I also would really like more tiers with less techs/tier, but if there is no increase in production efficency it also feels weird. So maybe add a bonus to farmers based on # of biology techs researched and an equivalent for every science category. Also, I want to research new, improved hull components [our BBs now can house TWO Giga-cannons! ].

I need more!
There could be more technologies to increase effectivness of alloy and goods production (separete).
Or one biofuel rafinery turning food into energy.
There could be some weird stuff connected with ethos or ascession perk. Like Biological Ascession having living ships (like hull plating bonus which regenerates)
Or Synthetic Evolotion having drone StrikeCrafts (very fast, very furious, double amount)
Side line bombers strike crafts which are slower but hit harder. More prone to PD.
Repeating upgrade for hull value in %.
Research facillities allowing to specialize in one type of technology.
Upgrade for Starbases allowing to build Small Guns or Point defense.

There is a tech for converting food into energy - but it's machine empire only, and all machine empires start with it.

I would also rather agree that there are too few technologies. But the most important thing is: Technologies shouldn't be the same in every playthrough and for every playstyle. I think this might be the next big patch after diplomacy.
