How would you go about weighing the arguments in favor or against? What makes a city a "whore of Babylon"?
The bible gives multiple identifying characteristics for the whore of babylon read revelation 17 and 18
How would you go about weighing the arguments in favor or against? What makes a city a "whore of Babylon"?
17:1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
17:2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. ["Fornication" is interpreted/translated as "idolatry" in the Amplified Bible (AMP), the New American Bible mentions "harlotry"]
17:3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
17:4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. [King James Version; the New International Version uses "prostitutes" instead of "harlots"].
17:6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. [King James Version; the New International Version Bible and the New American Bible use "hills" instead of "mountains"].
17:10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he comes, he must continue a short space.
17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goes into perdition.
17:12 And the ten horns which thou saw are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
17:15 And he said unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
17:18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigns over the kings of the earth.
17:9 (seven hills of Rome) and 17.18 could be references to Rome but I don't see what part is tied to the topic of this thread.
How much of the listed goods were going to romeWell base on the listed goods and if by "merchants of the Earth" it means merchants of the Empire, Rome was probably the best fit at the time of writing. By the time Rome was sacked it had been surpassed in importance though.
It does???Alot of people think that the whore of babylon is the Vatican and along with the fact that at least several of the things listed can be found there (purple and scarlet robes, myrrh and frankincense possibly ivory) worries me greatly
It does???
Yes I am trying to find out if the whore of babylon is the Vatican or ancient pagan rome
But what if the vatican becomes what rome was, what then? But the "merchants of the world" sell very little to the vatican and wouldn't weep if it were to fall as it says in 18. At the time the passage was written Rome fit the description pretty well but since then Rome has fallen (but been rebuilt in contradiction to 18:21). The modern Vatican (or even all of Rome) does not fit the description in 17 or 18.
But what if the vatican becomes what rome was, what then?
You mean if the Vatican annexes all of Rome (to get the seven hills) and becomes the greatest market place on earth (including slavery)? That should take quite some time and give plenty of warning.
But what if the vatican becomes what rome was, what then?
Yes what would happen if the vatican expanded to include all of Rome and became the greatest political and economic trade power in the world
Well, the institutions of Christian Rome were designed purposefully to resemble Apostolic Jerusalem, rather than ancient pagan Rome, deliberately erasing any and all traces of the ancient sacred tribal foundations of pagan Rome. At least as far as the Church Fathers are concerned, the Church of Christ triumphant was wholly victorious over the "Whore of Babylon".
I'm sorry are you saying that it's against the vaticans nature to be that kind of power?
The Neo-Guelfist dream.
Alas, the King of Sardinia-Piedmont got in the way.
