I understand how posts of steam can get lost, so I'm posting here original post was on steam but i want to post here from now on.
Most the replys on my post are totally irrelivent as it's user error that trains are getting backed up my issue is seporate from 95% of the replys, the trains are outside city map zone and while exiting the map, outside my city limits the trains are backed up and not disappearing from the map, no congestion in the city.on map "two Rivers"

There is this 100k city, where I had the train jam problem. After disconnecting the tracks at the border I waited untill the jam disappeared. Problem solved, didn't come back, but...

..the game somehow didn't recover from the missing supplies and I got "Not enough goods to sell" all over the city. There was absolutly no chance to fix it. Trains and ships arrive with <20% load, no traffic jams at all...
So I tried something new and erased every single commercial area in the city. You would expect the little blue 'commercial demand' bar to rise, but nope, stayed where it was at zero. Seems like my city didn't need commercial buildings no more. o_O

Seen this as well, could never recover.

ok same here, problem occurs at every map so not a map issue.
problem start when your city grows and your import/export grows to the extend that you'll need cargo trains
however! some are loaded with 7%, others 60% but i have never seen fully loaded cargo.
i use 8 cargo terminals and 2 harbors for cargo.
4 are in one industrial area, 1 for each harbor and 2 in another industrial area.
industrial areas are on either side of the map.
trains on the left map exit are fine, trains on the right map exit are jampacked and they even are well over the map border.
i now have 3 exits in my map and the problem consists only at one map exit.
however, because of this the rest of the map comes to a halt aswell. cargo trains a pilled up and if you wait long enough you get your RAW materials problem
trains cant deliver their goods at the terminals, terminals cant send out trucks to shops
shops complain and go out of business.
perfect for completing the 1000 abandoned buildings but not so good in playing the game

anyways. cant really tell why this problem happens but when it starts it wont stop

cheers mav

Same here, neighbour city can't handle the high train traffic of my city anymore. Industries in my city are already starting to decrease cause of that.
A mod like first-person camera reveals that all the traffic gets to one station outside of my city. That's simply not enough to handle it.

//EDIT: This could be easily solvable by a mod...

//EDIT²: This is the small station handling both, cargo and passenger traffic at the end of the track:

I am also having this problem. My trains are backing up along two separate map exits now, and I am constantly having the reset the tracks by deleting the exits. This really needs to be a patching priority. And word on when this will be fixed?

The same problem... especially offensively that my city population is only 16K and I have only 2 cargo stations and 3 passanger. But it's happened. Is any solution appear?

I found that the TGV asset causes a passenger train to get stuck at the border station and doesnt allow all the other trains through, if you have that installed could be your cause. Having said that other people have experienced the problem without the asset. Worth a try though if you have it though

And you'll find that these trains are mostly empty. I feel like if the cargo were consolidated more at the stations it would likely prevent this issue.

My feeling is that two things need to happen:
1. Clarification of train dispatching: Is a new train generated every x amount of time, no matter the amount of cargo? Or are they dispatched when some threshold is met?
2. Ways to change the size of station, ala Transport Tycoon and other games: It's shown that trains can actually travel bidirectionally on the railroad lines, and there are crossovers that exist at the entrances to stations. And this is certainly not going to be a small sort of project, but perhaps there's a way to customize rail layouts where there could actually be yards and the like at station approaches.

I did get a small bit of relief at first from making bypass lines, but it's not enough.

Hello, I'm also running into this issue on every map i have. It's probably the most frustrating bug currently. I've been doing some testing to see if i could figure out why this would happen and how to clear it. It doesn't really matter how many cargo stations i create. I have two maps for testing, one with about 35 cargo stations (400k pop) and one with about 5 or 6 (35k pop). Both games run really fine. However, as soon as i create one single passenger train line, the jams start. Disabling the single passenger station and the train jam clears up almost instantly. Reenable the passenger train station again, wait 15 minutes, and the train jam is there again. This is really consistent.

Please CO, this is the best game (and most addictive) i've played in years! Please give some priority to this bug :)

No game changing mods installed here.. quoting myself because I already wrote this message before;

Is there a bug report of this somewhere on the forums? We'd like to get more information about this if possible!

Heyyo. Here's a video about the railway problem

Some timestamps:

0:20 Trains are queueing to exit the map from one of the exits in the Lakevalley Map

Clicking on the Freight trains you can see they are entering with only 10 - 15% load each alot of the time.

You can see that Passenger trains are leaving the map with only 2 passengers

1:00 I cam over to another exit where trains are queuing to leave the map
The passenger trains you can see are entering the map in huge volumes - maybe a train every 8 seconds or so, and each one has only roughly about 5-10 passengers onboard each

1:40 an exit of my map that doesn't seem to be having this problem?

2:10 another exit of my map that doesn't have this problem. It's odd that it only seems to occur on certain exits?

Hi, thanks for all the information about the trains! This issue is being investigated.

Have you noticed any difference if you have rails with only passenger train stations and another rails for cargo compared to having both stations alongside the same network?

@co_martsu There are currently two bugs:
1. The outer city train station(s) can't handle the train traffic of larger cities. This is to some extend controllable by network design.
2. Some trains like the TGV Train or the ÖBB 4024 don't despawn at the outer city station(s). This can't be controlled from within the city.

I have noticed with regard to #1 that @V10lator mentioned that it happens far less often if there are dedicated regional networks that are on separate track networks, for both passenger, and cargo. To the extent possible neither share a line as far as possible to the edge of the map and the local city network is kept totally separate as well and handles internal distribution. But depending on the level of train demand\generation it still can happen where trains are still generated at too high a rate vs. their despawn rate, and typically are not leaving or arriving remotely 'full'. ie the 7% ghost trains thing. But overall while this common workaround does greatly help combat the problem by distributing the load and avoiding most traffic delays, the less outside connections that are in the map the less it's possible to use this workaround, and even if you have things split up nice with 4 external dedicated cargo and 4 external dedicated passenger lines (or some other combo that fits your needs best), if you start adding additional busy regional stations to those lines you'll eventually see some backup, probably quicker if in particular cases where you might have thru-traffic, or are super heavy on exports

2015-05-29_00001_mco.jpg
^^ example type of work around that tends to avoid the problem...but only so much, and only if the map and city dynamics permit.

Only a slight difference, sadly. I'm not able to get the screenshots right now as I'm not on a computer that can handle the city I have as an example here.

I did notice that if I killed the passenger train line, I did get lower congestion.

Right now the approaches to my cargo stations are absolutely full of trains.

Now it so happens that I have multiple train stations. Would this potentially cause the issue? (That is, I have multiple cargo stations as well as multiple harbors).

Argh, I had this issue on my previous city and now I have it again! I thought that separating lines would have helped but no matter what I've tried there's no way to clear those jams. Obviously my city is dying now... Hopefully there will be a quick fix!

I have no cargo station on my rails in a new city I'm playing and I haven't had a single problem. I also just have no commuter or regional train service. So we'll see what happens. Once I get enough money I'm going to try another cargo terminal since I managed to keep my industrial setup to only one area.

But yeah, no problem on this new city, whatsoever!

Ha ha of course you don't, as you said you don't have any regional connections....yet :)

Yeah the separation will usually help (usually a lot) but only up to a point given a particular design\layout or map.

Ooops, I mistyped. I do have the one passenger station with a bypass, and the trains just come by every once in a while. (Not totally full either).

I'm going to try to set up the commuter rail system soon.
