By popular demand(2 people) I have decided to go for a round of being…Sweden. Yes the Blue Blob of the north! I have turned off lucky nations for this. No bonuses to AI or Player. I would happily go with Ironman mode but it makes lucky nations go to historic. I don’t need history to follow any historical trends! Anyhow so yes Sweden. Interesting start in 1444. They are in a Personal Union under Denmark. Norway is as well. There are two ways out of this situation. First I can launch a rebellion against them. Second Denmark through some tragic deaths could lead to a regency in Denmark which upon the ending would free Norway and Sweden from the grip of the Danes. The latter is our preferred method of escaping their dominance since it means we don’t have to fight against Norway, Holstein and Denmark in one go.

Things will start off a little impersonal than once I have my own ruler hopefully a more narrative person based direction for the AAR. Personal goals will be the formation of the Scandinavian nation and the colonization of North America.

1444 Sweden. The King of Denmark, King Christopher von Wittlesbach the Third, ruled over Sweden and Norway directly while the nation of Holstein was a vassal to the King. A pretender for the throne, Eric of Pomerania, was in Gotland stirring up trouble. Denmark quickly sends soldiers to it to reclaim the territory. Most of the nation is Catholic but for the single province of Lappland and missionaries are swiftly sent there to convert the populace. Furthermore a diplomat is sent to the Papacy to earn the Pope’s favor. The King has himself quite the reputation though spreading throughout Sweden as people fear his wrath. The monster also restricts booze sales by passing the Liquor Act. This will control the sale of Gin and other spirits by putting fees on its sale that go straight to the treasury.

cfoy.jpg

May 7th of 1446 sees a son born to King Christopher von Wittlesbach the Third. The boy is named Christian and he will assume his father’s throne when he passes. Should Christopher die too soon though the boy will see a regency manage the Kingdom. Such would lead to freedom for Norway and Sweden. With Stockholm one day being a powerful city for Denmark(or maybe the seat of power for a free Sweden) King Christopher directs that money be spent to improve the city.

ohlh.jpg
8fsp.jpg

On the 13th of July in the year 1448 King Christopher launches an invasion of the Teutonic Order to try to claim the territory of Danzig from them. Yet the people of Sweden hate being a tool for the expansion of the Danish King and a story moves through the populace about how a mighty King will return to save Sweden in her hour of need.

8jlz.jpg
klt4.jpg

With Hungary and Bavaria moving to side with the Teutonic Order the forces of King Christopher have little success in claiming Danzig. At least the sea power of King Christopher maintains control of the waterways in the region. Swedish soldiers do not bring any steel or guns to the fight seeing a lost war in the efforts of the King. Yet though restricted by Danish rule the people of Sweden have hopes and dreams for something greater. To that end superior weapons are provided to the army should they have to fight against the King of Denmark for freedom.

8qwx.jpg
bzwp.jpg

The war ends with a loss for the King of Denmark. On a wider scale the opinion of the King is at a low point as few believe in the strength of Denmark after their loss trying to take Danzig. At this point if they are unable to turn things around it would lead to the dissolution of Personal Union under Denmark with his death. A man even starts to wander Sweden singing of how terrible the King is. He speaks that one day soon will come a new King to lead Sweden. A great and glorious man sure to lead the nation to pre-eminence in the world. This builds well with the events of not long ago which had seeded the idea into the public mindset.

7cke.jpg
h1ho.jpg

Meanwhile the people of Sweden and Norway grow closer together through a common dislike of King Christopher. Nothing like hardship to bring two nations together.

q7l1.jpg

Yet the people of Sweden remember ancient stories of a land west of Iceland. Inspired by such stories Knut Sandels leads the Barque known as the Engel westwards to explore the distant oceans. Challenging to be sure since Norway refuses to provide fleet basing rights to the Swedish people even with the growing closeness between the two peoples.

yn4o.jpg
vgah.jpg

Denmark launches another war that will lead to some terrible losses for them once again. An invasion of Bremen which brings Austria into the war. The situation though of being at war with another land brings Norway and Sweden close enough that they give fleet basing rights to Sweden which means that Engel can launch his western expeditions out from Iceland. Such it is that when he returns it soon becomes famous across Sweden that he has discovered lands west of Iceland. In Swedish history books May 6th of 1459 is the day that Knut Sandels discovered a new continent. Just scant months later sees the death of King Christopher III von Wittlesbach on the battlefield against Austria. From the same family Karl VIII von Wittlesbach will be King of Sweden. The 26th of October of the year 1459 sees Norway and Sweden free from the rule of Denmark. A new age for the free people of the north!

Standing upon one of the great balconies of the royal palace looking out over the city of Stockholm stands King Karl. 18 years of age the man is an older cousin to the 13 year old King Christian in Sweden. Tall with sharp blue eyes, golden hair tied back and a carefully trimmed beard he is quite the figure in the royal attire of Sweden. New to the throne perhaps but possessed of a powerful personality that drew others to him and was quite the handful growing up with the maids. Approaching him is his seneschal the noble Wilhelm. A man of German descent he has long served though in Sweden as an able administrator for several decades now and was a man who took great pride in his long greying moustache.

“Congratulations on your coronation sire.” Came his thin voice.

“Thank you Wilhelm. I am glad you decided to stay.” Karl does not turn yet, looking out still across the city.

“How could I leave? My wife she is Swedish. My sons they grew up in this very city. They too have marred women of this land. I may have been born far away but this land is my home.”

“A good point. Speaking of being married I should probably get myself a wife. Any good prospects out there?”

“A few sire…it would be easy to start close to home though. One of your cousin’s perhaps from Norway?”

“We will need them for a united north. I recall that Helga is yet unmarried. Send word about it to King Olav about his sister. Along with it seek an alliance with him. Norway will not only be one day part of a unified north but they are the gateway to the west.”

7uya.jpg
dhos.jpg

“So it is true then? Knut discovered lands west of Iceland. Lands with people even?” Even with this momentous news the voice of Wilhelm did not chance. He was a figure who could calmly speak of the return of Christ without a change in intonation.

“Very true. He has shown me this map they have managed to produce. The people were for the most part most unwilling to permit his presence but there was one small piece of land that seemed uninhabited and could make for a strong outpost.”

wkxa.jpg

“There are a few other outstanding matters that need seeing to sire. The Austrian’s continue to dominate the forces of Denmark. The fleet has been positioned to deny them easy passage into our lands but…we are unable to beat the Emperor in my humble opinion.”

“I agree Wilhelm.” He says and turns, walking back inside with his blue cape billowing behind him a moment. “We must sue for peace from the Emperor. Perhaps we can use some of those gifts the people of Sweden have sent to me in honor of my coronation?”

tg5c.jpg

“I doubt that will work to make the Emperor let us free of the war. We should bide our time. If we let your young cousin King Christian and his regency council weaken themselves fighting it we can take action against them when the Emperor makes them bend a knee.”

“Most cunning. Denmark bleeds their armies, their treasury, their will to fight while we hold back. Let me guess. Your next suggestion is that I invade Denmark as soon as we are no longer fighting with them? Claim some of those southern lands that have been historically seen as part of Sweden?”

“I see your education has not been wasted. I hear that Skane is quite nice this time of year.”

“Quite right. Any other suggestions I should know?”

“Just two most honorable King. If you hope to fight Denmark I know a few retired commanders from Bavaria who could teach our forces a thing or two. Also if you plan to follow through on those ambitions for Sweden to have lands across the ocean there are a few improvements to the bureaucracy I could suggest?”

“Costly suggestions I imagine?”

“Everything has a price sire.”

