England and Spain are very easy.
France, Turkey and Russia are easy.
Portugal and Austria can be hard (Portugal's a tad small at the start!)
Poland, judging from various posts, despite its opening size, can be very hard!

But the hardest-probably the Aztecs in the IGC!:D :D :D :D

Although I agree with Portugal not being very exciting in the beginning I still think it is the hardest major to play.

England is easy-kill Scotland early, and build a load of ships, and your homeland is effectively invulnerable for the rest of the game! This leaves you free to pick your options, and with your explorers and colonial dynamism even being totally excluded from Europe won't really harm you.

As an aside-I learned how to play the game playing an England GC-with no real disasters.:)

Portugal should pick up when you've got a few Colonial cities and a far eastern CoT. Go kill Spain!

Portugal is very tough to WIN with, but the hardest major country to PLAY is Spain. Yes, Spain, because it's spread out all over the place and has more going on than anyone else. If you're "pushing the envelope" (doing everything you can do and more), you will have your hands full. And despite the size of the Spanish empire, resources are not as plentiful as the French or English have.

allemand you are partially right. Spain can be the hardest major to play if you are not using the pause button usually. But to a player planning 15 years later from then, and using pause it should be easy ..

My list of hard majors to play:

1-France
2-Spain
3-Russia
4-Turkey
5-Austria (if you are good enough in diplomacy)
6-Portugal
7-England
8-P-L

For me, the hardest (but still playable) nation of all is Prussia. Hell, I can't get the hordes of P-L cavalry away from my arse :D..

All majors are quite easy really. The one a bit more than the other but still. For a real challenge try minors in the IGC.

Spain is very easy anyway though IMO France is the strongest country in the game :D

That is absolutely right. Given the weakness of the AI about colonial cities (historically true, but in game terms, it makes things too easy imho), you just need a colony or two in the americas and you'll get yourself with a nice colonial power.

Russia is easy for 'peaceful' games but nobody can beat France once she has reppelled the English and conquered Flandres; not even the cheap Russian infantry is a stop.

You guys are talking about 'easy to win' not 'easy to play.' If all your territory is together then your armies can easily defend it. Spain is in the worst position in this respect, with territories spread out all over the map. And like I said before, Spain doesn't have the best of resources, with poorer provinces than the other western powers. That's what makes it challenging, to hold on to every province and at the same time cause France and England (and anyone else who joins the wars) some major grief. That makes Spain a more complex game than the others.

Now, if you're talking about playing Prussia and holding off the monster armies that P-L has, then that's another kind of challenge, although there's nothing hard about it. You just win or die. Circumstances will decide.

Austria can be easy, depending on what you want to do, but then that goes for them all, right?

I think Russia and England are the easiest, and the most fun, to play. As Russia, just keep the Poles and the Swedes happy with diplomacy or a little territory here or there while you expand south and east. It really doesn't get tough until the Russians get into the Crimea and Ukraine. But annex Pskov, and possibly the Teutonic Knights, if you're feeling frisky and keep on trucking.

For England, as many people have said, Scotland is the key. Get it early as possible. I usually wait to declare war until after I've discovered cannons, but you can build enough troops to rush the fortresses at the early stages. I usually let the Irish take ol' Dubh Linn and the French take Calais, otherwise you have two indefensible outposts that will drain your resources. The last time I played, I had all of Australia, South Africa, California, India, Cuba, and North America.

Speaking of North America, has anyone seen the French do much but build crappy Trading Posts in the Great Lakes and Hudson Bay? I don't think I've ever seen a French Quebec or Montreal.

In my view, Portugal is fun in the beginning of the game, because it is really challenging. If you colonize the Indian sub-continent and part of Indonesia, Portugal really kicks ass when the center of trade in Sunda appear. All of a sudden, your income sky rockets, and you can essentially do whatever you want. It is no problem to take total control of the Iberian peninsula, just leaving Spain with their capital (although I prefer to let them keep 3 provinces, then when I want some of the gold producing provinces in central America, I take control of these 3 provinces + the province(s) I want in LatinAmerica, which makes them very soft in any peace negotiation...). I found it not very hard to win with Portugal, but you have to use trade, colonization and diplomacy in the begining, when you are very weak, but when the income boost, you can transform from the peace loving tradesman to an aggresive imperialist.

I think Austria offers most: war or diplomacy, you can chose. Or both. Not much for colonization then of course.
Holland is cool, offers war, little diplomacy and loads of colonizatins.

Pick one of these two

Austria is a tough one, depending on whether the Turks decide to make life difficult for you. Unfortunately, even if you try and concentrate on other goals (Bohemia, Venice), then your allies (in my case Hungary, Papal States) will always try and drag you into war after war against the Ottomans...
Worst case scenario was when half of Hungary was annexed and Turkey jsut wouldn't make peace...this went on for about 10 very long years, with the war attrition from hell.

However I find picking different allies for Austria always ends up with completely different results.

France is easy...grab Calais, Flandern and a few other off the French/English. Make peace with England and then just conquer Spain bit by bit.

Austria is not too difficult. Try to make a historical alliance with Spain. That way you can pretty much trash France. Also include Bohemia for starters. And a couple German minors that you border. I find that military annexation of Hungary is a lot easier and less expensive then the diplomatic way. Afterwards, defend against the Turkes (not too difficult, grab their capital every time, from your Hungarian provinces) and go diplo-annexing Germany, replacing each annexad country by another. Germany should be easy to annex, especially when your monarch Karl V rears his head.

Note that a lot of German minors will go protestant and maybe later reformed. Await the Council of Trent and convert to counter-reformed (= CRC). It gives you CB's on all non-catholic nations. Then annex the rest of Germany. Not in one sweep of course, BB is still present. After Edict of Tolerance you can continue your diplo-annexation. Try to grab one of the Venetian coastal provinces also, that way CRC will provide you with a colonist.

Austria can pretty much kick Europe's ass :D
Excellent leaders & monarchs, cool nation in general. Good relationships to most nations, etc.

Just don't expect Austria to become a major colonial power, and whatever you do, DO NOT convert to protestantism :)
