I don't know if its been mentioned before...

Isn't it unreallistic having sailing ships zig-zagging all over the oceans as if they were steam powered?

It may be difficult to code but it would be much more realistic having a wind overlay for the map and different journey times going one way than the other. I dont mean simulate a whole weather system, just add the basic trade winds, they can remain the same direction and strength if necessary.

You could add movement modifiers to each province's data eg. going to the next province to the east carries a modifier of 1.5 and going to the province to the west carriers a modifyer of 0.5, north and south could be 1 etc...

I always thought that would be cool. Anything to model the elements and make the oceans a bit more characterful is welcome. Except in HoI Paradox games have tended to short-shrift the weather.

Lets NOT have HoI2-style weather please. It is far to much micromanagement to adjust every troop movement for the weather conditions.

I'd love to have HOI2 weather just as long as there's an option to see weather and terrain on the same map. BTW was it just me or is it nearly impossible to work out what the terrain is on any map in CK.

AGCEEP added oceac streams, but wind would not be logical. While low level sail ships needed good direction wind, serious class sail ships could sail even agaist wind (zig-zag). Only what they truly needed was that there is any kind wind.

So what happens when they get into the doldrums?

I agree with what you say but it would take eg. twice as long sailing into the wind as with it so what I said about movement modifiers one way and the other holds.

Tacking takes much, much, longer that just sailing with the wind. And like Sonny said, there's the doldrums to cross, that should take a lot of time no matter what kind of ship you have.

I think the new 3D map for EU3 will make it much easier to determine the terrain type :)

I prefer 2D maps. Nice and simple........like me.

I think the point about 3-D maps is that they're easier to mod.

Actually "prevailing winds" would be better than "trade winds" here, as it's a worldwide problem. Ideally, direction & strength vary seasonally, & sometimes randomly. The benefits would be great. It would automatically define limits to trade routes, without artificial restraints, as you could go a different way a cost in $. It would make certain positions have real strategic importance, & others less. (Can anyone say that, in EU2, the importance the RN placed on St Lucia is present?) And, combined with variable weather, it would give occasional opportunities to the weaker navy to sortie.

The AGCEEP currents were a nice try, within the limits of what EU2 would allow, but those limits were just too constrictive, e.g., the fact that they were bi-directional.
