure can cope, with this map it cant, without reworking that junction.

The alternative is to reduce freight traffic on the railways. This could be done by reducing the number of stations, you could also reduce the budget. You could also layout more generic industry to produce the goods your city needs instead of importing it.

Its all great fun isn't it ;)

Hello, thanks a lot for your reply. I have actually managed to fix the problem :) After clicking on some trains I have noticed that most of my freight trains were loaded 7-20%, so it was a lot of traffic for no reason. I tried reducing the budget but then the industry was running out of raw goods.

I have reworked the system almost completely. I have completely separated my internal rails from the outside world, and instead decided to connect the outside rails to 2 stations on the outskirts of the city, which deliver goods by truck to one cargo train terminal, which is connected to my railway network. This was surprisingly efficient. Now, the trains that leave that one station are almost aways 20-100% loaded, which puts much less pressure on the network.

I have also disconnected Train Stations from the outside world completely, tourists can come by car or plane :p I might try to connect them to the outside later, for now I'm just happy that it all works out :D

As for your suggestion, you are right. Unfortunately I have already bought the maximum number of tiles. But I will definitely be more careful about things outside my city on the next map I play! :)

Glad you managed to sort it. Whoever at CO designed that railway junction on the 2 rivers map is definitely not a train person

This bug is so annoying. There is a train traffic jam coming into and leaving the city. Traffic jams with red commuter trains with zero passengers clogging up the rails. I have doubled up the rails, adding "express lanes," I have added elevated lines, put the rails through tunnels, and I still get commuter trains (not the routes I have set up) coming into the city with zero passengers.

I have even set the budget for trains to the lowest level hoping to reduce the number of trains on the rails. This seems to INCREASE the number of trains with minimal loads. Would love a mod to fix this or for the devs to address!

Don't get me started on the weird behaviors of trucks using just one lane of a six-lane road. I shake my head and hope for a fix.

I solved this problem. Like in every city, capacity of railroads are limited. I was constructed too many Cargo terminal and there were too much trains going outside. I deleted few Cargo terminals and now the traffic is running well with 5 terminals. Also I cutted the rail tracks and one terminal leads only to one exit. It could be still a good idea to add some function for getting more capacity for trains. It could be something that you need to pay (virtual money of course). For instance 1 000 000 currency units.

This bug is really sad and has stopped me from playing CS at all. I know i can fix it by creating transfer stations at the edge of the map. But having it to do for every map seems a bit odd. Also it doesn't matter if you have 5 of 50 cargo stations. As soon as you create a passenger station this bug will appear. Maybe if CO will fix this bug i'll start playing again, but for now i'll just put CS on the shelf. Heck, i even created some mods some people like, but running into this bug on each and every map is ridiculous. Too bad, since CS seemed really fun at first.

If I may ask, what are your stations like? I was able to get rid of the issue by having bypass sidings for my passenger rail stations, and one long bypass siding for my (single) freight rail station for a city of 147,000.

Do you have any screenshots of your rail network?

I had same issue on my city, but dividing lines between local passengers rail line, local cargo rail line, and international cargo/passenger line, the problem disappears. Seams that having all lines connected cause to have many trains sent outside also with low goods, dividing line make mandatory to optimize it.
I use to have more point with one local and one international cargo train station closest each other, so industry send goods to international station via local rail lines.

I don't have screenshots, but i mostly play on gridlike maps (like this one which i made myself) and i like to play it with big populations, like 400-500k+

I do also not have the problem when i separate passenger and cargo lines, it only seems to appear when both are combined. I still believe the problem is passenger train related and not cargo related. I can play fine without passenger stations.

Also there seems to be a problem when loading maps (maybe after not playing them for a few weeks). Whenever i load a map, there seems to be a enormous amount of incoming train traffic. Like 40-50 trains coming in when loading a map. This goes away after playing for 10-30 minutes. But it just makes no sense. Like, if they are queued up before saving or so.

Additionally, i have created a few maps with transfer-stations at the map borders. This apparently seems to run smooth, until i connect my regular outside connections again. After a few minutes all trains are using the outside connections but not the transfer stations. This is good (as expected), but the transfer stations just seems to have a GIANT backlog and still sending out trains after an hour (maybe more) of not seeing incoming trains.

Maybe i'm just testing extreme situations, but i just hope, in a future release, handling of trains will be finetuned.

edit: fix url

As I've now started having "Not enough goods to sell" abandonments in my city, I've tried adding cargo terminals. I now have two cargo terminals and a ship port, which I would think would be enough. So we'll see what happens when I run the city for a few days to get it to recalculate.

Something weird happened though; this came about and the trains started to not be 100% full. The second terminal was getting new freight train deliveries that were only 13% full. AND on top of that, the ships seem to not bring as much cargo now. So I think maybe something was changed that is reducing train and other cargo spawns. Not sure what I'm screwing up though.

This screenshot shows my only harbor.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=500731601

So we'll see if the system can recalculate. If it doesn't work I'll try adding a third rail station on another spur line, and connect that to the airport.

Will this ever get fixed? It's so annoying, that I almost completely stopped playing. The most annoying part is, that almost all trains are empty or almost empty. Why spawn those stupid trains at all. I have 1 (!!) passenger station connected to outside and it spawns a new empty or almost empty train as soon as one leaves the station. It's vexing to just look at it.

Please have a heart CO and fix this.

I had the same problem but the following solution worked:
- split passenger traffic from cargo traffic in the entire city/map (important)
- make a transfer zone for cargo traffic at the border of the map (see picture)
- make by-pass for passenger traffic and connnect to the passenger part of the railroad system

-> no more congestion!
-> smooth railway traffic at map borders!
