Wow, you reduced the Russian troops in Savarsin down to 20,400 troops (don't ask me, I'm really tired and therefore my math sucks).

Anyone know what the official end date is in 1948???

January 1, 1948. But I'm not sure if you can edit the savegame's files to modify the end date.

If you want to know how to change the end date MANUALLY:

Go to C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron III (the C:\ will vary with most people but it is the default one for most computers).

Go to Common; then open your defines LUA File. At the top should be some numbers, a date. Modify that (I changed mine to January 1, 1956, even though I've never even played past 1938 in HOI3).

May 1947- Hitler's Big Push

The war in Europe had been dragging on for almost eight long years and the continent and its people was shattered. After a severe winter in which Germany was able to sustain significant pressure upon the Red Army, Hitler determined that now was the time to step up that pressure across the entire Eastern Front. He was adamant that a broad large-scale offensive could force the Russian frontlines to crumble. In early May all available Luftwaffe aircraft took to the sky, and the tanks began to rumble forwards...
The result was death and destruction on an unimaginable scale...

Early German victories in Torczyn and Volovets

Italy and Sicily

By early May Allied troops, now led by the British had captured Sicily.Hitler was furious that once again the enemy had been able to gain a foothold.German divisions were heading south from northern Italy and 3 infantry divisions were also being redeployed from northern France.

Americans Strike Again

Just as German forces were moving south from northern Italy the Americans once again launched an amphibious assault on La Spezia. The initial assault saw 38,000 US troops attack a German defence force of 12,000 accompanied by a terrifying series of air attacks.

The Battle Of Poworsk

In one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the entire war, 140,000 German troops defeated 290,000 Russians. It was yet another grim reminder of the true horror that existed on the Eastern Front.

The increasing IC is due to taking back german lands in the noth?

I think mostly due to recent fighter plane production as I've managed to reduce allied bombing quite a lot.

I've been doing some math... since Operation Bear Trap began a year ago, the casualties figures for both sides are:

Germany - 323.900
SOV - 783.164
Total - 1.107.064

The average kill/death ratio for Germany is 2.77:1, the higher being 6:1, the lowest being 1:1.

The bloodiest battle was the seventh, with 53803 casualties for both sides.

If it wasn't for the trickleback bug, I wonder how much manpower would be left now...

Good work....:) Yes, thats quite a lot...and to think I have only been posting the larger battles!!!
I'm sure the manpower would be rather deflated without the trickleback bug, but the game might have been less violent...and violence is good in war.

I notice you are going for a lot of "all-out-offensives" and trying a "broad front advance"..I haven't played HOI3 yet, but is it impossible to go for a spearhead on a limited front, and then surround and destroy? -like stopping offensive opreations in north and center, and concentrating on getting to the black sea to cut off all the russians in the Balkans?
BTW - I think the Western Allies had to suspend operations for a year or more after you eliminated all their troops in Italy and France? They must have had to rebuild almost all their army! (but due to trickleback bug, they could!)

Spearhead tactics work great on HOI3, however in this game it's pretty much impossible at the moment because of the sheer number of Russians because as you break through one province there are thousands more in the province after and so you can't get enough momentum.

I'd try committing more to the spearhead then. Shorten your lines wherever possible and strip your front for extra units, armored or otherwise. It doesn't look like the USSR is really attacking (and you're getting outrageous kill ratios on the offensive while outnumbered anyway), so I bet you can get away with it.

How many variations on 'meat grinder' can you come up with? :) The Eastern Front continues to consume men in astounding numbers.

While the Eastern battles continue to amaze with their scale, it is the thrusts and counter-strokes in Italy that I currently find most interesting. It is very nice to see the AI do a pretty good job of annoying you and switching its targets and tactics.

If you can manage to cut off the Russians in Greece, you'll sack quite some divisions and shorten the frontline quite a bit.

If
a) you don't get manpower trickleback from destroyed units
AND / OR
b) you can destroy that pocket faster than the Russians can produce new divisions

you could try to cut off the Balkans, destroy the Russian forces there, open the Balkans again, let the Russians swarm in and repeat. Although, this is of course gamey.

June to Mid-July 1947

Italy and Sicily

The American amphibious assault on La Spezia continued into mid-June, however it was successfully repelled shortly thereafter.

The German attack on Sicily began towards the end of June.

By mid-July the battle for Sicily looks as though it will be decided in Palermo.

74646597.jpg

The Eastern Front

After several weeks of heavy fighting across the entire Eastern Front it was becoming apparent to the German High Command that the Red Army was slowly becoming less effective in its defence.German successes were arriving faster and ever smaller German forces were defeating much larger Russian ones. This was very clear in the battles of Luck,Stanislawow and Iwacewicze.

German luck in Luck!

29450948.jpg

14666447.jpg

65652827.jpg

There were still a number of much tougher battles though, such as the ones that took place in Ilia and Janow Poleski.

15950417.jpg

96032632.jpg

In early July German divisions were closing in on Bucharest and the coast of the Black Sea was becoming ever closer.Hitler's long-term ambition of cutting off Russian armies in the Balkans had almost become a reality. However, owing to the heavy fighting German forces in the region had become stretched and severely weakened and most divisions were badly in need of reinforcements.
Guderian's 1st Panzerarmee was redeployed from further north to restrengthen the German forces and to ensure that the Russians could indeed be cut off in the Balkans.

Excellent job! With all the success you are having, are you beginning to look ahead? What are your future plans once the Balkans offensive concludes?
