The next years were rather tense for the King Erik. The threat of a war with Russia was high in his mind and his normally personable nature with people failed him at some critical junctions making Sweden’s diplomatic position in Europe all the more weak. That said the artisans of Sweden continued to produce the finest works sought by nobles and rich merchants throughout Europe.

cj9u.jpg
vr7k.jpg

Ultimately in 1585 a new heir for Great Britain was produced. This meant that there would be no war between Sweden and Russia over that at least. The years would go peacefully enough as Sweden worked to ever improve her chances of defeating Russia when the two northern powers would inevitably turn to blows. A new merchant though allowed them to direct the vast trade coming out of the colonies northward to avoid sending wealth to Great Britain. This sent a lot of additional wealth to Lubeck. New facilities were devised but the nation had too little wool or cloth to make investment in that direction worthwhile.

wo8b.jpg

Yet King Erik would not live to see his second child come of age. Passing away in 1589 the King still left a legacy of expansion and improvement across Sweden. The new King, King Karl, was only 12 years of age. He was a charming boy and seemed to follow more after his ancestor Ulrika. Like the Queen he favored the sword but was charming as well. However many thought that he didn’t quite live up to her example. The King was sitting on a chair, the crown sitting awkwardly on his brow, wearing the dark black of mourning. He hadn’t known his father for long and indeed King Erik had spent little time with the boy who had taken his fallen son’s name. With him was the elderly Mrs. Posen who had handled much of his education and her granddaughter Antje.

n32w.jpg

“How does it feel Karl?” She asked, trying to be kindly.

“It…it’s heavy Mrs. Posen.”

“I know…but you will get used to it and grow up strong I am sure. You remember my granddaughter don’t you?” She gestured to the raven haired woman beside her. The boy looked to Antje who was a few years older than he was and blushed, his crown sliding down some over his eyes as he nodded awkwardly.

“I just wanted to say…I am so sorry for your loss Highness.” Antje Posen said quietly.

“Thanks…” He mumbled.

“Would you like to know how things are going?”

“Yes please Mrs. Posen.”

“Well Lithuania is ravaging the nation of Crimea. You know who they are?”

“Nomads descended from Genghis Khan.”

“Very good. Your loyal servant Erik Hard sends gifts as he explores past the Cape in Africa. He thinks he will actually find a new way to India instead of going through the Muslim lands around the Red Sea.”

“Tell him…uhm…tell him his King thanks him for his service.”

“Of course Highness. Overseas it seems that Castile and Great Britain are not contesting our holds in the northern and central parts of the new world. We are doing well in blocking off all the possible landing places for them to head for.”

“Uhm…that’s good.”

“We have also discovered that the Aztec nation, as well as the nation of Mali in Africa have gold mines. This could be a great boon to our nation if we were to take action. How do you feel about it sire?”

“Uhm…we…should invade?” He said looking to her for approval and smiling as she gave a nod.

Overseas invasions would take time to move the soldiers around. Before the wars could be launched the King finally came of age.

5qbe.jpg

With the King of age and the soldiers in position with the newest weapons that Swedish coin could provide they marched against the nation of Mali first. Though the trade through that region was less valuable to Sweden the country itself had easily reached lands that could be claimed and quickly annexed. However if they wanted to colonize the area their long experience in the New World would give them an edge in establishing themselves swiftly. The war took a while only because the King wanted to make the Mali give up one of their subjugated people before taking their mines.

7obs.jpg

It was after this that Poland left the Coalition against Sweden. This left only Russia aligned against the northern nation. Yet no action was taken against them. Instead the Swedish soldiers would move to the strongest native nation in the new world and attack the Aztecs. While the African nations were harder to deal with even the large Aztecs could be turned into a vassal with one all dominating sweeping invasion. Furthermore the diplomatic part of the government had found new ways to manage the wide empire.

