I was playing as US in GC, started trading techs to Mexico for money. It worked for a LONG time, and I was pumped. I was very friendly with Mexico, no war, told Texas I wanted no part of them, etc. I had money to burn, but my prestige was tanking!

Finally I made a trade and watched the prestige at the same time, as I suspected something was afoot. Yes - a loss of 10 for every trade I made. Gee, I guess it was a little too simple...

Soooo - my question is, what other traps have been laid for people like me who will try to exploit the game?

Also, is there any way to trade for goods that you want on the market? Or do you just have to set your slider as high as you're willing to go and let the stuff come in at an astronomical price?

I'm loving this game, btw...

Related issue here - if you have negative prestige you can not initiate any diplomatic actions, so don't let your prestige go negative.

There is no direct way to 'buy' goods. This can only be done by setting the wanted stock level. If you set this level very high, and if it takes a long time for the stock to build up, then - as you said - you are pushing the price up high, which might harm your budget. You could set the levels for buying only a few pieces (if these become available to your country - don't forget that this depends on your prestige rank!), so that the price can recover once you bought these surplus pieces, then ordering some more and so on... (If you 'order' few units, the price will also increase a bit. Don't bother with too much micromanagement here, as you cannot completely avoid this - it's not worth it as there are better ways for a healthy budget).

For resources you don't want to build stocks for (i.e. other than canned food and the like) it is usually sufficient to buy 1-2 units above your consume level (see mouse-over info for each resource).
