I'm playing as the USA, normal furious. It's 1850, and I'm #1 with... 1150 prestige.

I haven't even done that much out of character; I took most of canada and western australia in a colonial war, and beat up mexico, but that's it.

Thanks to this prestige, I have a hefty lead, despite having only the 8th largest military and the 2nd largest industrial base.

Any thoughts?

I think you also got a lot of prestige out of peace deals.

Is Africa already colonized (claimed colonies)? If not, you can expect a big prestige gain for the colonizing nations soon.

Furthermore, I think you really deserve a high prestige for beating up the UK, although it wasn't completely fair to declare only a colonial war (pretty hard for the UK to hit you back).

claiming large colonies gives you large amounts of prestige, in the Victorian era it was indeed important to have colonies to have some prestige,

i still believe the colonial engine a bit to fast, and the colonial buildings are never destroyed by tribesmen,

altough it's much better in 1.03 compared to earlier patches, :)

Was Belgium regarded as a more prestigeous nation than Sweden, for example? Belgium had the Congo - Sweden had no colonies. Apart from that, they were both equally unimportant in the game period.

perhaps on the military level,

that's why this colony thing is falling in the prestige category, :)

Maybe it should be possible to gain prestige from owning colonies, not just claiming them.

It would be another benefit to keeping territories as colonies rather than granting them statehood.

Although, we would have to consider: Would France have been more prestigious if Algeria was directly made a part of France? Or would it be more prestigious to own huge areas of land without giving them any rights?

In that case, maybe there should be prestige gain for size of empire, something which is tracked for the final score, but I'm not sure where else it's used.

The colonization of the Congo did indeed gain Belguim great prestige, historically.

As a matter of fact some of my claims were destroyed by rebels/tribesmen when my war-exhaustion rate rose way too high and there were rebellions all over my empire. Then there came messages like "native uprising" and when the natives had taken control of the claim it was destroyed. Although this was 1.02.

Errrrrrrrrrrrrr, Belgium was a heavy industrial power in Europe, and a model of industrialized capitalism. Besides, it was of very strategic importance in the eyes of the British.

Any thoughts?

Did you take Canada and Western Australia by taking claims away from England, and then claiming the colonies yourself?

If this is the case, then I agree that there is a problem in balance, but the problem is not the amount of prestige given out for taking colonies. Instead, the problem is in limitations of the AI, in that the AI is very lame in defending claims. Knowing that the AI never retakes a claim makes it pretty easy to take advantage of England in a colonial war (I've read in this forum of players seeing the AI actually take a claim, but I've never once seen it myself).

I'm hoping this will be addressed in 1.04, as I think colonial wars will be a lot more fun, when the AI is paying attention to claims.

A quick test shows it is in my game. One odd thing though, is that if your land demands are greater than your war score then your prestiege gain is exactly your WS. I'm not sure if this is a bug or if you're meant to get more prestiege when you achive a great victory.

In a multiplayer game on Saturday my Neighbor (Prussia) got over 150 Prestige for knocking out Hannover completely and taking nearly all their territory.
Neither of them had allies.
And somehow I doubt that he had 150 warscore... perhaps it has something to do with the core provinces ?

Taking provinces with your own culture(s) in gives prestige as well - and Hannover is all North German ... which happens to be Prussia's only cuture as well - so much prestige gained there.

I have repeatedly seen it not to be true in all cases (but true in some).

For example, as a quick test, I loaded up an Ottoman game and declared on Tripoli. I quickly occupied all provinces with a 100% war score. Settled for 2 small provinces worth 6%. Prestige gained was 5. Did it again and settled for all provinces except for capital. Prestige gained was 5.

There is something else going on.

Hmm, I tried the same countries as in your example and you're right. Maybe it's because it's against an uncivilized country? It's the same vs morrocco, but against the swiss and frence it works like I described.