22mv.jpg
5evf.jpg

King Karl was a bolder figure than his father had been having personally seen to the subjugation of the Aztecs. He was thinking that it was time to match Russia. A change of name to show being something more than what they were and then an invasion into Russia to show the danger at the border the strength of Swedish Steel. He had the soldiers for a serious push as well as weapons decades ahead of what the Russians could wield.

Thanks. The last post wasn't the most exciting. They had taken out all their neighbors so crushing them had a lot of ground to cover. I do hope to have a nice fun big epic knockdown fight with Russia soon. Hopefully make them release a few nations which would be very nice.

The invasion of Russia was put off. It seemed that the cause belli of pre-emptive strikes wasn’t around yet so the most talented diplomats were sent to form a claim onto a Russian holding. At the same time new improvements were made to the shipyards. Russia was not a sea power however there were others like Great Britain who would need to be confronted one day and the faster they could put hulls in the water the better. Additionally it was decided that the incorporation of the lands of the Livonian Order and bringing their soldiers into the fight would serve better in the effort putting the war off until 1606. Additionally a great painting was commissioned by the King to inspire everyone towards the trouble they would soon find themselves in.

j5hi.jpg
w0gt.jpg

Of also interest was that Castile had changed to become the land of Spain having united Portugal and Aragon under a single banner. Taking Aragon brought holdings in Italy and Sicily giving her a powerful hold in the Mediterranean. The nations of France and Burgundy had also both started to expand into Africa and establish colonies while Great Britain was expanding into the lands of Brazil. Even the Netherlands had managed to survive against Burgundy and put her own colonies into the new world. To ensure Swedish dominance and stability a new Mint was established.

21mz.jpg

Burgundy however was on the way down. Losses continued to mount as land was lost to the Netherlands and to other groups vying for independence. Still it was important to aid the nation for now. Later perhaps moves would be taken to take that branch of the Wittlesbach family and form a union for but now defending her against rebels was important. Just as well the army got some practice putting down the soldiers there as it lead to a new reform for the nation. These reforms would improve the number of soldiers the nation could draw upon and the quality and discipline of the rank and file.

g57v.jpg

“Sire…do you truly plan to lead the war yourself?” The beautiful Antje Posen had assumed the position of key advisor to the King. Many suspected she used more than just her intelligence to advise him. Still the nation had been doing well so there was little to make people complain.

“Of course. For too long have those fools been a threat to our lands. Now we shall deal terrible blows to them.”

“Your allies…are occupied. They will not answer your call to arms.”

“No matter! Russia is at war with the Ottoman Empire. Her forces drawn away. We strike out we cleave out their heart!”

There was a small pause before he spoke again. “Ahem. Figure of speech. Russia isn’t not the danger that others think it is. Tell the soldiers we march on the morrow.”

“As you command…” She said. He was the King and one could only disagree with the King so much. So in 1607 Sweden attacked Russia.

Quickly the difference in Russian and Swedish soldiers became known. Even outnumbered Swedish military could devastate Russian troops.

qh5j.jpg

The danger in the war was the involvement of Spain. If Spain threw her soldiers seriously behind Russia it could make things very difficult for the King. Yet at the same time new developments by the Swedish people ensured that trade would keep flowing into the coffers of the King to ensure constant support for the soldiers at war in Russia.

o7h6.jpg

The war continued well with the fighting being contained to the Russian lands. Each time the two sides forces met a devastating loss would be inflicted upon the Russian military. Two years into the war and Sweden had even sent an advance group deep into Russian lands to siege Moskva the capital of the eastern power. Additionally repeated works of art produced by the finest of artisans in Sweden were being sold throughout Europe for vast sums which only helped produce more soldiers for the war.