“Very well do it. Also see about establishing a single set of units for Sweden to use. I recall quite a sleepless night converting stones to perches to pikes to noses.”

me8r.jpg

The war would continue onwards until the 17th of May in 1461. Mercenary soldiers hired by Denmark had made the battle’s slow down and the Austrian Emperor was quite willing to accept a White Peace from Sweden. Sweden was at peace for the first time since they gained their independence. Rather than risk pulling in Denmark’s allies by invading right away Sweden would bide its time and reap the benefits of Wilhelm’s suggestions. Additionally the King of Muscovy seemed to desire another ally to the west across from Novgorod and sought to marry one of the numerous and dangerous Rurikovich women to one of Karl’s own kin.

rifb.jpg

The years of taking the reins of Sweden led in turn to a chance to host the nobility from across the cold lands at a Grand Ball. King Karl and Queen Helga would of course attend, as well as nobility from Sweden, Novogorod, Norway, Denmark and Muscovy.

fwnc.jpg

“Your Majesty, such a grand gathering. Truly Stockholm is the jewel of the fjords.” So said Katarina Rurikovich. A woman of great…presence she tended to dominate those around her. Certainly her choice of dress at the ball made one think of the great hills of Muscovy.

“Thank you very much Lady Katarina. It is thanks to things like the trade that flows west from your homeland through our great marketplaces that we have risen to such heights. That and freeing ourselves of that war with Austria that Denmark continues to get involved in. Well what can you expect of them? Small nations seem to bark the loudest no?” This comment of course drew laughter from those around the King, aside from those actually from Denmark of course.

zols.jpg

“So your Majesty, how goes Knut Sandal’s explorations to the west? I notice that grand map you have put up on the wall there but some say that it is all just made up. Knut sails to Reykjavik and gets drunk for a few months, scribble a little down and sails home.” Frederick von Ulrick spoke up. The man was a patriot and it was no surprise he did not like the King. Many were in fact surprised he had been invited at all.

“Oh it is very real my good man I assure you. I heard the news that France is at war with Austria as well. Lucky break there with the French decimating the Austrian forces no?”

“King Christian always expected them to take action against Austria. It was merely a matter of taking a stand against a King who thinks too highly of himself. In fact I have it on very good news that the Emperor has been forced in the face of overwhelming strength to yield Stade to the Danish throne.”

“Is that so? Well everyone let us all lift our glasses to toast King Christian of Denmark. May he be more successful at war than his father was.”

“Now see here…I will not abide such veiled insults against my King.” With that Frederick turned and left. King Karl let him go with a small smile turning to speak softly to Wilhelm. A few words were whispered back and forth between them before the King nodded and turned back to his guests while Wilhelm went off to see to some private matter.

“Such a passionate man. A pity he is not here to hear about the other developments here in Sweden. His country could learn a thing or two from our example. Such as how we have introduced a system of rotating the fields. Even a cold land such as ours can be tamed thanks to our ingenuity.”

ycu0.jpg

“I have noticed your that the honor guard who were at the gate’s carried quite the group of weapons. Does Sweden expect war soon? You seem a peaceable nation.” Spoke Katarina Rurikovich. “Not quite like we Rurikoviches. Much less kinslaying.”

34ne.jpg

“More than just that. The tireless works of Knut Sandal though mocked by some have been invaluable in improving our ability to be at sea for long periods of time. There will be a day when the flag of Sweden is planted on soil no other European has ever reached.” Once again the charm of King Karl had entranced his audience who were all quick to agree how great a man he was and how ably he ruled the nation.

jxi5.jpg
mlp8.jpg

While everyone enjoyed the party though the forces of the King went to make sure that a certain Frederick von Ulrick was escorted safely back to his homeland. In fact they saw him right to Skane and while their decided that such a territory really would be better off as a Swedish holding. Sweden’s ally in Burgundy seemed to agree and in the spring of 1466 war between Sweden and Denmark began. With Swedish ships positioned to block off reinforcements they were able to swiftly overrun the positions of the Danish and take Skane and Halland for Sweden. A deadly blow to Denmark and a sign of a change in the North. Lands that should have always been part of Sweden were once again part of the nation. The words of Frederick had been most prophetic. In standing up against Denmark other nations had done the same leading to another two wars for Denmark when they surrendered lands to Sweden.

It is going to be a while before I can Colonize North America though. Even from Iceland I am going to have to hit Diplomacy tech 7 to have the reach necessary.

Denmark was still suffering from invasions from the Hansa while Sweden once again settled down to build and prosper in peace. Norway wasn’t the happiest about the invasion into Denmark because of a royal marriage to the smaller nation but the hard work of Erik Eka in their courts would turn them back around. The opinions of the Norwegians was the farthest thing from the minds of the people of Sweden as the King announced the birth of a son and heir. King Karl and Queen Helga were now the proud parents to Gustav Adolf von Wittlesbach. Additionally the nation found itself as the Papal Controller managing to gain two cardinals into the Curia. Things were looking up for Sweden indeed. The 1470s were looking to be a good year for Sweden.

25v0.jpg

“Wilhelm? Wilhelm? Where is that man…?” King Karl had been looking for his most favored administrator. However instead a younger man with carefully slicked back hair approached him.

“Forgive me sire but my father is bedridden. Age you see. I am Heinrich, sent by him to serve you if you will have me.” The man then bowed before the King, in fact if he bowed any farther he would probably have dusted the floor.

“Hmm…well your father was a most able man. Prove yourself to me Heinrich.” The King turned and sat down, crossing one leg over the other and waiting to be impressed. Heinrich merely smiled softly and nodded.

“But of course your Highness. First news about the realm. The merchants of Skane have introduced a brilliant idea. A letter of credit. With them a bank or other institution assures payment to another person so long as the conditions of the letter of credit are met. Important for trade between nations to be sure.”

“Good good. What else?” King Karl asked with a small smile.

“News of Denmark would be next. The Hansa have succeeded in their invasion reclaiming not only the lands they lost to them earlier but taking the provinces of Fyn and Lolland as well from Denmark. This makes the capitol of Denmark trapped between our lands and the lands of the Hansa now. They remain very vulnerable.”

a927.jpg

“Most fascinating. Tell me of the world though beyond them. I am curious what our fellow Christians are doing in distant lands.” Karl said trying to push for more and more information from the young man to test him.

“I can tell you that the Portuguese have lost their foothold in Africa. That the Holy See has expanded in Italy. The Byzantine Empire is nearly destroyed by the Ottoman Empire. Norway is finally willing to once more band together in an alliance with you. Poland struggles as the Ukraine has split away from them. Mainland Europe is not a safe territory. Why even now Denmark still struggles while locked in a war on the side of Novgorod with Lithuania.”

“Really now? An interesting development. If one perchance attacked Novgorod you could then find yourself at war with Denmark…meaning even though there is a truce one could perhaps find excuse to take more of their lands?”

“Conceivably sire.”

“Send Erik Eka to Kexholm right away. Let us see what he can stir up.”

“It shall be done your Highness.”

With that a claim was fabricated then soon enough there was reason to dispatch Swedish soldiers east into the lands of Novgorod. Furthermore with Muscovy taking a hardline stance against Sweden now there was no reason to maintain royal ties with them. Due to controlling the curia there was no reason anymore to let things stay that way. The Rurikovich princess was sent home. In fact the King was giving serious thoughts to destroying the marriage with Norway as well. Eventually the marriage with them was destroyed as well. Norway had made itself an obstacle to Sweden and would be taught the error of its ways. All this politicking only showed how important diplomats would be in the future. With the proper funding an Embassy to manage such things could be built. The war ultimately ended with Finland released as its own nation. King Karl had plans for them.

buil.jpg

The years of war had meant that now he could once again focus on other threats. Hansa was made an ally of convenience. Perfectly placed to help Sweden claim more of Denmark’s lands. It would also be the first chance to test out Sweden’s newest weapon. Canons. So in 1476 war once again broke out between Denmark and Sweden. Even with Muscovy coming to their add Burgundy and the Hansa provided more than enough power to roll over the Denmark soldiers and in one large battle take out the larger part of Muscovy’s armies. Bleking and Gotland were Swedish now.

iq97.jpg
mq9s.jpg

King Karl, now at 38 years of age, relaxed comfortably in one of the great sitting rooms in Stockholm. All the lands that had been part of Sweden but were held by Denmark had been reclaimed. The military had new weapons which had proven a powerful equalizer against Muscovy. Relations with Norway had improved as well. Things could be peaceful for a time at least. It was then that young Heinrich entered, the man had been trying to a moustache. Such a thing seemed against God’s plan given his success or lack thereof so far.

