First, I love EU: Rome and think it's a great game. But I have a thought regarding the pre-invasion relations between Rome and the Gauls. Also, why is there no slave trade?
The celts of barbarian Europe at the period (or the people of the La Tène culture) had a lot of contacts with the Mediterranean cultures. Their economy was based on agriculture (quite logical) and metalworking (!) and this combination caused the emergence of large concentrated settlements which Caesar called oppida. These oppida became the administrative, economic and (very importantly) trade centres as the local celtic (ie gallic) elite were in need for Mediterranean products. They needed constant flow of luxury and prestige items in order to retain and renew the social hierarchy. When that flow was disturbed, problems arose (compare the collapse of the Hallstatt culture when the flow of luxury items declined). Thus the trade links with Mediterranean cultures (Greeks of Massalia, Etruscans and a bit later, Rome) were of vital importance to these leaders. But it was mutual - the more civilized South needed metal and slaves, which these gallic people provided. After a while, these trade links became so common, the gallic elite became even more powerful among their tribes and their oppida became rich and huge. And that's also on of the reasons why it was so easy (well, compared to more barbaric germans) for Caesar to conquer those lands - the similarity of economic system and power centres were understood by the Romans. Noricum kingdom for example, was so dependant on the Roman trade that the coup of 16 BC was a piece of cake for Romans.
So what I'm trying to tell is that perhaps it should be programmed into game that celtic tribes want and need to be in close contact with Romans (oh, and of course with Massalia and Etruscans), maybe with some mission events? Secondly, the slave trading was very very important part of these contacts. One of the main reasons (apart from the fear of barbarian attacks) Caesar invaded Gallia, was to get even more slaves for the extensive economy of Rome. Why isn't the slave trading implemented in the game or are there some moral barriers involved? There seems no problem with getting slaves from fighting barbarians...
PS. Is there any way to revoke "smaller" titles? That has bothered me for some time.