25jx.jpg

Within 4 years the vast pool of manpower Russia could normally draw upon had been extinguished. They could no longer support the armies they had in the field and whenever the two sides would meat more of their forces would become wiped out to a man. Spain had not gotten involved aside from occupying a single province in the new world. Finally though 6 years after the war began with a Russia broken and bloodied they would finally accept peace from Sweden. The long occupied nation of Novogorod was given rebirth and freedom splitting up Russia’s lands into two fronts.

o5ub.jpg
p4xe.jpg

With the suffering and beating Russia had taken it wasn’t long before an uprising occurred as peasants went to war with the nation hungry to take their frustrations out on the ruling family of Lancasters who had assumed the throne after one bad succession mix-up.

hhyx.jpg

“And you doubted me Antje.” King Karl was immensely smug and pleased with himself. A great blow had been inflicted on Russia. The greatest threat on their border humbled. In a few more years it would even be time to try another assault against them and perhaps properly claim the lands between Sweden and the newest nation formed from their ruined carcass.

“Forgive me Sire, never again shall I doubt the steel of Sweden. In fact the world knows not to doubt the steel of the Swedish people now Sire.”

82ky.jpg

“Excellent! I swear Antje that this is a good time to be King. Sweden’s might grows and grows. Our lands to the west continue to envelop the whole of the new world aside from those terrible blighted places chosen by Spain and Great Britain.”

“Yes though…have you ever considered India sire?”

“India? Why would we worry about such a place?”

“Well the lands there are full of valuable delights. The establishment of a piece of that territory would see growth for the entire nation as new goods would reach our markets.”

“Hmm…and how do you suggest we reach such a place?”

“We have some island holdings nearby actually. We can dispatch a fleet now to carry our soldiers to the distant land and then invade and crush the native rulers and incorporate them as we did in the new world.”

“Excellent! Do it.”

“As well…certain nations within the Holy Roman Empire…they would I think much rather be part of the Swedish Empire.”

“Wait…really? Who?”

“Oldenburg. Their lands contain Bremen, Oldenburg and East Frisia. Or we could try to make friends with Pomerania. They too I think would prefer to be a vassal of Sweden instead of the Emperor.”

“I will leave it to you to solve. I plan to visit India.”

“You…very well sire. Good luck.”

“Don’t worry Antje. You handle things here and I will handle winning on the battlefield.”

In 1616 the Swedish fleet blockaded the island nation of Ceylon off the coast of the India region. The powerful nation of Vijayanager dominated much of the area but the important part for Sweden was getting the foothold into the region. While the King was doing that in distant warm lands Antje founded the Royal Stockholm University. New tariffs were also established to bring greater wealth into the nation.

5boa.jpg
8d9v.jpg

The island nation is quickly subjugated. The King had been employing new aggressive techniques to assure a swift and complete victory over the people of the territory. The success there lead to the establishment of the East India Trade Company for Sweden using Ceylon as a point to manage continued expansion and trade in the region and across the colonies.

0ngd.jpg
hvun.jpg

The King would stay in the area a while enjoying the local flavor before making the long journey back to find out how things were in Sweden since his departure.

“Ahh it is good to be home. I wonder…Antje? Where are you?”

“You called sire?” The woman quick to kneel before the King as soon as she heard of his return.

“Ahh it is good to see you again. I missed you.”

“You flatter me…”

“Nonsense! What has happened though in Europe?”

“Things are going most interesting Sire. France and Hungary suffer under uprisings and rebellions. The long war with Christian powers has dealt a powerful blow against the Ottoman Empire such that the Byzantine’s have regained some land though they do not rule in Constantinople.”

“Really? Huh…”

“Furthermore our expansion into the east has provided us with maps of the region we never before had access to.

q19k.jpg

The King pours over the documents. “We should be able to find a route to China though here. Access to that land…who would have believed we would find a sea route all the way there. Then the ocean between the New World and the Orient. Do you think perhaps there is another great land between them?”

“I have consulted the wisest of our scholars. They think that it is possible some land does exist but nothing as great as we have discovered. Additionally the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire enacted new reforms centralizing more power under his rule.”

“No matter about them. Continue to have our explorers work in the far east.”

