With so many mods out there it's kind of hard to find good ones that are worth playing.

So I kind of want to get a list of good overhaul mods I could give a shot, updated or at least playable somewhere. I already have the following.

All of em are good it realy depends on what you fancy the most at the moment. One time you might be into GOT then next month LOTR then next SKYRIM just trry em all an dont just support one mod :p

The Winter King, WTWSMS, Historical Immersion Project and After The End are all phenomenal too.
I assume based on the OP's post he is referring to fantasy overhaul mods.

Personally I'd recommend the warhammer mod

I realize that but I don't want to continue to commit more of my time and effort on downloading "Overhaul" mods that only have maps as the only function.

Well I can recommend Geheimnisnacht. It's got unique portraits, events, and mechanics. I may be biased though. ;)

The Warhammer mod is a good one as long as you aren't hoping for world conquest and really want some unique mechanics. The Elder Kings mod hasn't gotten an official release since 2.4.5 but that release is amazing and they allow people to download the SVN version (which is stable in the current version of CKII if memory serves) if you're willing to mess with that. Game of Thrones is excellent if you want to ride dragons, have your prisoners fight to the death for their freedom, or see if Harrenhal really is cursed. Crisis of the Confederation is still in 2.4.5, but it's an amazing mod that, rumor has it, may have inspired some aspects of Conclave (I know for a fact Galle had a system of favors in place before Conclave was announced for instance) and starts out with an extremely dynamic map and power setup. The LOTR development team just recently reappeared about a month or two ago, so I'm not entirely sure what the status of their mod is, but it's a fairly interesting mod as it is.

I'm going to give my opinion on the few conversions I have played, including those you already mentioned because it might be worth to try them some more:
  • A Game of Thrones has been around for quite some time and is really polished and adds quite a few features, including the recently-introduced fear mechanic and tons of lore-based things. It's fairly stable and shouldn't crash much. If I had to choose only one, right now it would definitely be this one.
  • Elder Kings is my personal favourite. However, it's still very much in development, as you can notice through the unusual installation method. Some races are definitely more-flavoured than others and localisation mistakes are numerous. Despite this, there are plenty a things to do, be that emulating Talos in uniting Tamriel or simply surviving the troubled times.
  • Warhammer: Geheimnisnacht. To be honest I only seriously tested it today and I'm not an expert in Warhammer Fantasy lore, but I'm still amazed at the sheer amount of content it adds. Portraits, frame, and a gigantic map, probably the biggest one I've seen yet. I haven't tried everything but there seems to be many varied and complete different gameplay mechanics. My only problem is that there is so much content added that it makes the game fairly slow, so if you're like me and like to run the game at speed 5 you might be slightly annoyed. Definitely worth looking, at anyway.
  • After the End may still take place on our good old Earth, but its nondescript apocalypse shake things up quite a bit. Gameplay-wise, it may stay quite close to vanilla, but it has definitely more than enough features to be worth looking at.
Once again this is nothing but my opinion and if I accidentally insulted devs of the aforementioned mods, know that this wasn't the intent in any way.

Mechanics he says, Mechanics.... I don't think mechanics covers it, seriously... We have without doubt the most comprehensive, detailed and varied mechanical systems out there. Our dueling system, magic system, and non human races are all made to levels beyond the wildest imaginings of the games developers. Seriously, we have spells that explode in your face and kill you, counter magic where enemy wizards can make your spells fail to work. Dynamic experience systems where undertaking magic casting builds and increases your magical abilities over time.

There there is the dueling system, which is entirely dynamic and extensible, where you can actually choose how your going to fight, with what weapons and how you intend to use them... plus some other nice hidden things...

Seriously @illathid Mechanics you say.... Mechanics are what you get in DLC, What Geheimisnacht provides is something more akin to a new game experience....

Say that after you look at the changes to the magic system in our next release I dare you... I will say just this, experience based scaling damage done dynamically with items, traits and regions able to adjust total damage variables and healing. Hell, there is even destiny manipulation, where you can bless or curse people with respect to dueling or respect to plots, and I even have working prophecies :D

Meh a solid 6/10 but an A+ for effort ;) :p
On the reals though I am looking forward to it! I sometimes wish magic in AGOT was so extravagant and a detailed part of the story with lots of variations as opposed to only a handful of people who have the ability to cast more mundane spells

You do have complex prophecies and dragons that could be better done...
Prophecies don't really work in a linear game structure though without it feeling to railroaded where we are not predicting the future but give you a random event then force an outcome to happen instead of it being random. Also the dragons don't really have much else to them :)
