Besides having high trade tech:

- don't send a lot of traders into CoT's controlled by Spain or Mughals. They tend to ban you. Keep 3-5 traders there otherwise you'll run at a high risk, especially when they don't like you.

- early in the game it's very easy to successfully send your traders since noone else is around.

- don't trade maps or loose naval battles later in the games when you have a hidden profitable CoT in ROTW.

- sum the # of traders in a CoT. Your chances not to compete someone out is higher if the sum is below 20 :D

- competition means lower relations. Lower relations means the risk of being banned.

Otherwise you'll have to precise your question.

i disagree... i always send a few traders to the CoT of a nation im at war with... with a little bit of luck, youll kick out a few of their own traders, which gives them less money to fight the war with. of course you can only do this if you have a bit of spare cash and merchants yourself.

Yep I agree. In order of importance
1) Get high trade tech
2) Don't send to COTs that already have 20 merchants in them
3) Monopolize your own COTs - try to drive out every other merchant so you get it all yourself. You should see 100% on the trade ledger.
4) Unless you have lots of money and patience don't monopolize anyone else's COT. Get to 5 and leave them, they'll never be kicked out. The monopoly will usually last about 3 months and get you banned.
5) Send 2 or 3 merchants at a time - if you kick someone out you'll have a better chance of getting in
6) Don't send 4 mrchants at a time unless you don't mind being banned.

I actually like Genoa. Pretty rich and you don't get kicked out too often. Keep fewer merchants than the locals and they won't ban you. Venice is too cutthroat by far. Stay out until you have the tech to be able to fight and win.

I like putting 3-5 merchants in every European CoT... even smaller ones are worth it, as it only costs you a little to put em in place, and they arent kicked out often... The profits are smaller, but you have more chance of maintaining your level of merchants there compared to the big ones like Venice...