“As you wish. The military is using a new massed fire technique. Firing as one inflicts far greater effect than shooting whenever you can. Furthermore we continue to see more improvements to our trade thanks to expansion into the east.”

iaa0.jpg
iewp.jpg

“How are things with Pomerania? Did you not claim that they would become our vassal?”

“A small…problem there sire. Their lack of proper Catholicism keeps them from accepting. However there is another development that demands your attention. Burgundy has no heir.”

“Interesting…I sense opportunity.”

“Yes now…there is a small thing to be considered here. We can probably get Pomerania to join us still. Either waiting 3 years or involve them in a war and call on them. The bond of them aiding us will be the final piece needed to get their alliegence.”

“Crafty! Suggestions?”

“We could invade one of the minor nations amongst the Spice Islands?”

“Too far from us Sire.”

“Pity…No. We will have a few years of peace. If King Charles can have an heir by the time we establish Pomerania as a vassal we shall leave them be. If not then after we establish ourselves as the lords of Pomerania we shall claim the throne in Burgundy.”

With a plan set into motion King Karl focused as always on the military in Sweden. Always preparing for the next battle. The next expansion. The next people brought into the fold of Swedish rule. The army was an important part of the culture of the nation. Not all was peaceful as the nation’s staunch support of the Pope produced some issues. Ultimately Pomerania accepted the offer to become a vassal of the more powerful King while King Charles was able to produce an heir.

3a0w.jpg

However the King would soon pass and the throne passed to his younger brother. King Adolf Fredrik von Wittlesbach was a man who had long endured living in his older brother’s shadow. He had long assumed a manner of a wastrel and lay about only to surprise everyone upon his ascension to the throne with sudden wit and brilliance.

King Adolf arranged a marriage between himself and the third daughter of the King of Savoy sealing the alliance between their two nations in 1623. He also continued to build up the army which now numbered more than 70,000 soldiers ready for war. Most based still in Europe should war erupt again with Russia. At the same time the benefits of eastern expansion were still making new impacts throughout the nation.

h4rg.jpg

Sweden was now fielding the third largest known army. Easily enough to compete with Russia though their allies in Spain were a more troublesome issue. Properly incorporating the Aztec lands should fix that at least to bring further balance between the nations. However not everyone in Sweden was feeling as heroic as their ancestors had been. Peace has that effect sometimes on people. When things are good they do not wish to risk what they have. Sunday schools started to be established throughout the nation as well to teach a proper Catholic upbringing. However military education for those with the right talents was also brought into University in Stockholm.

uphr.jpg
wxvm.jpg

1627 finally saw the vast lands ruled by the Aztecs properly incorporated into the Swedish nation. This gave them a large boost in manpower, trade, land, and everything. The Aztec lands were heavy in gold as well which soon were flooding into the coffers back in Stockholm. Then at the urging of the nobility King Adolf had his cousin he started to make tentative attempts to form a marriage between his cousin and the elder sister to the King of Spain. However before anything could be reached between King Carlos and King Adolf disease struck Stockholm and claimed the life of the King leaving Christian in charge of the nation.

vdx5.jpg
jfmg.jpg

It wasn’t long before King Christian was tested as the bonds established by King Adolf were used by Savoy to pull them into a war. King Christian would honor the alliance. It was interesting as it would be only a matter of time before Pomerania would become part of Sweden and leave the Empire which would hurt the relationship with the nation later on.

mffw.jpg

The sudden change in leadership had put the Posen family out of the King’s inner circle. King Christian whose wife was the sister to King Charles von Wittlesbach who ruled in Burgundy instead chose to follow his own course. Avoiding more marriage ties in Europe he invaded the rich lands of Majapahit sending the talented Axel Palmstruch to lead the forces into the region. Additionally he funded an expansion to the Swedish army. Then when disease returned to Stockholm he swiftly abandoned the city for his personal safety.

