When your own allies:
- fill up and overload every one of your air bases, leaving you very little room to deploy your own wings in your own fcking airbases,
- stack their units on your carefully placed units in low supply areas, leaving your units suffer and die due to attrition,
- Instead of actually managing their armies, they just sit in their own countries and constantly offering you their whole army for you to manage (reloading the game helps sometimes),
- Declaring stupid wars left and right (like the US declaring war on democratic Germany for.... reasons?!)

Seriously, having other nations in your faction (and puppets) sometimes is more of a hinderance than the actual enemy...

Based on this thread it seems the AI has a long, long, way to go. It seems playable if you don't know how the game works.

Coincidentally, I've just replied to your post in the other AI thread and the same analogy applies. There are millions of people who enjoy backing their home team before a big match or taking a flutter on the horses before a big race. They couldn't write out the mathematical equation for pari-mutuel bets, but the game is playable for them. I also know a guy who minmaxes betting: he only bets when he thinks the bookies have got their maths wrong and he is certain to win. I never gamble, but I can see how both types are having fun in their own way. Likewise, role-players and min-maxers can both enjoy this game.

It's not speculation, I just summarized what @podcat said in the recent dev diary thread about AI: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...rformance-and-ai.1070758/page-7#post-23842603

The job advert was publicly available on the Paradox corporate site early last summer.

And if you want to see the fixes he's done, look at the 1.5 patchlog and/or open up the defines file. It's all there to see. The AI is obviously far from perfect, but the game is playable and the AI is regularly being improved. It's just that the task is very, very difficult (@Pyro157's post just below the linked one from Podcat is accurate).

The most pressing AI bug like the ”ai cant see combat” bug was not touched in this patch, it shows some extreme lack of inisight into the current AI. How can it take 8 months to revert bugs in the ai tool introduced in 1.4? Even though it was explained so many times. And many of the added layers just proves the dev didnt understand what was already there.

Here's another AI stupidity - attacking with armor in the alps - 75% penalty on top of other penalties for experience/forts/etc.

They're getting pierced by my heavy tank destroyers so they are taking damage. Attacking in the alps with tanks is a dumb tactic.
That's not the shattered shield icon.

What annoys me the most is AIs declaring wars or offering people to join their faction if they already have tons of enemies.

Like when France and the UK guarantee Finland when im trying to do the winter war.

In a game yesterday with a friend of mine Italy was being beaten bad by france and the UK, yet they still manage to screw my friend(germany) by declaring wars on the Romania/Poland faction through their guarantee on greece and then declare war on Hungary as well which instantly forms Austria-Hungary meaning germany now has 2 more enemies to the east and italy is already losing to yugo and the allies.

Japan not beating China and still declaring war on the allies.

Random Sinkiang joining the Comintern while SOV is busy with germany and almost out of MP and equipment.

I did a playthrough of Communist China, my first real HoI session since HoI 3, historical mode off, hardest difficulty.
Warlords and Nationalist China was gobbeled up, much thanks to me choosing the Marxist Ortodoxy line, and getting the Soviets on my side.
The USSR AI was nice and garrisoned my border and helped me out after I started justifying against Nat. China. However, a few times during the war, usually/each time when we got a major breakthough (or when I CTD'd and had to reload), their battleplan for helping me disappeared and nearly all forces went to Europe. Then then came back. The second and third time it happened, I was prepared. ;)

Japan was justifying war on me several times over three or four years before declaring?! Why?

Fighting Japan was challenging and therefore fun. Along the rivers north/south just west of the Manchuko capital, they brought the advance to a standstill. USSR was fighting in Europe, and slowly losing. (German divisions were full, USSR was 20% at best, they started gaining strength after some heavy lend-lease of Chinese surplus equipment and divisions.)
In the meantime, Japanese had nearly taken Mongolia out, creating a huge salient that I cut off and collapsed, trapping and killing around 15 divisions, letting me win the war in the north. They also started doing amphibious landings on my coast with 3-21 divisions that were killed off. They must have lost over 100 divisions doing that, my "cost" being divisions I could not supply in the north anyway that were scattered along the coast. (Around 36 divs) Had they not spent their forces on trying to take a port, they could have held me on the rivers for a long time. They actually did take a port, but then they wandered off getting land, letting me take the port.

All in all, I think the AI deserves credit, it does know how to defend sort of properly against a player that isn't min-maxing everything. It's a lot more aggressive on landings then before, and that's not a good thing. It's also agressively making breakthoughs, but it just doesn't understand that creating a huge salient is a huge risk.