“Your Majesty! Oh Sire I have news most joyous for you.”

“Oh and what is that Heinrich? And you must shave that moustache off I am told you scare the maids.”

“Worry not about such trifles. I have great most joyous news. Knowing your great desire for the expansion across the ocean we have dispatched a fleet lead by the famed Magnus Palmstruch. Carrying 5000 of our soldiers they are going to land in what we have called Taqamuk. Not only that but a force of people from Stockholm go with them to settle the land. By the end of this year, 1480, you will have a Colony across the ocean.”

This got Karl’s attention as he stood up. “How? I had always thought that the distance was too great to move numerous people so far?”

“We have figured out the logistics of it. Furthermore I was able to once again sucure the use of Norwegian ports.”

qzt6.jpg

“Ahh this is wonderful news. I am torn…do we celebrate it now or wait for news of the success of the colony? We shall be patient I thin. I have waited 20 years for this I can wait a couple more.” If Karl smiled any wider his head was in danger of falling off. It was at this point that Heinrich moved in closer, his voice lowered as if sharing some great secret.

“Another idea sire…I think I know a solution to the Norway matter. Remarry with them. Claim their throne. Repeated losses in wars with us have made them weak. A marriage now and one war later and we can bind them to Sweden forever.”

“Ahh yes…yes that is a good idea Heinrich. Make it so. The army has been making great strides I am sure they can achieve yet another thing for their nation. Tell me though…what of Burgundy? They will not be pleased about the matter.”

dn6m.jpg

“They are very distant sire. While they may choose to distance themselves from you should you take this course their anger will not be backed with steel. It is a good course.”

The next few years would be interesting for Sweden. Norway decided for some insane reason to attack England. The Papacy once again was in control of itself. Sweden was changing its fleet from the galleys to light ships to help control trade in the Baltic Sea and Lubeck.

Waiting for 1484 gave King Karl about a year to prepare for the eventual plan against Norway. As such those who were interested in what the Swedish Military was doing could see a marked increase in how regular their training was. They of course assumed for the most part it was preparation to invading Denmark once again. Or perhaps there was something going on at that mysterious land to the far west as more people were making the trip that way. Either way no one suspected that the plan was a union with Norway.

39ut.jpg
qqoj.jpg

The practice soon developed what the military called Swedish Steel. The principal that it wasn’t a single soldier fighting alone that won battles but working as a single disciplined unit that would achieve victory in battles to come. The ancient Roman Legions knew this but the ancient Viking heritage of the Swedish people had not been fans.

hpxl.jpg

The start of 1484 saw the end of the alliance with Norway followed by an invasion in the summer after a claim on the throne was made. The invasion was well timed as they were already locked in a war with England. After several losses England forced them to return a Swedish province to its rightful holders weakening Norway while strengthening Sweden. King Karl swore he would one day find a way to repay the favor owed to England and the Lancaster family. Just as well since Burgundy was suffering through a massive peasant rebellion.

f1nw.jpg
3mgk.jpg

With the Hansa devastating the forces of Denmark King Karl could personally lead his soldiers against the forces of Norway such as they were. Also as Denmark continued to suffer defeats he was able to let them peacefully leave the war leaving just his side and against a lone Norway. Thanks to their prior war with England they had little in the way of a military to stand up against the superior Swedish forces. The winter of 1488 saw the King of Norway give up his crown to his cousin. The von Wittlesbach would still rule in Norway just a different one. The union brought new ideas to the nation as well in ways to improve not only fishing methods but things such as mining and farming.

“Your Majesty, once again congratulations in your triumphs on the battlefield. Norway follows your rule.” Heinrich said with another floor scraping bow. King Karl was greying now, his face showing the lines of age at of 47.

“Heinrich, loyal Heinrich. You were right to suggest the attack on Norway. They are a bit cross now but soon they will be happy to be bound tightly to us. As for you…I have decided to make you a Duke for your services. You will continue to serve me well I hope Duke Heinrich Posel. A good name.” He smiled and lifted a hand to the great beard the old King had grown in his age.

“Too kind sire, you have my loyalty now and forever.” He said, his head lowered, a hand over his heart.

“Service earns its due rewards Heinrich. How are things with the colony?”

“Well…before the war started I dispatched a boat to inform them that we would be cut off for a time. I do not think however that there will be any problem. They said they were well stocked and prepared for the winters to come.”

“Excellent. We need the Norwegian ports open to us again to get access across the ocean. At least the war gave us some good practice in how to deal with enemy fortifications. When we try this with Denmark we will take them down all the swifter.”

a6yv.jpg

“Denmark as well Sire?”

“Of course! You had a good idea in how to deal with Norway. The same idea should work just the same with Denmark honestly. We have already started to unify Church functions across Norway and Sweden. We can do the same with them once they are part
of Sweden.”

“Most cunning Sire. I saw that Eka had been sent to Burgundy. I assume to make sure they still remain our allies?”

“Quite so. Furthermore I have a list I want you to review. Men I think would make able administrators for our overseas domains. Proper management produces proper results don’t you agree?”

“Most definitely your Majesty.”

j6ad.jpg

“Anything else in the world I should know about?”

“Burgundy is at war with France. They along with England, Castile, Portugal and Naples are all attacking the French King. I think they fear that left alone the power of the French throne will dominate the region.”

“Not worried about us? Typical of them. Didn’t even ask for our aid. No matter. Go attend your lands in Skane. You deserve a small break before you return to aid me.”

“Yes Sire, and again…thank you.”

The next few years were peaceful. The Norwegian ports opened up and more Swedish soldiers and settlers went west to the cold lands of what was being called the New World. The promise of free land was a great temptation to those looking for a chance to become landholders and not just serfs. Even the people of the Finland region of Sweden were supporting the crown more as well.

4awp.jpg
8xck.jpg

1493 also saw the King leave for one last war. The nobles in Stockholm had been clamoring for an invasion of Denmark and while it wasn’t exactly the plan that King Karl had in mind an invasion of Sjaelland was launched once again using the Hansa for support to invade into their lands. The invasion was heavily in Norway’s favor especially with the increased use of firearms mixed in amongst the pike that made up the bulk of Sweden’s forces.

h6wn.jpg

The war was a rather tame affair compared with the battles waging in France. Only the aid of Lithuania made the whole thing take longer than it needed but even they didn’t bring many soldiers to the conflict. Another prime piece of territory gained for Sweden.

s1ba.jpg

King Karl was now 55 years of age. His tomb was being prepared for at such an advanced age not many expected more years from the one that the people of Sweden had started to call Karl the Blessed for his accomplishments. Gustav, his son, was taking over more duties for the throne and served in the military as well just as his father had though being the heir he did not lead from the front. Instead he oversaw the increased improvements in the army. Furthermore the great docks across the nation were continuing to be improved due to increased trade now in the region demanding superior facilities to handle the increased load.

1497 sees the alliance with Bohemia come to an end. Shortly after the royal families of Sweden and Denmark are bound through marriage. Denmark is weak enough though that a war to make them part of Sweden may not be necessary. Instead time is spent building up the bond between the two nations in hopes that peaceful means can be used to turn them into a vassal of Sweden. Also using peaceful means allows the bonds with Burgundy to remain strong.