5hms.jpg

Dominating over the people’s in the Mexico region, Sweden had renamed the lands held by the Aztecs and around them after their incorporation, demanded growing improvements with religion to convert the millions living in those lands. Religion also served well in bringing a disciplined spine to the Swedish Steel. Their enemies would tremble as these blessed soldiers enforced the will of God and King.

“Your highness? We have heard that you have put forth a claim to the Bavarian throne.” Lord Stanly, one of those who had risen high in the New World and thus been given a chance in the greatest of European courts was conversing with the small but perpetually serious King Christian.

“Of course. They are perfectly placed in the heart of the Holy Roman Empire. Furthermore Hungary is likely to soon enough see one of the family on their throne. It should be possible to claim both throne’s in due time and give us a huge expansion in the heart of Europe. It will make King Carlo in Savoy furious but it will be the best for Sweden.”

“We haven’t had time to build up the navy though! The newest ships and cannons haven’t even had their hulls started on.” Complained Lady Stok, wife to Admiral Stok, a sycophant if there ever was one.

exej.jpg

“We will not need it. Savoy is being destroyed by French forces. They will not interfere in our expansion. Even if they try they will swiftly fall. There are four great nations in Europe. Spain, Sweden, Great Britain and France. None of them have interest in Bavaria. When we win we shall build a monument to our victory!”

s732.jpg
40ue.jpg

As predicted the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire did not get involved in the war. However longtime ally Burgundy did. Sadly this meant some 15,000 of their finest soldiers would be killed and sent packing back to their homeland. Bavaria itself had waxed and waned over the years in central Europe but never seemed to grow much beyond her traditional borders before shrinking. Hungary ultimately saw a Hapsburg on their throne instead of a von Wittlesbach. It would take nearly 2 years for the capitol of Bavaria to fall but with that accomplished the rest of the nation was sieged. The victories whenever the two armies would meet were based around two things. Superior numbers of the Swedish nation and superior soldiers. Furthermore Sweden was experiencing a period of great stability thanks to new courts.

While the war went into its third year a new minister out of Finland brought with him several major developments to improve Sweden. King Christian would personally reward the man later as he remained busy in Bavaria personally leading the war effort there.

9jwp.jpg
0t42.jpg

Just as King Christian had claimed. Bavaria’s throne was claimed and the nation made part of Sweden. The war had taken four years but given rich valuable territory for the Kingdom. The nations around Bavaria were furious but did little aside from throw a few harshly worded phrases around. Sweden was triumphant.

With those nations all gathered together in their anger over the moves of Sweden the insults were delivered to King Christian in Stockholm. He ignored them as there was something much more important pressing on his mind. His son was ill. He had consulted the doctors but they said that only God could save the boy so he went to pray. He was a loyal follower of Christ who had spread the word all around the world surely that would be worth something?

That along with the loss of control of the Papacy led to a rather large problem. The court no longer had the same number of diplomats so the advances in making Pomerania incorporate into Sweden was lost. This of course led to the King feeling rather depressed. Hunting did not cheer him up. He barely bothered to hold court. Instead important ministers were given freedom to impact the nation in large ways. At least the military continued to receive the funding needed to ensure Sweden’s continued strength.

The invasion of Bavaria seemed to be a harbinger of turmoil in Europe. France was suffering a massive war with Spain and losing. Great Britain had joined the war effort against France on the side of Spain and most of southern France was held in their grip. Depending on the demands made on France when they won the war the maps would need to be redrawn. Outside of Europe though the new world continued to see Sweden dominating the majority of the northern and central regions with Spain strong in the south.

“Sire…you really must get out of your funk.” King Christian had sent everyone from his chambers, alone in his throne room but for himself and his wine. At least…he thought he had been alone. Lifting his head he turned to look at the speaker.

“Who goes? I am…I am the King. I told everyone to leave.” Rising unsteadily to his feet and grabbing the sword leaning against the throne.

