I know there was a thread about pathfinding and that CO said that it wasn't going to be changed. Does that apply to just pedestrians or car traffic as well, as the current traffic system does not work efficiently. I'm playing in Central City at the minute, and hundreds of cars are being held up by very stupid lane changes made by some cars that want to turn left at a junction at the other side of the bridge. The traffic is being held up all the way down the expressway and in many of the nearby smaller roads, leading to problems with four of my bus lines. One of the lines got so stuck up in the traffic that I had to delete it, as there was no way to fix it without completely re-routing it. The traffic problems can be very infuriating and stressful, especially when one of your lines gets involved, which, most of the time, it does. Can someone from CO please say about any possible changes to the traffic system, and if all the pathfinding is remaining unchanged, or if it is just pedestrian traffic? Thanks!

I totally agree that something needs to be done with the pathfinding system for cars. One thing is what TDTV says about cars blocking the whole highway because they want to change lanes in strange places and really insist. Another thing is that they always take to shortest route, not the fastest. Cars prefer to line up in long lines through narrow small streets instead of taking the wider 4-5-6 lanes street just because the smaller streets are shorter in distance, but definitely not in time.

Well, maybe it is a bit tricky to program this kind of AI, so what if I, as the player, could "set up signs" along a path cars should follow if they want to go to certain parts of the city, like they do in the real world?

Another strange thing is that cars prefer to exit the highways just to enter them again, even when this exit/enter route is longer.

You can counter this by building the on- and off-ramps with one-way-roads instead of highways. Cars prefer the highway over one-way-roads and 99% of the vehicles should stay on the highway then.

Other problem ist, that everyone wants on the highway, even when other routes are shorter. But this is an other problem of course.

Well, I wont call that a problem, but rather a good thing, because then they wont block the small shorter roads.

I did try this on the affected highway and it did work for a while, begore all the traffic that actually wanted to leave the highway for good got mixed up with the traffic getting stuck due to the avenue - expressway transition, creating one massive traffic jam.

The problem is the rigidity of the game. Even if a car is 99% is over into the next lane but is stopped because of traffic it blocks the cars from continuing, even though in real life there is more than enough space for the traffic to continue past the car.

While frustrating, People getting over at odd times is a real life problem in traffic. As well as, people using side streets to get around traffic. Of course, the problem is they are using side streets regardless of traffic conditions or time of day.