7etf.jpg

To the distant south the Ottoman Empire finished destroying the venerable Byzantine Empire. With Byzantium gone, Constantinople renamed to Istanbul, and the conquest of the Greeks complete there has been a great migration of the people of that land seeking safer lands away from the threat of Muslim oppression and aggression. King Karl welcomes those who wish to make a new home in his lands. The influx of them leads to a surge in the use of the scythe by the farmers in lands Sweden holds dominion over.

97dj.jpg
fu7x.jpg

Without needing the Hansa as a weapon to wield against Denmark the alliance is broken off with them next. It was important to eventually retake those lands they had taken from Denmark one day since they would have to be brought into the Swedish dominion. If they can produce a claim to justify a war with them an invasion could then be launched as soon as they are in a conflict with the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. These things would happen faster if people didn’t get so upset about comets. Especially if certain King’s don’t have heart attacks from them.

pd72.jpg

“I think for my portrait I want the background to be the new world. Show Manhattan in the background.” Gustav Adolf von Wittlesbach was musing, stroking his thin small blond beard. Though it took him forever to grow any his small beard was surely his pride and he always seemed to stroke it.

“The colony there is turning into quite the settlement true sire.” Heinrich Posen was of course at hand to assist the new monarch.

“Heinrich…were you in a fight?”

“A fight sire?”

“Yes…your eye. It looks quite puffy and now that I look closer I dare say that certainly looks like a bruise forming.”

“Ahh…not as such sire. Princess Ulrika is just very…expressive with her hands when she wants something.” The young princess was quite the known terror around the castle ever since her father had approved having her get a martial education.

tewm.jpg

“Tsk, you need to learn how to duck. It is suiting don’t you think? The start of a new century and as such a new King on the throne. That comet truly was an omen.”

“Most suiting. I have good and bad news. First the good. There is legal pretext to invade the Hansa. The bad news is that they are at peace.”

“Well I think that it is important we expand our territory. Options?”

“Well there appears to be a nation of primitive people in the new world. It has taken some time but we have overcome the barrier of language between us and them. They are called the Huron. Our weapons seem to terrify them. We could expand there?”

“Ahh! Do it. Send some priests as well. I imagine unknown continents have never heard of our peaceful Lord God.”

“We might be able to invade the Hansa soon though. Oddly enough Hungary has become the Holy Roman Empire. Shall I see about earning their favor?”

z6tm.jpg

“Of course!” The King moved to look out a window, watching the courtyard where it appeared Ulrika was beating up a young page. Took after her mother surely. “Do you think…I should have been more firm with her? She is a bit wild…”

“Your daughter is one of the most brilliant military minds to be born in Europe. Only the freedom you gave her has led to her finding this talent she possessed. Only 14 and she is already making contributions to the nation.” Heinrich was quick to assure the King of.

mis9.jpg

“Very well. I leave things in her hands and yours. Don’t be afraid to be firm with her. Discipline! You have those plans I know my father was unwilling to follow through on. You have my permission to implement them while I am overseas. I want to personally see Manhattan and these so called Huron.”

e3xa.jpg
odxd.jpg

“Of course Sire, we will pray for a swift and safe return.”

Moving soldiers overseas wasn’t a quick process but the Huron soon would see the march of Swedish boots across their lands bringing them the gifts of Swedish civilization. Ludwig Gadh who had been exploring the inlands around the colonies lead the invasion against the Huron. The plan was to turn the entire nation into a vassal so that in time they could be integrated into Sweden properly. Things kept changing in the Holy Roman Empire though as a new Emperor rose to the throne. The Huron were turned into a vassal of Sweden by the end of 1504.

65z3.jpg
6uay.jpg

Exploration following the conquest of the Huron lead to new discoveries of massive freshwater lakes and a great waterfall. Two other native peoples were also discovered organized into the Shawnee and Creek nations. Furthermore at the pushing of a growing colonial industry a colony was aimed far south of the growing lands around Manhattan. Called the Caribbean region the area seemed rich for development.

920t.jpg

Back in Europe Denmark had launched an attack against the Hansa in hopes of reclaiming their lands. This was of course something that Sweden wanted to support. Since Denmark did not seem willing to ask for Swedish support the King personally launched his own war against the Hansa and called his allies in Norway and Burgundy into the battle. While his daughter was impressive with a sword her father was no slouch commanding soldiers as well.

d08l.jpg
slha.jpg

The war went well. Superior sea power devastated and cut off the reinforcements from the mainland letting them safely conquer the islands that had once been part of Denmark. The improvement to the military also happened in the middle of the war leading to a short period where the forces of King Gustav were held in reserve while they were reorganized and armed. Yet the Emperor of Cologne gave up the lands seeing more fall into the hands of Sweden. The lands were not returned but instead kept in Swedish hands. With Denmark still suffering the invasion by the Hansa returning lands to them could easily lead to the Hansa regaining them shortly thereafter. Even after the war was over the lands were kept. One of the main problems keeping Denmark from accepting position as a vassal to King Gustav was a matter of economic power. More land would ensure that Sweden could convince them to follow them.

ueh2.jpg
mhyj.jpg

Across the ocean though the explorer Patrik Toll was exploring the warm waters around the Swedish colony of Havana discovering numerous new nations throughout the region. A group called the Maya and Aztecs. The land was now known to dwarf Europe itself and all of it seemed so far completely in the hands of one nation to master, Sweden. Though some nations have developed the means to make the journey none yet have aside from Sweden. It had been 50 years since Knut Sandels had discovered the new world and so much remain unknown to Europe about it. If the other nations would ignore it longer Sweden would surely dominate it before they ever made land there.

“Heinrich, I am confused.”

“Oh?”

“Why haven’t those in Portugal or Castile moved towards the new world? I know that the southern part of that massive land is not so far from Africa.”

“Ahh well to explain a little of the situation Sire I too have wondered it and made investigations into the matter. First the Portugese are currently the lesser partner in a personal union with Castile. Second they have followed on our heels and sailed north then west in the paths we took to find the new world. As such it is far out of their reach. As for Castile I happen to know that they have discovered the land nearest to Africa but as yet they make no move. It may have something to do with their inability to defeat Grenada or the Portuguese losing Ceuta. Behold this so called map of the new world according to so called Spanish Explorers.”

0um1.jpg

“Hmm…they have barely discovered any of it at all. They have no idea we are there do we.”

“Aside from the bragging our diplomats do no.”

“What else is going on?”

“Scotland has been absorbed by England though Wales has won her independence. Poland is now the leader of a personal union with Austria. Bohemia leads a union with Brunswick. Aragon rules Sicily and parts of Naples. The Papal States have brought more of the region around them under their rule. Venice has been suffering defeats. The Ottomans are expanding west. Also no one respects our military.”

e77l.jpg

“What!? Why not? Did we not just make the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire bend knee and surrender to us? Have we not conquered nations across the ocean?”

“Well yes and yes…but those nations were rather primitive and Cologne is no Austria.”

“Well bugger.”

“Also the people think that they should have more representation.”

“I don’t understand.”

“They want a say in how the nation is run.”

“What the nobles are?”

“No…the common folk.”

uokr.jpg

“Well ultimate power remains with me and the nobles right?”

“Yes sire.”

“Then sure let them have their beloved representation.”

“Speaking of representing…Burgundy would like our troops to represent our nation and show up to help them defend their lands. They are on the losing end of a war with France already and another nation has taken action to attack them.”

“Send word we shall aid them! They are our ally after all we must protect our friends. I will leave with the soldiers!”

a4dn.jpg

So in the early months of 1510 the Swedish military went to war against Gelre, Hesse and Oldenburg. However first ships would have to return from the new world to carry soldiers to the battle. Shipwrites also had developed new designs for heavy warships and light trade ships but the country could not afford to upgrade the fleet in the middle of the war it was involved in.

ftga.jpg

The war was short and it wasn’t long before the invaders went for peace with Burgundy. Sweden barely had time to get involved before they were done and going back to their homes. A dull war for Sweden as there mere presence seemed to be enough to sway the tide of the war. The experience of trying to move supplies across such a distance and manage them in distant lands was very educational to the Swedish military who instituted reforms to ensure they would always have the soldiers and supplies they needed.