“Just one of your loyal servants your Highness. I am Konrad Jagiellon. I married one of your cousins, the fair Anje.” Came the voice of a tall slim figure coming out from one of the side doors, his arms spread wide to show he was unarmed.

“Anje…I remember her…what are you doing here though?”

“Merely here to help sire. Anje, she worries for her King you know.”

“Hah…I bet…so what can you do hmm? Can you bring my son back?”

“Not as such…but there are other things.”

snd5.jpg

“Bah…like I care for that…with my death the war with Bavaria…will be made pointless! I have no heir. The union with them shall end. Spain…Spain has humbled France and taken some of their lands and made them give up others to form Toulouse. My house is in ashes…”

“Christ you are dramatic…” The man muttered as he helped the King back to his throne and refilled his cup. “Besides you do have a son.”

“I do…since when?”

“Well you may not have noticed in your stupor sire but your wife was pregnant. You have a son named Karl Gustav von Wittlesbach, heir to Sweden.”

dwsv.jpg

“…I…have a son.” Seemed the wine was still heavy in the King.

“You do…and nobles complaining. I don’t think they liked the integration of Pomerania.”

wp47.jpg
5f7s.jpg

“Bah. Do whatever makes them happy. Also…that nation we discovered in south America…the Inca? Invade them.”

“Of course sire. No need to worry sire about things. Me and Anje will take good care of your son. The Inca will make a good part of the nation. As for Bavaria…while you drank we worked to ensure they would remain loyal. Their anger over the invasion has subsided.”

With King Christian nearing his 60th birthday Sweden continued to be very active. The Inca had been turned into a vassal nation. Furthermore even if the King was only slowly pulling himself out of his depression exasperated by his age the nation was continuing to develop in numerous ways with new ideas and new weapons being brought into play.

vnfp.jpg
kjkk.jpg

However the needs of distant allies would demand the King take action. Hungary was at war and called upon their allies in the north. Even in his cups the King was a man of honor and would honor the call to arms even though it would put him against Spain. The clash of Europe’s two strongest nations. It also makes Sweden have to fight their ally in Lithuania.

e1h9.jpg

Some 50,000 soldiers would move first into Lithuania with the hopes of making them leave the war so that Sweden could focus on defending Hungary. Though they seemed unwilling to give up the damage was swiftly done enough that they would not be a serious issue and the focus could be put on Venice where the main threat was based.

m4q4.jpg

The first major battle would be in the Austrian mountains where Swedish led forces met and won over a large Spanish force. Neither side dominated the battle however. However it was important in these early battles to win to establish strong forward momentum.

xhiq.jpg

The Swedish military would soon move into Venice itself. With being the leader of the war and only possessing a mere four provinces taking all four would provide complete victory and let Sweden dictate some very beneficial terms in spite of the power of Spain backing them. The next major battles would again be between Spain and Sweden led armies this time in the small territory of Mantua. The armies were however led by the Syndic of Switzerland who proved a poor commander constantly getting out maneuvered by the superior Swedish general Adolf Frederik Lindschold.

3kck.jpg
jglf.jpg

To get around Spanish blockades required innovative new trading techniques and merchants going ever farther abroad in the search of profits. With the battles in Italy having devastated the Spanish reserves of soldiers the idea of using the war as a way to cut them down some became very tempting to the King. In fact with the damage to the Spanish manpower reserves Swedish soldiers marched into Spain proper itself to begin to siege Madrid.

kbap.jpg

Ultimately though King Christian had to cut the humbling of Spain short. Venice was completely defeated. The people wanted peace. So he cut a deal with Spain to make them release Granada then made a deal with Venice. This gave Sweden a foothold into the rich lands along the Mediterranean coast. Furthermore the nation of Mantua was being set up perfectly to become a vassal soon.

fln4.jpg
otqw.jpg

The war had taken a great deal of time though. King Christian was nearing 70. The army was in even finer condition after the war and his son was almost of age. He was old and going blind but Sweden’s might continued to wax strong with each passing year.

