June to Mid-July 1947
Italy and Sicily
The American amphibious assault on La Spezia continued into mid-June, however it was successfully repelled shortly thereafter.
The German attack on Sicily began towards the end of June.
German troops quickly regained control over half of the island against small British forces.
By mid-July the battle for Sicily looks as though it will be decided in Palermo.
The Eastern Front
After several weeks of heavy fighting across the entire Eastern Front it was becoming apparent to the German High Command that the Red Army was slowly becoming less effective in its defence.German successes were arriving faster and ever smaller German forces were defeating much larger Russian ones. This was very clear in the battles of Luck,Stanislawow and Iwacewicze.
German luck in Luck!
There were still a number of much tougher battles though, such as the ones that took place in Ilia and Janow Poleski.
In early July German divisions were closing in on Bucharest and the coast of the Black Sea was becoming ever closer.Hitler's long-term ambition of cutting off Russian armies in the Balkans had almost become a reality. However, owing to the heavy fighting German forces in the region had become stretched and severely weakened and most divisions were badly in need of reinforcements.
Guderian's 1st Panzerarmee was redeployed from further north to restrengthen the German forces and to ensure that the Russians could indeed be cut off in the Balkans.
Guderian's 1st Panzerarmee en route.
1st Panzerarmee begins to assemble.