2ffk.jpg
05at.jpg

“Well that was entirely unsatisfying. Burgundy may not be the nation we need in Europe. Not like France…hmmm.”

“Sire we have decades of friendship with Burgundy. Is it wise to give that up?”

“Hmm…perhaps not. What about the new ships? Are they working well?”

“Quite an improvement though a few heavy warships wouldn’t hurt either if we could. A strong fleet will ensure if we have to go to war we can dominate the coasts as well as trade.”

The discussion was interrupted by a heavy fit of coughing from the King. Gustav had been in ill health a year after a return from Burgundy. He had started to give more power to the nobles close to him like Heinrich, the Princess Ulrika, The High Baron of Gotland, and a few others. His humor wasn’t much improved by news of religious turmoil coming from central Europe either as the King was a staunch Catholic.

k653.jpg
i4jr.jpg

“My my…I do think…that this is quite a lot of blood on my handkerchief. You know Heinrich…I think it is best you get me my doctor.”

The doctor prescribed leeches. The King was dead by the end of the week. The doctor the day after as Queen Ulrika rose to the throne of Sweden on the 29th of May in 1514. 26 years of age she was a tall woman who could look down on most men and those she couldn’t look down on she could knock down if they tried getting too high in presence. She was also a beauty. Raven haired and fair skinned she was called the most beautiful Queen in the north. There were only two things that could be seen as flaws for the Queen. First was she was still childless. Men perhaps had trouble performing in her presence. The second was she hated the day to day affairs of running things. One could more often find her in the war room or out hunting than holding court.

3f93.jpg

“Please your Highness, there are important things which we need your input on.” Heinrich begged the Queen. It was hard to keep up with her as she was taller than he was and out hunting. Some preferred to hunt on horse. She took a massive boar spear and went to chase things down on foot.

“What is it? Can’t you see I am trying to relax and get away from all those infuriating vapid men at court?”

“The Huron question needs dealt with.”

“Bah! Just integrate them into the nation.”

“That…that will take decades.”

“I have spoken Heinrich.”

“Ahh….yes of course.”

“Anything more?”

“There is a chance if your distant cousin Christian dies in Denmark we will end up in a succession war.”

“Hah! Good. We could use more lands. Who will we be fighting?”

“Bavaria your Grace.”

“Interesting. I look forward to the battle. What of the new world situation? Aside from the Huron.”

“Well…the major island we have dubbed Sweden-Cuba, name still under review, is slowly being colonized as well as the lands around the major colony of Manhattan. There remains no sign of the other nations moving into the new world yet.”

“And we have taken the lessons of living off the land that the Huron hunters use and included it into the nation’s military guides?”

jify.jpg

“Of course your majesty. Furthermore as per your instructions more cannons were built in Europe should we need to make our presence known in war again.”

“Good good.”

“We really should talk about you getting married.”

“Bah! Fine. That one with the scar. What was his name?”

“Halvard? Why him if I can ask your Highness?”

“He knows how to throw an axe. I like him.”

And that was enough for the Queen it seemed and within two years she had a new child and heir to the throne named after her father.

Castile was also finally moving into the new world and had established themselves in the southern part of the continent. Denmark was again getting violent against the Holy Roman Empire by invading the Hansa and calling on Sweden for aid. Keeping Denmark weak would be better in the long run but the Queen had no time for that instead rushing out to join them. She wasn’t a woman of patience but loved battle and warfare. Just as well it was a land war as Sweden was in the process of improving the transport ships for carrying soldiers and couldn’t get involved in a major overseas war at this point.

ud93.jpg
emvh.jpg

The war wasn’t a serious one. The Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, King Wikbold of Cologne, was not the most powerful of people to hold the throne and in fact it was the Livonian Order who were the leader of the defending forces. A poor day for the Empire. Sweden of course continued to wax strong with new developments. The Conventicle Act was passed which would only serve to make the nation stronger through a more effective clergy. Reforms were put through both the navy and army. Weapons improved and tactics sharpened thanks to her abilities. The war got Stade as an additional piece of land for Denmark and the Queen started to turn her eye to conquest of her nearby neighbor.

It wasn’t Denmark she set her eyes on. Not yet at least. Instead she looked east to the Livonian Order. There were territories that would serve the nation well if only they were part of Sweden. Burgundy was once again at war with France and a comet sighting seemed to indicate that things would go very poorly for Sweden’s ally in Europe. Burgundy continued to not call on their northern ally into their war though which was a mixed blessing. The Queen was sure that Swedish forces could turn the tide but it kept the people of Sweden at peace not getting involved.

tvcb.jpg

An older Heinrich entered the trophy room of the Queen. Heads of animals she had personally hunted and slain across the walls and floors. “Your majesty, we have news from the colon…” His words trailing off as he saw the Queen, heavy winter boots propped up on a priceless antique table of the family. Quickly he gathered his wits about him to continue. “News has reached us of the Portugease ships discovering our territories in the new world.”

“And…they trying to start something?”

“No your majesty.”

“Anything else interesting?” Queen Ulrika of course meant warfare. She hated being inactive but the only real nearby power they could try to compete with was Muscovy and she didn’t want that battle quite yet.

“Castile has joined Burgundy against France. The battle is more even now.”

“Oh? Hmm…perhaps staying friends with Burgundy will remain worthwhile for now.”

“The people are not happy about you throwing Bishop Hans out the window.”

“He should watch his tone besides the man was clearly in the wrong. Ships are how the great trades of the future will be done.”

ue5j.jpg
6jpw.jpg

“Still…the people are restless about matters religious what with the Church problems south of us. However the men your father put in charge overseas are proving most excellent administrators.”

amfh.jpg

“Also…Denmark has thrown off the authority of the royal line and has become a republic…” This was the hardest part for Heinrich. He was pretty sure he knew exactly what the Queen would think of the event.

“Is that so. Denmark’s people have kicked out my kin have they? So no one would be upset if we invaded then. Hmm….Heinrich I want an excuse to go to war with them by the end of the year.” Ulrika seemed positively giddy at the prospect of a war with them.

“I assume you want Gustav Baner in charge of the army?”

“Well…I will be in charge of course. However I know how the nobility get so upset when I am the one wandering around with the sword. At least this way they can pretend I am not getting involved in things. I believe he has been talking about some new guns for the army. Tell Bengt Stenbok to open up the treasury to him.” Bengt was the treasurer of Sweden and in theory controlled the pursestrings. He would not be pleased about the new expenses.

rdaj.jpg

So it was that the alliance with Denmark was dissolved and a new alliance with the powerful nation of Poland picked up instead. Queen Ulrika even sent her youngest brother to them to marry a cousin to King Wladylsaw Jagiellon the Fifth’s own cousin. With the diplomatic map of the region redrawn word was sent to Prince Valdemar Thomson who ruled the Noble Republic of Denmark. They were at war with Sweden for Holstein. 1526 saw once again the people of northern Europe at each other’s throats. Lithuania, Brandenburg and Genoa came to fight for Denmark but the royal bonds with Poland brought not only their armies but the forces of Austria as well into the battle. Norway of course also joined the side of Sweden through their union.
Denmark and Sweden clashed while in the east Poland was having great difficulty against Lithuania. Even with Austria’s soldiers the eastern nation was suffering terrible losses on the battlefield. They would eventually sign a white peace with Lithuania but by then the whole of Denmark was in Swedish hands. The Reformation as it was becoming known was making more trouble with new schools of thought forming which meant the Pope needed to take more action.

p7eg.jpg

The war however was having its effect on Swedish lands even without enemy soldiers landing on it. A loss of nobles in the fighting in Denmark had bolstered the power of the throne. Furthermore the nation was seeing a large growth of administrators thanks to overseas matters leading to increased internal revenues.

vcze.jpg
cdqw.jpg

The war was dragging. Not because it was hard for Sweden to fight but due to the difficulty in actually meeting up with the enemy. They could not really reach Swedish lands and Queen Ulrika in turn could not bring her forces to bear against Lithuania. However with the whole of Denmark held things were slowly going to her favor. As the years dragged Lithuania started to ask for peace even saying that they would accept they lost the war. However Queen Ulrika refused each demand. She wanted land and she would have it. Yet finally in 1534 the war was won.

xahj.jpg

“Congratulations your Majesty. Sweden has grown once again. There is a small problem.”