I was quite pleased with how the war went with Spain. I need a few more of those who share Sweden's dynasty to have bad luck with heirs though I think. Burgundy has been really quite stable for a while and that upsets me. Thanks though.

Read all the way through this at once. Very fun reading!

May your House continue to find success!

Thanks! I do imagine that baring some terrible accident at sea destroying my armies I can probably be assured of continued prosperity. Which could happen.

1660 sees a powerful Sweden of course. King Christian is 70 years of age but talented ministers produce fine improvements across the land while the King remains in Stockholm where he would husband the remaining health and strength he had. While a great deal of land in the main European Swedish holdings are often too cold and snowbound for proper farming the lands in the west across the sea can easily see benefits from clearing away some forests to expand production and farmlands.

go3i.jpg
2il4.jpg

The old King could only last so long. He would see another fine minster produce a great work that would be quickly copied and spread throughout his kingdom before passing on to leave things to his young son. King Karl was 18 years of age when he took over having been conceived in King Christian’s elder years. He was young though, charming, ambitious. His wife part of Savoy’s ruling family.

98ek.jpg
ny8x.jpg

His ascension to the throne started with several major changes. First of all he started to remove the Inca leaders and replace them with Swedish ones as the first stages of incorporating the vassal into Sweden properly. Second he began construction of a grand monument in Stockholm as a display of the power and glory of the nation. Its completion would see Sweden follow the example of Spain and Great Britain. No longer was it Sweden ruling the north of Europe and most of the new world but Scandinavia! With the change came some justifications for war with Russia. No surprise that the King took the opportunity to make plans to fight against them. Russia was an ally of Spain but with the fleet recalled from the Indian Ocean it was expected to not need to worry about Spain. With Russian trying to once again reconquer Novgorod it was the perfect time too. So it was that in 1665 after moving armies and navies into position the soldiers moved east to take lands they had claims on. The first battles seemed to set the tone for the war.

ah5i.jpg
ghce.jpg

The war saw new developments which would have been very useful in the months prior. Twodecker ships would have been perfect in devastating the Spanish forces. However the limes were the most useful for the Scandinavian fleet with the war already underway. The new improvements for the firearms wielded by the army though would make sure any victories against Spanish forces were all the more one sided.

57vf.jpg
xhkd.jpg

Several devastating battles would see many more deaths on the side of Russia before a large piece of their western holdings were given to King Karl. Furthermore a little more was given to Novgorod and Ryazan was given its freedom. A crushing defeat to the Russian monarchy while a glorious victory to the young King.

iu05.jpg

It was important to spend a few years properly absorbing those conquered territories into the nation before taking any moves as well as letting the nearby kingdoms and republics calm down in the face of their expansion. This meant it was the perfect time to absorb Mantua and build up holdings within the Mediterranean. A new fleet of twodecker heavy ships would also be built to replace aging galleons. Scandinavian ships had also circumnavigated the globe though the great Pacific Ocean was still mostly unmapped. The integration of the Inca was also completed in the peacetimes following the war with Russia.

rwoz.jpg

Burgundy was in a weak position as well. Repeated failures to defend themselves against uprisings in their lands had led to the loss of prestige for the nation. Their throne could be claimed and the military would have no problems subjugating the lands. Another option was to take the battle to Great Britain. They could likely be humbled by forcing them to give up their northern holdings of Scotland to reduce their control of the North Sea. However keeping the other nations from banding against him would require ever more diplomats.

“Hmm…a letter. Ahh, the royal mark of the von Wittlesbachs of Burgundy.” King Karl was in Stockholm relaxing. “I wonder what they want…” He said as he broke the seal with a deft cut of his letter opener and then read aloud.

