Trade access?

I have a question concerning trade access. When you manage to successfully negotiate a trade access treaty with another country, what exactly does that grant you? I would figure at least the ability to trade with all of the provinces inside their country, whether those provinces border your own or are on the coast. But does the treaty permit you to trade with provinces that border that country? Example, if I manage to negotiate a treaty with the Seleucid Empire, would I then be able to also trade with those Parthian provinces that border the Seleucid Empire on the east?

I honestly do not know. I have never been able to gain trade access, even at 0 infamy with high relations.

If I understand it rightly, it just gives you access to their road network, allowing you to trade further within their country. This is obviously only useful in the mid-to-late game when roads actually become available.

I read in the UN-Off Republic Strategy Guide that leaving a trade route open, encourages the trade party.

Is it therefore better to actually leave one province without a trade partner?

Oops, that must have been an old reference. There has since been a patch that makes open trade routes increase Populist influence.
