End of February - Mid-March 1949 Part I
Russian saboteur's destroy vital German train lines
At the end of February German forces were in the final stages of reorganising in preparation for the Spring offensive against the Russian frontline.Winter was still biting hard, and supply lines were stretched because of the weather, the demands of the cold necessitating increased food and winter equipment, and of course by the vast amount of German forces that were positioned across the entire front, sucking up fuel almost as fast as it arrived. Many of the supply routes were also clogged up by the arrival of fresh reinforcements.German logistics was being pushed to near breaking point.
And then, in an instant, all supplies to the southern half of the Eastern Front were cut off when a co-ordianted attack by Russian saboteur's and resistance groups severely damaged all of the main German supply routes into the area.Railways were badly damaged and vital bridges were destroyed.
Then the Red Army attacked....

As German engineers rushed to repair the damage to bridges and rail lines, the entire plan for the Spring offensive was hanging in the balance as Russian attacks increased in number and in severity.German forces in the south were powerless, unorganised and out of supply, casualties soon began to mount. To try to bide some time, Hitler ordered an immediate retaliatory attack against the already half-destroyed Russian capital.