“What could it be Heinrich? We have taken the rich lands of Holstein from the nation of Denmark. We have made Lithuania end their treaty with them. Another war with them and we can turn them into a vassal in a few more years. Things are continuing to come up in our favor.”

“Holstein…is part of the Holy Roman Empire. The Emperor wants it back.”

xziw.jpg

“Well too bad the land is ours. If Cologne wants it he can fight me for it.” Queen Ulrika would have loved another fight. While fighting against Denmark her allies in Poland had drawn her into another war which let her tangle with Muscovy and come out on top though gaining nothing aside from a few more heads for the trophy room for the trouble.

“Of course your Highness. Interesting news the Portuguese have finally started to expand into the new world into some of the islands near to our territories in the Carribean.”

“And Spain?”

“Still on the southern part of the main continent.”

“Excellent. I think I will go hunting again. Victory needs to be followed up with victory.”

“Of course Highness. Be safe.”

1535 sees a new monarch on the throne of Sweden. 19 years of age with a 5 year old heir named Erik. A good time to size up the situation in Europe. Amazingly Wales still is standing strong in the face of England and has even expanded onto the mainland with part of Brittany under their rule. France currently is suffering through religious turmoil with Protestants taking over parts of their territory and fighting the French army. Burgundy remains strong enough as well between France and the Holy Roman Empire. Austria remains under a union with Poland with the other major powers of the Holy Roman Empire being Bavaria, Bohemia, Savoy, Brunswick and Brandenburg.

In North Africa Portugal has never reclaimed their lands there. Nor has Castile expanded there leaving the region of Morocco, Algiers and Tripoli all powerful and stable. The Ottomans and Hungary have conquered all the territory between them. Lithuania is powerful farther east as they press against Muscovy. Aragon and Naples fight in the southern Italy region. Sweden of course remains powerful in the north. Overseas Sweden leads the expansion into the new world with Portugal and Castile getting into it as well. The southern main continent seeing Castile colonies while a few small islands in the Caribbean sees Portugal and Sweden building colonies. Ulrik af Gennas is leading an internal exploration of the new continent.

scae.jpg

“You, woman. Where is Heinrich? He should be here should he not to work with his new King?” Gustav was a young man with dark hair completely clean shaven. Not that he couldn’t grow them but the man preferred the other look. The woman he addressed was obviously some noblewoman from her fine clothes and the gold around her neck.

“Dead I am afraid sire. I am his daughter Andrea Posen.” She said firmly. It was important to establish yourself with the ruling family with the first meeting. Her blue eyes met his as she waited for him to get over his surprise.

“Ahh…I see. My condolences. I remember your father well as I was growing up. My mother and grandfather both respected him greatly. He was a good man.”

“Thank you your Highness, I am sure father will be pleased watching us from Heaven.”

“However…with your presence here in my chambers I am guessing you hope to take over his position as one of my advisors?”

“Of course sire. I am sure you can admit that after seeing your mother’s talents there is no reason to think that I can’t do the job.”

“You misunderstand me Miss Posen. Your family has worked with us for several generations now. Yet the position is not hereditary. You must prove your worth.”

“Of course Your Highness. First allow me to show you new wharf designs that can increase trade as well as new facilities that could be useful in increasing production of specific goods. Expensive but worth it I promise you.”

hh38.jpg

“Furthermore we have new military plans. We will be organizing our soldiers in the Spanish Square style as it is known. Often the weakness of military comes in with their firing. This will give our soldiers a key edge in that field.” She says handing over several documents he started to examine.

z9zr.jpg

“These look expensive.”

“Quality is sire.”

“Hmm…what else?”

“We have also determined that the lands to the far west are larger than Europe easily. Our explorers are in the deep heartland and most of the northern land is only inhabited by disorganized groups instead of major nations like the Huron.”

“Interesting…speaking of major nations I have some plans I am going to entrust to you to implement. Make the matter of expanding the government infrastructure of Sweden that much easier.”

bf7l.jpg

“Of course Sire.” Andrea Posen said with a low bow.

“What about Denmark? My mother wanted to conquer them but isn’t there some other way?”

“Your mother was right Sire. War is the only way. Denmark has but a single ally in Munster. A swift crushing invasion and they will be yours finally.”

“Hmm…I don’t like it but such is as it is. See about getting a good excuse to invade would you Miss Posen?”

“Right away Your Highness.” With another bow the sharp blue eyed woman departed to leave the King alone to ponder his pose for his royal portrait. His grandfather had gone with a background of Manhattan. His mother standing astride a bear she had strangled to death with her bare hands. In 1539 Denmark once again felt the invasion of Swedish soldiers. Their goal simple. Make the nation a vassal. Within two years they were a vassal to Sweden leaving the only danger at the border Muscovy to the east.

c2bt.jpg

“Ahh Miss Posen, come and join me.” King Gustav was looking very not Kingly, what with being rather very naked and relaxing comfortably in a hot spring. The affairs of state were heavy things and managing two vassals, an overseas empire, and a personal union on top of normal things made the King’s winter retreat all the more pleasant for him.

“Ahh…you will forgive me if I pass Sire? I recall well your ahem…reputation and I fear I could not help myself.” The King had been a father somehow at 14 years of age. He also had a few mistresses now that he was of age and always had an eye for beauty.

“Fine fine…so what does bring you out then?”

“News from Stockholm. The bank is established.”

07m0.jpg

“The veterans of your mother’s wars wish to know your views on their display.” She said turning through some papers and studiously not looking at him.

“Ahh yes…tell them I cannot turn my back on traditions and they have my support.’

6kc9.jpg

“Ulrik af Gennas has also discovered the western shore of the new world. Another ocean perhaps with new lands across on the other side. However reaching ships to such a land is beyond us…for now.”

“Really? Most interesting. Continue to fund explorations in the area I want them to verify no land routes west before we see about moving that way ourselves.”

wccl.jpg

“Very well. Norway is also starting to be integrated into the nation. We expect within a decade they will be part of Sweden completely along with the Huron overseas. At which time we plan to begin to incorporate Denmark into the nation as well.”

“Good good. Now Miss Posen.”

“Mrs. Posen.”

“Oh? Congratulations. Well Mrs. Posen what of the Reformation? I have heard troubling news in England.”

“England has converted it is true sire. As has France, Bohemia, Brandenburg, Wurttemburg, the Palantine, Gelre, Brunswick, Luneburg and Saxony.”

“So many…how troublesome. What of the overseas colonies?”

“We have been focused a great deal in the Caribbean in hopes of boxing out the expansion of Portugal and Castile. If we can hold the coasts they can’t move north and inwards. Things are going well and the lands there are very rich. The Lesser Antiles will be left to them while we take everything west of it.”

bfl7.jpg

“Interesting. The Embassy is under construction yes?” He had personally designed the large sprawling building to help manage the growing Swedish realm and handle foreign dignitaries.

“Yes Sire. Should be done by the end of next year.”

“Good then take the night off Mrs. Posen.”

“Of course Sire. Do not fall asleep in the hot springs Sire.”

