I've figured out that trading commanders gain experience based on profit/income generated. What I cannot figure out is when/how much is required for each level. What I have found is that once I train a commander to have the +speed, +cargo, +sell price, -buy price skills, they level up much faster than a brand new commander trading the same goods and with identical fleets. Any ideas or thoughts?

Edit: Also not sure if automatic trading helps or hurts experience, other than ships taking longer in ports.

I know what you mean. Though in my experience it seems volume has a major impact. So commanding more ships helps speed things along. I tend to choose a captain with either +sell price or -buy price as a base skill, then hire a navigator to speed them along. A faster method is to make them captain of war fleet. They level quite a bit faster and when they do give them grocery captain skills.

Yeah, that trick with making them a war fleet captain helps quite a bit, especially early when you don't have huge capacity ships and it only takes a few battles for a commander to go from lvl0 to lvl 3. still trying to figure out some exact numbers for this though just for my own interest
