Well, the strength and success of the Soviet counteroffensive was unexpected. The situation seems quite critical in the South. Still, if you have reserves there, or if your forces to the North are less affected, you might be able to do a 'Manstein' and slap the weakened Soviet forces silly.

At least, that's what I'm hoping for. :)

It's very nice to see that your enemy continues to be capable of serious resistance, the massive blows you've inflicted notwithstanding.

Was that picture a pic of the supply levels? ..why did they drop like that? Did you suddenly aquire more territory, or is your supply distance too long?
Could it help to liberate hungary? and Rumania? Maybe occupation policies?
You seem to finally be getting some crude oil in!

I don't know why they sudden drop. The supply situation wasn't great as is to be expected, but to go from "not great' to "catastrophic" in the space of one hour is more to do with the supply system mechanics and balance which is why the PI team have been hard at work! But it adds to the drama...
Yes, I have been thinking of finally giving Hungary its liberty to see if that helps.

End of February - Mid-March 1949 Part II

The Eastern Front Erupts

A week after the Russian counter-offensive began the order was given to all available German divisions to counter-attack themselves.Transport planes had been working overtime to drop supplies in the south and a trickle of supplies had begun to flow by road and rail. The vast majority of forces in the south were still well short of suitable supplies, but there was enough for a few of the divisions to go on the offensive. In the north, supplies were adequate but the Russian resistance was fierce.

Fight To The Death

German forces were soon able to contain most of the Russian counterattacks and after that the German advances began. But they were slow, and the loss of German lives began to increase to unacceptable levels. It was clear, victory in this battle was going to come at a cost.

German Defeat In The Battle Of Mazyr

Despite advances in several provinces it wasn't all going Germany's way.Desperate defending by the Russians in Mazyr proved decisive and there was a grim bodycount for the Germans.

The Battle Of Stolin

In Stolin there was further defiance from 45,000 Russian soldiers who stood firm against a much larger German force.German success eventually came, but the Russians had dealt a significant blow.

By mid-March German forces had advanced in many areas, especially in the north. But once again a lack of supplies was preventing the German armies from making the most of their successes. In the south, the vast majority of the armoured divisions were once again at a standstill and the Red Army was regrouping.

You've come a long way since 1944, but the war seems to be turning into a grind again, after last year's spectacular pocket successes. Has the weather been causing problems for you at all? Spring mud should be arriving shortly...

I noticed two Polish provinces liberated in the last few screenshots. Do you have any garrison forces to deal with that?

Corsica and Sardinia

On the 14th February German paratroopers were dropped on Sardinia where there was only minimal resistance from a USA garrison.

I really like this AAR, I thinks it's the best I have read on HoI3 so far.

Do you think you would've survived without the manpower bug and realistic manpower in the first place? Your losses in the last 3 years seem pretty high.

Who knows what would have happened without the trickleback bug.I guess that's for the next Germany '44 AAR'er to discover and I will wish them luck!
I do think though that it's actually affected the intensity of the game because the Russians have also benefited(their manpower is now over 18,000).

wow japan is still pretty huge, guess america is going with the germany first policy

great aar

The USA has been very quiet of late.I'm tempted to load it up to see if it's guarding the Mexican and Canadian borders with 1,000 divisions!
The Americans have been fighting in the Pacific, but it doesn't look too dramatic.I'm sure that somewhere in the world there must be a massive US army lurking.I just hope that it's not near me...

An excellent, hard-fought AAR. :)

I have to ask, though: What's up with the German manpower pool? It increases *incredibly* quickly, heavy fighting notwithstanding. Game bug? Me missing something?

Game bug. The trickleback effect gives back far more manpower than is consumed in battle.

@IanClacher: Just wait until you reach the Volga/Don lines. If you think supplies are a bitch now, you ain't seen nothing yet.

After its liberation, the new Hungarian government repayed Hitler by lending a mixed cavalry/infantry force. The Hungarian troops were immediately deployed north towards the Baltic.

Several German paratroop divisions successfully landed near to the Baltic ports of Risti and Tallinn.Their objective, to capture and hold the ports.

Inching forwards

German forces continue to advance along the Eastern Front but progress has been extremely slow due to the sporadic flow of supplies. At present, the German armies, especially the panzerarmees are unable to build up any momentum. When able to attack the Russian lines, success is usually quick.Russian forces are very weak, but at present Germany is unable to make the most of its far greater superiority.

Paratroopers Capture Rista and Tallinn

With the capture of Rista and Tallinn, Hitler hopes to deploy the recently acquired Hungarian expeditionary force to the area. The forces are currently close to the port of Koningsberg.

Thinning The Lines

With the majority of armoured divisions unable to advance because of the severe supply problems, Hitler ordered that the Eastern Front forces in the south be reduced. It is hoped that by having far fewer forces the supply situation will improve enough to allow the German advance to gain momentum.