With that Sweden would enter a period of peace and internal growth. The improvements with the banks had led to a new way to handle debts should the nation find itself in the red. Furthermore a new scheme would limit what could be shipped into Sweden from foreign markets. This meant that the nation could be served far better by building within Sweden rather than outside and then importing. While Gustav might have not been the most charming of rulers Sweden had known he knew how to manage its sprawling territory.

a9q9.jpg
iigb.jpg

Not everyone in the Kingdom was happy with things. The peasants felt that too much was being taxed from them leading to certain bribes and redistribution of coin to be done to keep them all happy. Not long after Burgundy finally called on their ally in Sweden when the Netherlands tried to break away and rule themselves independently.

3ckm.jpg
m43t.jpg

While the Netherlands was able to put an impressive amount of sea power out there their land forces were quickly overwhelmed. The new cannons that the Swedish Army was using may have had something to do with the situation. While Swedish and Burgundy blades put down the rebellion the native peoples of the Huron across the ocean finally let were properly brought into the nation of Sweden expanding her rule and bringing in more wealth thanks to the fur trade. They were not the only nation to absorb a lesser partner as Portugal had been absorbed by Castile giving them not only more rule over the Iberia Peninsula but also the colonies.

1551 saw the war over whether the Netherlands would be free continue though their defeat was only a matter of time. Sweden under the rule of King Gustav was preparing for further expansion in the New World as well as moving against the Livonian Order to the east. The Cherokee nation would be the next to be brought in as a vassal nation to the growing Sweden. It was during this period that new infrastructure developments were completed and began to see use across the nation.

mlif.jpg

In addition a new grand palace was being built overseas as a sign of the superiority of Swedish rule. Though the time of castles as defensive places was passing a palace was still a grand structure worthy of showing off the might of a nation. Furthermore the victory over the Cherokee brought the nation into a war with the Creek nation which would be a perfect chance to take out two birds with but a single stone. The entire Creek nation would be annexed in turn with some parts kept under direct rule by Sweden and others given to the Cherokee to manage until such a time as the Cherokee were incorporated into the nation.

vfjx.jpg
620g.jpg

2 years later saw Norway incorporated as well bringing in much more control over the northern trade and shipping. Their armies and navies were improved with new weapons and fighting techniques and incorporated into the main Swedish forces. These successes also meant that Sweden could seek more allies now that they were not managing so many minor nations as vassals. While some religious issues remained due to conflicts with certain important figures in the clergy with the successes in converting the people of the old Huron nation into Catholics it was seen worthwhile to defend the ministers rather than bow to the pressures of the Pope.

2p43.jpg
hdnj.jpg

“Mrs. Andrea I just wanted to make sure that everything is going as I have instructed?”

“Quite so sire. Lithuania has become our ally. They will serve well as a natural ally against the dangers of Muscovy.”

“Good good. I hear that King Jogaila has quite the daughter. Have they agreed as well to marry his second child to my son?”

“They have sire. A strong nation within Europe is your friend. This puts Burgundy to the west and Lithuania to the east of the Holy Roman Empire as the allies of Sweden.”

“Perfect!”

“However not everyone in the nation is happy with being Catholic. We are seeing more provinces turn to the other ways to worship Christ.”

“Eh…so long as they don’t make trouble.”

o1tx.jpg

“The aggressive colonization effort of the new world continues well. We try to maintain three to four colonies being built at any one time for maximum dominance. Particular focus is spent along the islands and the coast to keep the people of Castile from expanding anymore west or north.”

“Wonderful to hear Mrs. Posen. I would still like to deal with the Livonian Order though. We are about to go to war. Cancel the festival. The money must be spent bringing that foreign power to heel.”

rmjp.jpg

With the Livonian Order only having Riga as an ally the Swedish Military is easily able to force a landing and begin to conquer their territory. The same time period saw the growth of the bureaucracy to increase the pool of talented figures who might serve the King directly.

n3gg.jpg

The war would ultimately see the three north most provinces of the Livonian Order taken by Sweden. The goal however was not to completely absorb them but setup the smaller nation for a followup invasion to turn them into a vassal then return those lands and incorporate the whole group in another 10 years. New banking systems had produced a more stable nation so this was seen as the best long term direction.

awkv.jpg
4r34.jpg

With the concluded in 1559 the process of annexing Denmark into Sweden began. Castile was also becoming a major power as they were now leading a personal union with Aragon as well. Time would make them rule a united Iberian Peninsula. Furthermore they were starting to show signs of interest in Africa as their colonial expansion into the new world had slowed as interest was turned towards finding a new way east.

“Sire…Sweden is unpopular.” Andrea Posen was attending to the King after holding court in his main palace in Stockholm.

“Oh? Well I am sure that the Livonian Order is not a friend.”

“More than that Sire. They are part of a coalition against us now. Muscovy and Poland are part of it as well.”

“Oh? Hmm…that is a rather strong combination of nations. Suggestions?”

“Yes Sire. We keep quiet for now. Focus overseas.”

“Sounds wise.”

“On the plus side Sire the actions of these nations have inspired certain military producers within the nation to offer us a generous discount on weapons for the army. Save us a little coin in the long run should we need some mercenaries.”

1ng8.jpg

“Good. With Castile having given up on the whole North America issue I am curious where they are going. Find us a talented sailor and explore Africa and South America more.”

“I know just the man Sire. Sven Toll commands the Wasa. I am sure he will be perfect for this assignment.”

“Sven Toll? Hmm…I think I know him. He is based out of our docks in the Caribbean right?”

“That he is. We may need to establish some ports in Africa to make sure we have tracked the Castile directions of expansion.”

“Fine fine. The Gold Coast will make for a good holding.”

“Are you interested in art at all Sire?”

“Art? Of course! We do love our coronation paintings.” Andrea Posen made a note of that.

srxq.jpg

“We also have a minister who has been doing most impressive things. There is a profile on him for you on the desk in your study.”

l3eu.jpg

“Interesting I will check that later. There is one final thing I want to do.”

“Hmm?”

“We need to get out of the way of our merchants I think. Too much state influence in things will limit us. I have a grand plan for a free economy. It is the way of the future.”

djxj.jpg

“I didn’t think you would want to give up that power Sire.”

“Oh, I am trading one set of powers for another. You have the fun of informing the nobility of what is happening with the Privy Council. You will find the documents on your desk in the morning Mrs. Posen.”

sxen.jpg

“Ahh…I see. Well than Sire I had best get a good night’s sleep because I feel it will be a long day tomorrow.”

“Sleep well Mrs. Posen.”

The next years were peaceful enough while Denmark worked to incorporate Denmark into the nation. A royal decree let private interests manage the mining of various well mines in the nation and just worked to focus on taxing their efforts. Sven Toll continued to explore the African coastline looking for signs of Castile expansion. It was during this time that the discovery of a far northern Castile colony in Stadacona was discovered. They had a small post in the far north but the northern parts of the New World would be primarily Swedish. To make sure that the coalition against them would fail if it came to war the famed cavalry drawn from the Finland regions of the nation were enhanced.

86zx.jpg

Yet while they seemed to find a way around the African continent through the south pirate ships in the far south made them turn back. Perhaps the Spanish were busy farther around the South American continent? Well exploration takes time and during that time the nation of Denmark was formally brought into the nation. Any lands that it held which were considered part of the Holy Roman Empire were removed from its jurisdiction as well though it upset the Emperor in Bohemia.

hl4b.jpg

“Sire, welcome back to Stockholm. Did you enjoy touring your new lands?” Andrea Posen was there to welcome the King back.

“Quite so! It is good to see the whole nation unified. How is that little matter I told you I wanted dealt with?”

“Oh! The invasion of the Shawnee people in the New World? We have started it. Our soldiers are doing very well expanding into their lands. We expect news from them very soon.”

z26p.jpg

“Excellent to hear. As soon as we control the lands give them to the Creek to manage and then bring the Creek into my nation properly. And the Dissolution Act has been passed yes?”

