I am afraid I have not been given access to this information, the President and his party will be the ones to answer those questions.

I appreciate that the matter may be under investigation, so the Attorney General would have something to say if it were a crime, or the President if it were a foreign attack. We would appreciate it they would make statements and begin press conferences at their ministries.

But as you are in charge of labor relations, was there an outstanding grievance filed by workers at that plant, or other indications of labor unrest at that refinery?

Will the goverment be contributing to the heating fund? Or it is just going to be up to private charities, who are already needing to shoulder more of what the government used to do, given the cutbacks in the welfare budget.

"Minister, when you're done with the good Rev's question," drawls Rapp from the back of the room, "what's the connection between the increased security presence in Farpoint, the explosion at Longarm, and the recent mass all-points bulletin for an armed bank robber put out by the AG's office? Things are looking a mite tense up Farpoint way."

"Well Reverand, unless the President decides to allocate funds from the budget, it appears that no, the government will not. I personally will be shifting funds around my department to see what I can devote to the project. Due to the cuts in welfare, there truly is little I can do.

Mr Rapp, good question. I posed the same to the President in the Cabinet room, he informed me of nothing, and avoided giving me an answer. When I pressed, he informed me that the issue was closed. I am sure that the President will be happy to answer your questions here, although he seems set against doing the same for his ministers."

I have no more questions at this time for the finance minister. I would like to thank him for being the first to step forward. It shows his commitment to open government, and has forced the President into action.

President J.R. Zhokhyen holds a press conference in the press room of the Presidential Ministry.

“Greetings, fellow Eutopians.

“First off, let me express condolences on behalf of all of us to the victims of the Longarm Refinery disaster. This is a tragedy of huge proportion, the after-effects of which we will be feeling for a long time to come. Per Cain, our esteemed Minister of Finance, has already gone over the details of the financial impact in his own conference. Detailed reports on ecological affects I cannot give, though I believe our Interior Minister Per Smith is working hard to control the situation.

“There has been speculation on the increased police activity in and around Farpoint, the notices for a wanted bank robber, and how those may be related to the accident. At this point, those murmurings remain speculation. The work of the Farpoint Police to apprehend a dangerous criminal are, for now, unlinked to the Longarm incident. We have no evidence to suggest the events at Farpoint were anything but an industrial accident. Until the men working under our Attorney General, Per O’Floinn, report otherwise in their investigations, talk of such a link remains nothing but unfounded rumor.

“Mr. Cain was told this, and knows as much as we do about the situation. His assertions that he has been kept in the dark are false.

“On to the budget. Contrary to wait Per Cain said in his recent press conference, I did not set the budget. I proposed it, and the Assembly amended it and voted on it. Mr. Cain’s party, if I recall, voted unanimously in favor of the budget. I have no power in regard to the budget at this time. Contrary to Per Cain’s assertion, only the Assembly may change it at this point. All that I have the power to do is to call for on every Eutopian who can spare a dollar to donate to their local charity or to a national one to help our poorer citizens make it through the winter despite skyrocketing gas prices.

“Many of the budget cuts were aimed at readying a surplus that could be returned to Eutopians. This will boost our economy, and if it can be passed in time, will aid in alleviating the painful winter on the horizon after the Longarm tragedy. If the Assembly does not act on such soon, I will personally propose such legislation.

“Moving on, to cover all of the bases exposed by our gallant free press, New Bengal. We, of course, are appalled by the general situation in New Bengal. Human rights violations by both sides, not to mention a mounting loss of life. Both sides are at fault in resorting to violence. Diplomatic talks are currently underway with Tilapia about the situation, though they have continually insisted that it is an ‘internal affair’. And while we sympathize with the Bengalese for their desire of freedom, their resorting to terrorist actions cannot be supported. I cannot comment on any action on the part of the UPE in regards to the situation apart from diplomatic envoys.

“On a lighter note, I would like to announce that General Marsha Burke, commander of the Sixth Mechanized Infantry Division, is being appointed to the long-vacant post of military Chief of Staff. I am sure that General Burke will be perfect for her new role, and wish her luck in that endeavor.

