So it's the year 1173 and one of my Dukes has managed to get the province of Venice as a Count, so I thought I appropriate to go out and conquer the other province (the name escapes me at the moment) that makes up the Duchy of Venice. Unfortunately, it does not appear in my "Create Title" list, which indicates to me that someone already is the Duke of Venice. But for the life of me, I can't find 'em!

I'm wondering, is there any easy/quick way of tracking down a title's current holder? Whoever has it has other titles, since 'Venice' does not appear in the Load Game Screen in the Duchy list. I've checked all the neighbouring kingdoms' Dukes, but none of them has it and, dag nab it, I want my Duke of Venice!! Thanks :)

most likely it is a landless Duke. Not much you can do against him, unless he is inherited by a guy with a title.

If no rulers exist as his heir, I am pretty sure the title will be free once he dies.

But there is no easy way of locating him in game. Using the search function only works for primary titles, and if they have land.

You could search for VENI in the save game file, to see who (if any) holds the title.

Well, I found 'The Republic of Venice' completely at random ... just north of Georgia of all places. The thing is, somehow the current Governor is a Pagan, so I can't even usurp the title of Duke of Venice from him! *rage* He's much too far away to mount at practical attack on him (I'm playing as Aragon) so I guess I just have to wait it out and hope he's wiped out. Thanks for the info though :)

I first got the Governor of Venice as my vassal, then granted him a couple of counties in Hungary, then tried to revoke the Count of Venice title from him. Eventually worked, so I got one of the richest provinces in the game, and the Republic of Venice is now in Hungary.

Also, the Republic of Genoa doesn't exist. There's now a Duke of Ferrara and Genoa (Genoa was my vassal before, likewise with Ferrara, and Genoa&Ferrara is my vassal) - any idea on how/why the name changed from republic to duchy? Can't remember if they still have elective law.
