Yep, it's one of the great mysteries of the EU4 map. Probably the intention is to make the node more 'competitive', and not give Europeans too much of an advantage there.

Another thing to consider is that it's a transcontinental node (part African, part Asian), whereas most of the trade company nodes are entirely African or entirely Asian (with the exception of Moluccas, which extends a little bit into Oceania). Given the continental restrictions on trade companies, it could get a bit confusing that e.g. an Asian country can create a trade company there, but only on the African side, and maybe that's not enough for a bonus merchant. (I think the continental restrictions on TCs are silly, but it's possibly a reason from the devs' perspective.)

It's not as annoying as it was in earlier versions, because now it's an excellent location for a March with Divert Trade active: good defensive chokepoint in Yemen, some local tags with good NIs (e.g. Rassids and Somalis look good for a March), and so on.

I was trying to find the basis for this restriction in the game files and I couldn't do it. How do TCs have definite continents when several already span continents? Malacca, Moluccas, and Philippines have some African, Oceanian, and Oceanian provinces respectively. Maybe it's based on the first province defined?

Maybe you can create trade company in those African or Oceanian provinces if you have an Asian capital?

I think it's by province, so yes, you would be able to create TCs in the off-continent provinces. It's not that there's a defined continent for TCs, just that players who don't know about moving capitals etc might find it confusing on the Africa/Asia border.

You're right that Philippines spills out into Oceania; I forgot about that one. Malacca has one 'African' province in the middle of the Indian Ocean; it looks like a mistake to me (that island should really count as Asian).

The reliance on Aden to get Indian trade to Western Europe should be ended by reversing trade between Ceylon and Indus so that it goes Indus > Goa > Ceylon. Add Doab to Indus so that the latter does not become a starting node.

Then add a connection from Ceylon directly to Cape of Good Hope or Zanzibar. Keep the connections to Aden for nations like Oman, Ottomans, or Mamluks to use. But add this option for Europeans who expand into the Indian Ocean.

Gulf of Aden is a problematic node. And it's because you can't create trade companies. Unless you create states there even controlling all the Cot's to steer about 80-90% trade value to Zanzibar you need about 200 caravels (playing as GB for example). Because mid to late game the trade value of Gulf of Aden can be about 100d/150d depending on the effort you made to steer the rich indian nodes.

I usually conquer the Cot's, and I forget about everything else. Mid to late game I have about 300-400 light ships only in Aden because no other nations will profit from all those hard-earned riches from India. Chinese trade & indonesian can be redirected to Zanzibar but not the indian ones.

A better option that a march with divert trade should be a small scutaged vassal with the Cot's and the provinces that belong to the Cot's state. Because you can declare war against anyone without your vassal being involved. Oman can be a good candidate.
