Why does all the traffic use the red line instead of the black line? Its causing unnecessary jams.

that is an interesting intersection you have there. Its probably fairly difficult to program an all encompassing traffic AI that will smoothly handle an intersection like that. I mean that thing almost looks like a destruction derby track lol. I was gonna say remove the cross section but it is a crucial part of your offramp system, so I have no idea what to suggest.

Its kind of a common one in England. But I've noticed the traffic prefer to take the outside route instead of the direct route. I even tried making the top crossover curved to make the journey longer so they would prefer to take the direct route but that makes things worse.

Well then that shoots down my theory of a university or some other building that is drawing cars to then it fills up and they want to go back on the highway again.
Hmmmm..........

I've found that if theres a left (or right) arrow + straight ahead arrow for a highway lane, nobody will ever use that lane for going straight ahead, . The left lane will only have a left arrow, so nobody will definitely use that lane for going straight ahead. So those two lanes cannot be used for going straight ahead. That leaves the rightmost lane available, but not sure why not more vehicles use it. Maybe they're planning to turn left soonish. In any case, this intersection should be bulldozed ASAP and replaced with an intersection that works. Only use ramps for exiting the highway. This intersection looks very dangerous to me with 100kmh limit traffic broadsiding each other.

Try to force them with speed limitations by using slower roads to build the outside parts. Right now all those parts are highways.

I would suggest eliminating the straight sections and replacing them with a roundabout. There is a mod on the steam workshop that is very similar to your intersection but has a roundabout above the highway. I use it regularly and it works terrifically.

Really? I've never seen a highway where 60+mph traffic was just crossing like that in my entire life, really didn't think something like that was even feasible in real life. It would make more sense if the off ramps were one way avenues with stop lights at least.

A guy on steam had even more ridiculous example of such behaviour where the traffic would choose to go through city instead of perfectly straight highway.
You can find it here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/255710/discussions/0/611702631219047763/?tscn=1428222665
He even provided a savegame so you can check it for yourself. IMO this should definitely be brought to the attention of the devs as this is surely a bug and it can easily be lost in the sea of rants from people who refuse to learn how to do traffic properly.

I downloaded the save file and so far haven't seen any traffic doing what he claims it's doing. I'll keep watching.

Edit: Been watching for several minutes now and whilst I have seen some instances of questionable pathfinding (it's true that almost everything is exiting the highway there when there are better exits they could choose) I haven't verified a single car taking the path that is claimed in the complaint, leaving the highway then rejoining further down.

Double edit: Nevermind, found one. It's the through-traffic. Let me try something...

Fair enough, that's kind of weird (although it's a tiny minimal amount of his traffic and certainly isn't causing his traffic issues, that I'd attribute to the other aforementioned bad pathfinding).