“Now. Questions?”

"My reaction is one of indignation but acceptance. He is the president he rules as he see's fit. I was told that the issue of the possibility of a link between these actions and the incident in the W.E.T. was not to be discussed. It is my opinion that the government should examine all angles of a situation, even if those angles are not yet proven. If it does turn out to be due to foul play, I want to know, but it appears to me that the ministers will be kept in the dark.

And in response to the President. I do not wish to get into a political debate, but I will not let your attacks go without answer. All I knew about the incidents at Farpoint and in the W.E.T. are what was shown on the news. I and the other ministers not involved were not informed of any such activities or events. I was, for all intents and purposes kept in the dark. And Mr. President, I don't recall your budget being excessively supportive of welfare and social services. My party voted for the budget so we could get things done, which my party has done. So don't drag partisan politics into this and blame the ELP for the lack of money.

"The issue was being fully investigated by the Attorney General at the time. We were discussing the accident in the Cabinet Room, and Per Cain suddenly began demanding to know what the police hubub was about. It was about a wanted criminal, who has so far been unlinked to the Longarm incident. That is what he knew already, and there is no more to it. His insistence that he be told special information well there was none to be given. was counterproductive and wasteful of our energies."

"It is not partisan to point out a mistruth. I was not the only one who had a hand in preparing the budget. It was changed by Colin Leary, and then voted 'yes' on by ninety plus assembly members. And if the Minister of Finance wishes to get a special change in budget to account for the Longarm accident, that is who he should ask. He has the power to propose legislation: I expect he will use it if necessary, as it seems may be the case here."

"Expect me to Mr. President. But also don't expect me to lie.

If you remember, we were discussing your proposed drug plan in the cabinet meeting what I brought up the Longarm incident. You silenced me, and we went back to discussion of drugs. If you'd like to see the minutes I have them with me, or I could publish them if you wish."

Mr. President, the US keeps a large number of prisoners in their base near Farpoint. Did one of those terrorists escape and blow up the Longarm Refinery? If so, is he still at large? If not, what was the point of the meeting you had with American ambassador, as he was seen going to your office and there wasn't an appoiintment with him on the official calendar?

And there are numerous prisons near numerous cities. Every time there is a house on fire, do you ask people whether it was an escapee who set it on fire?

I asked because of the undisclosed meeting with the American amabassador. I would be most happy to hear the actual situation from any responsible government official. But up until now we have heard almost nothing, so what can we do other than speculate idly, hope to guess right, and have the person who is asked the question realize that the truth will come out eventually and if he can be shown to have lied it will not be good for their future electability, so they might as well own up now.

What was the cause of the explosion?

I would like to point out that at that time there were only very few informations known to us to be able to properly debate on that issue. Furthermore...I thought all that is discussed there is meant to be kept purely confidential?

Mr. Minister of the Interior, instead of trying to deflect questions for the President, by attacking the askers, perhaps you could answer a few yourself.
  • What is the expected environmental impact of the Longarm Refinery explosion?
  • Are there sufficient funds in your ministry's budget for the clean-up or do you plan to introduce a supplemental appropriation bill to cover the excess costs?
  • What do you think of Former President Al'Aeshir's proposed environmental legislation?

So far we have no detailed report on Longarm refinery incident and we don't plan to create any until we can be sure that fire is put out. Only then we can safely say what will the results be. None the less I will share all the information I have:

The oil have leaked into the ocean, even though I presume the amount have been considerably large, we can safely say it is being contained well.
From what is known to me, even though I have to admit there were some slight adiministrative problems, the tankers are being sealed by now.
We have issued warning to all affected areas, asking our citizens to boil their water before using it.

This is all I know at the moment but I will gladly share all the information I will get in future with you. Again, it is too early for us to know how much will this affect eutopia.

So far it seems that funds of Ministry of Interior are sufficient enough for clean up, however these are all just preliminary estimates.

I will not comment on per Aeshir's legislature now, it is completely separate issue from farpoint incident.
