Torn between East and West: Scotland and the Byzantine Empire

So here I am, King of Scotland of House Dunkeld.

I'm conquering Ireland, almost made it into a kingdoms and own a little under half of England. I have a strong position inside my country and am set to form the Empire of Britannia. So far, nothing really exciting for the forum.

But what happens is that my mother, a Byzantine princess, becomes Basileus (female form?) out of nowhere and I'm set to inherit the empire soon (she's 72). I saved the game and came to the forum for advice.

I'm familiar with the Orthodox mechanics but not the Byzantine ones. Can anyone give me suggestions as to whether I should shift my power base to Greece, convert and become Greek ; or if I should stay Catholic and Scottish and try and convert the empire into a Catholic one? Does the "restored Roman empire" mechanics depend on being Orthodox?

I should also mention I have an Antipope right now.

As far as I know, "restoring" the empire only depends on you being the Emperor.

You're going to face a lot of revolts, but likely nothing that you can't handle running vanilla CK2. However, it already seems like you don't care much for the integrity of the Catholic church, so I'd keep my antipope around as long as possible in order to weaken Catholicism, and then ditch him for Orthodoxy, conquer Rome, and mend the schism. Better to have a subservient patriarch backing your imperial claim than some upstart power-mad bishop of Rome.

Basileus, Basilis, or Basilissa depending on period, context, and whether you're being intentionally archaizing or not. Empress Irene used basileus so as to distinguish herself from a consort, but she marked basilissa on her coins. Basilis is the more classicizing and humble way of putting it, as it generally means princess or queen consort, whereas basilissa is the closest to basically meaning empress/queen but is a rather... koine word.