“Dearest cousin. Your victories are legendary across Europe in how you humbled the Spanish Bull and the fearsome Russian Bear. The battle of Kexholm is already being made into a grand play here in Bourgogne. In fact I would love to invite you to the opening night however…small problem. It seems that we got ourselves in a tiny bit of a kerfuffle with the King of Hainaut Guillaume von Wittlesbach. Seems that Spain has his back. If you could help us surely we could ensure that the play got off the ground quickly so we can all enjoy.”

King Karl put the letter down and rose up. They had long been allies to Burgundy and though at times some of the Kings debated abandoning the nation they had never done so and never would. The Swedish forces would move to fight for Burgundy and for the common bond the two people shared.

duwx.jpg

The first part would be in breaking the armies of Savoy that were making trouble for the brave soldiers of Burgundy and catching the Emperor’s forces in his own lands quickly dealt a heavy blow to his numbers. Ulrik Wallenburg may have gotten the position as general due to his close friendship with the King but he knew how to fight and lead. He would eventually massacre the Emperor’s soldiers after catching him in a deadly pincer maneuver. If there was a relationship that would probably have to be given up on it was the connection to the Emperor.

z9g2.jpg
d3f7.jpg

The King hadn’t become personally involved in the war yet as another call for aid came from Lithuania. Once again King Karl would send his support to those he shared bonds of time and blood with. With Mantua brought into the fold the soldiers who had been stationed near there in Verona to keep down rebellions could be brought into proper combat against the new dangers.

ue94.jpg
rui2.jpg

However things quickly snowball into another conflict. Suddenly King Karl finds himself at war with Hesse for the remains of Hainaut. It seemed that even if they were at war the King of Hainaut did not want his lands to not be ruled by someone not of the bloodline. So war over the throne begins. Those diplomats seemed to have been paying off. This puts up an odd situation though. Hainaut is no longer part of the war for its territory and neither is Scandinavia.

jgok.jpg
qhk2.jpg

Meanwhile the battles being waged were producing interesting results. One of the Electors of the Holy Roman Empire was now a vassal of Scandinavia. Emperor Carlo in Savoy would be furious but no matter. Yet another reason that once all these wars and such were sorted out to break off the bond with the Emperor.

4n5s.jpg

Soon another peace is brokered. The odd location of the war means there is no real benefit in making it a protracted affair. Furthermore the forces involved make Hesse soon yield and give up territory to the Palantine which ultimately is a gain for Scandinavia seeing the vassal regain some lands. They would eventually become part of Sweden unless the future rulers decided to try to break the Holy Roman Empire for which dominating all the Electors would be needed.

z838.jpg
x9eh.jpg

Things were getting more complicated now as a war with France broke out. Related to the coalition that they had found themselves part of it wasn’t that the King feared the soldiers of France merely that all these defensive wars were slowing things down for him. At least the conflict with Spain is over. Hainaut remains under a union with Sweden peacefully now. This lets King Karl focus all of his might against the French King, Charles de Valois the thirteenth. Then Russia attacks. Two large wars now.

g4sj.jpg

France had been at peace for some time and thus had some powerful forces at their disposal. Thus it was even more important that the wars be won decisively. As such Ulrik would lead the battles and bring triumph to Scandinavia. The eastern front had to be left undefended though to make sure they could win the battles in the west first. With the wars dragging on a cabinet was formed to help manage things while the King was occupied.

93ae.jpg
fya1.jpg

A few more battles devastated the French military leading to a chance for peace. Wanting to deal with the two other coalition wars King Karl took it. The increase in food production was also doing good in keeping the military manpower reserves high so even in the middle of Europe fresh soldiers would keep reinforcing the King’s armies. It had been 8 years of solid war and it was important to find some peace. The people of Scandinavia were getting weary of the long war used to quick decisive battles before these wars broke out.

ixb5.jpg
j0by.jpg

Still peace meant that new focus could be turned eastwards where Russia had been having some successes due to the distraction faced by King Karl in western Europe. The bear was about to learn that invading Europe’s most powerful nation was never a good idea. While a simple white peace was acceptable for France King Karl’s other enemies would not be offered such generous terms.