“As per your orders once a year parliament gathers to proclaim the greatness of the ruler of Sweden yes. The shipwrights sent over these plans if you wanted to look?”

wckx.jpg

“Huh…not exactly interested in these kinds of ships. We aren’t the Med. Our ships ply the oceans not the calm seas.”

“There are some performers as well in the area looking for a little patronage.”

“How much patronage?”

“Well…half a year at our current income? Though we spend a lot on colonies honestly we could cut back there.”

“Hmm….no no, do it. We can do both. In fact I believe Florence has made an academy for the fine arts. I think we should follow this direction. Empty the treasury and get to it.”

o35l.jpg
6p9c.jpg

“Sire if I could…we could use another ally in Europe.”

“Oh? Any suggestions?”

“Well our best bet is either Hungary or Bohemia. The advantage with Bohemia is that they are the Emperor of Holy Roman Empire. A further edge if we move east to break Muscovy. Also they oppose Poland who opposes us. If we do get involved with Poland they will surely back us.”

“Hmm…very well. See what you can do there.”

“Oh a final piece of news. The Livonian Order left the coalition against us. An invasion now could turn them into our vassal. The Baltic region would be nearly completely held by us with the dominance of them.”

“Excellent. See to that. I think I am going to go enjoy the hot springs again.”

“Of course sire. Be careful the stones can be slippery.”

“You worry too much.”

King Erik took the throne in 1573 and was not quite as impressive as his forebears. Small, slight, with a near criminal inability to grow anything more than the thinnest of moustaches. He could also be beaten up by a weak breeze. However he understood people far better than his father did. He was a careful figure who hated to take chances. The slightest thing to risk his life was avoided. The kitchens always had to make much larger meals due to the 3 food tasters he always had close at hand whenever he drank or had a meal. He also had a pair of bodyguards who worked in 12 hour shifts watching him. Svetlana watched him during the day while Elin watched him at night. It was the a week after his coronation where the matronly Andrea Posen sat down to discuss things with him.

“Mrs. Posen, always a pleasure.”

“Your words honor me Highness.”

“Now how are things though? In Europe. You always seem to know what is going on.”

“Well what is most interesting is how your family has spread. The ruling family in Burgundy is now von Wittlesbach as well. So are the rulers of Aschen, Bavaria, Alsace and the Palantine. Also if the Queen of Castile were to pass on right now due to their marriage to Burgundy one of the von Wittlesbach family would ascend to the throne there.”

“Really? Europe is a most interesting place isn’t it.”

“Quite so sire. This is the current map of the region.”

“Hmm…hmm…what is the situation with the Livonian Order?”

“We have justification to invade. Their allies are minor nations with small lands. We can easily crush them. With that done we can return the lands we took from them earlier to them and work to incorporate the entire nation into our lands.”

“Excellent. This would give us a wider border with Muscovy. They are the biggest threat to us you know.”

“I am aware Sire.”

“They hate us and would see us destroyed.”

“I know Sire. Also they call themselves Russia now.”

“Well whatever they are they have never forgiven when my ancestors broke off the marriage with them. I know they plot against me. Scheming with their…schemy little heads. Give me your opinion about them.”

“Well Sire I think they are a paper tiger. Their army is years behind our own in training and equipment. Their numbers spent fighting with the Horde nations. If we can deal with the Livonian Order quickly striking against them is a viable option.”

King Erik considered her words but she could see he wasn’t convinced. Well he was King it was up to him how Sweden moved. He mused then changed the subject.

“What of our holdings overseas?”

“Well we have established a few ports in Africa including its unclaimed southernmost point. They will be to find other ways to Asia rather than major colonies. Trade from there will not reach us.”

“And what of our western colonies?”

“Going very well. All the peoples in the Huron lands are predominantly Catholic now. The Cherokee now govern the Creek and will soon enough be integrated into our lands. We also continue to expand along the coast trying to keep the Castile colonists from getting any hold in the region and limit their expansion opportunities.”

“You have given me plenty to think on. Thank you Mrs. Posen. We will talk soon.”

“Of course Sire.”

“So it was that in 1573 Swedish soldiers marched against the Livonian Order. With them no longer in the Coalition against the King this was the perfect time to strike. Safe even. With the numbers they could bring to bear against them and the superior weapons and ships it was merely a matter of time before they were overrun. Lithuania who had been an ally did not join the call. In fact the monarchy there was in flux and even those bonds between those nations broke before the war was complete.

Success outside of Sweden had problems within the nation. While the experiences with the New World were bringing in wonderful new idea to improve the nation the King’s beloved son, Karl von Wittlesbach, had passed away with a fever while visiting Les Cayes. The King withdrew for a time and consulted many priests on the matter. He thought this was his punishment for invading a nation that was Catholic and dedicated to the Lord.

With the war completed bonds with Lithuania were restored. Great Britain which had formed after England unified Scotland and Ireland under their rule was expanding as well. They had a colony in South America. Luckily his wife was still fertile and in two years another son was born. The King insisted the boy be named Karl after his passed elder brother. The line of succession was at least secure though the King was in his 40s now. He may not live to see his son become a man. The King swore he would not seek violence against his fellow Christians so long as he lived due to this boon.

With Muscovy remaining as ever the great threat to the east the King funneled great sums into new ships and weapons. He would not seek to fight the other nation but he would never let another nation attack Sweden. They would defend themselves if they must from their fellow Christian and also turn their weapons against the heathen outside the North.

“Your highness, you are looking well. A lie but what else did one say to the King? He was 49 with a three year old son he barely saw. He kept thinking there would be an invasion any day by the coalition against Sweden of Hungary, Poland and Russia.

“Hah…a lie Mrs. Posen but I know you mean well. How are your grandchildren?”

“They are all well sire.”

“…I should have grandchildren. My son should be having them now.”

“I know sire…”

“So what are you here for Mrs. Posen? What of interest has happened in the world today?”

“We have been improving the methods of government. Mostly about how we tax people.”

wogu.jpg

“Good good…you know…I think we are handling the economics of the new world wrong. We need more control over the trade routes. Furthermore I don’t like how Great Britain is getting into the game. We have to push them all out.”

“I see sire. I will put the idea out amongst the nobility and see what we can come up with.”

rw1a.jpg

“And what of the fleets? Are the new ships coming along?”

“Yes sire. The hulls for ten more galleons are already being built all across Sweden. We have not replaced all of our caravels yet with frigates but it is only a matter of time.”

“Wonderful. If we end up in conflict with Castile we will need a great fleet.”

“Bad news on the matter of nations with large fleets. Great Britain established a colony near to ours within the northernmost parts of the New World. A small bleak outpost but one that remains there nonetheless.”

“Damn them…did I not just say that we need to increase our efforts in the new world? Did I not just say that?”

“You did sire. We will take immediate steps to do that.”

“Hmph…what about…our enemies?”

“Well Hungary seems to not see us as one any longer. They have left the coalition that was assembled against us. Furthermore Great Britain just came off of a devastating loss to France which has broken up some of their power on the Isle. With our success in bringing the Cherokee into our nation we are well suited to strike against them. Weaken them further and perhaps we could…oh dear.”

“What? Speak quickly.”

“Their leader is Queen Elizabeth of Lancaster. If she dies right now it would put Great Britain into a union with…Russia.” That had the King’s attention.

“We must not permit this! Wait wait…if Russia is in a position to claim their lands then…their position is weak. We could make a claim on the throne of Great Britain. Then should their Queen die we would fight Russia…hmm.” The King paused. A dangerous prospect. “How old is the Queen?”

“She is 36.” He would have preferred that she be much older. “In terms of soldiers we can form about three quarters the full sized forces of Russia. We have a great technological edge over them though. We have stronger allies.

“…damnit do it. Get us a claim to that throne Mrs. Posen. I don’t care who you have to pay for it make it happen.”

“As you command Sire. By the time I return the Cherokee lands will be ours, their soldiers ours, and we will have a claim to the throne of Great Britain.”
