So I have 48 worlds - 21 of my own, 21 in five Vassals, and 6 in a Tributary.

If I integrate all of these it will cost me about 2,000 influence. On the other hand I don't get the fleet size points. Of course I'll have to form all those worlds into sectors so I won't get the boost to my industry that running them myself would bring.

And keeping the worlds in my vassals means I don't get the malus for my research.

Since I need 268 worlds to win, I foresee a lot of vassals in my future.

Am I missing anything here?

Intergrating vassals doesn't generate threat, so in my opinion is typically far more efficient for gaining territory. And you get fleet points, the 1000 cap has been increased. You might not get all the resources, but you get some of them (depending on tax level) and all of the research points they generate.

Am I missing something? I don't show the influence cap being raised over 1000. I just checked and it's still there.

And it doesn't really matter what the cap is. I'm looking at expending 2000 points. I'll never reach the cap.

And all those vassals are building Frontier Outposts. An even bigger drain on influence. Dismantling those outposts just means turning over the developed systems to someone else who's willing to build outposts.

You are correct influence cap is 1000, but in your starting post you talked about fleet points and that is what Voidlord mentioned. Fleetpoints cap has been raised, i think to 10000 or so, i'm not sure as the highest fleet cap was something over 3000 for me.
You will increase your fleet points when you integrate your vassal as your population will get more and you will have more starbases which also generate fleet points.

And it doesn't really matter what the cap is. I'm looking at expending 2000 points. I'll never reach the cap.
As you can only integrate one vassal at a time you don't need 2000 points at once only as much points which are stated per vassal. Other way would be to produce more influence per month as will be consumed by the integration.

And all those vassals are building Frontier Outposts. An even bigger drain on influence. Dismantling those outposts just means turning over the developed systems to someone else who's willing to build outposts.
So that's your strategical decision, which one is more important for you. You cannot have both as influence is only increased by tech and protectorates. You have to choose which way you want to go at your current situation. If you need those outpust the integration must wait until your empire is bigger and you can dismantle the outposts.

My materialist, militarist, collectivist insect empire declares wars to liberate -> vassalize -> integrate. I've reached a size on my most recent play-thru that frontier outposts arent really a thing anymore.
