I don't know if this is an issue but as my experiences I noticed just too few people uses the trains. Now as a train fan this really bothers me. I am trying to connect two most populated districts with railway but only few people (30-40) uses the train. And in order to increase that i demolish the road connection between districts, then they start using. I mean this doesn't make any sense why would anyone want to go to work with cars and get stuck in the traffic instead of using the free train?

Yes, I thought about that too and set my trains between different districts but here are the result.

This line works between a highly populated district and a big office zone. (27000 population)

This line works between residential-office mixed zone and another residential-office mixed zone. They are also highly populated. (27000 - 4600)

And this line works between two highly populated residential districts. (27000 - 9800)

Public transport is free on whole city.

I have the same impression. My train links residential areas to downtown and industrial districts. Stations are feed by bus lines. Few people uses it but the worst thing is that even with low demand trains are constantly jammed up — I have separated lines for cargo and passenger.

Well I am using trains too in my city and they work fine. You just need to take care of a few things.

- Residential to residential is a useless connection. People travel from home to work and vice versa.
- Mixed Zones won't generate that many traffic because many people will work nearby and walk to their work.
- If I take a look at your screenshots it seems that your trains have to go around your city. Make sure using the train is faster then using the car or any other public transport(!).
- Train Stations have only a small cover range. To make them work properly you need Bus-Lines or Metro-Lines that will collect people and bring them to the train stations. Don't forget to build support lines on the office district too.
- You can also use Pedestrian Pathes to expand the cover range of train stations. Connect roads on the other side of the station and build overpasses.
- Never built train stations to close to each other, this will generate congestion and make the high speed of the train useless because it has to stop all the time
