Additional forces were committed to Yugoslavia instead of Finland to contain the Allies. The Bulgarian leader was upset that while his forces were holding down Greece, Germany had let them down and let Sofia fall. A response had to be arranged (and to keep Bulgaria from falling). However, shortly after two additional divisions were deployed (1 mechanized, 1 armored) Helsinki fell in Finland.
German High Command took a look at the situation. Behind closed doors it was acknowledged that it was always assumed Finland would fall. The diverted Soviet attention and rare materials were nice, but it was never expected they would hold this long. Of more pressing concern was an allied foothold on Europe. That had to be addressed before more units started appearing. A single new mechanized unit was to be given to the Fins to help them hold out. Once the Allied invasion was contained, an additional mechanized and two armored divisions would be deployed to Finland to retake Helsinki.
The situation was even more depressing when viewing the Pacific. The Americans seem to be advancing with almost no resistance from the Japanese
It was not turning out to be a very promising Fall/winter.
Surprisingly, instead of landing in Yugoslavia where their advance was slowly stalling, the American landed in Anzio, which was surrounded by Axis garrison troops. After a stubborn beach defense, the Americans surrendered.
To underscore the fact that 1945 was not ending well, Finland surrendered. They decided they would rather become a Soviet puppet than continue the war. The newest German mechanized unit was allowed to send its personnel back to Germany by trawler, but its equipment was surrendered to the Soviets.
Not all Fins agreed with the diplomatic move and there were pockets of resistance. Unfortunately, when turning puppet any units that chose to not change sides lose ALL organization. Several pockets were quickly destroyed, despite an emergency naval sortie by the Kriegsmarine to evacuate some of them, taking 4 Finnish divisions with them.
In a bit of good news, another 3 Finnish divisions were able to make it to German supply lines and continue fighting. In a bit of an 'F you!' jab, a single German division marched on and took an undefended Murmansk. Several fuel and material depots were destroyed before the unit moved back to Petsamo.
With the help of allies (Croatia's contribution barely counts as help) the Allied invasion had been contained. Sofia was about to be retaken and the American forces were surrounded and destroyed.
The Allies were slowly forced back to their original landing province and defeated. Their attack had been well timed to divert Axis reinforcements badly needed for Finland - which no doubt allowed Finland to fall. Now Germany will run out of rare materials sooner than before.
Also, the swiftness of the advance, the worthlessness of the Slovakians and the ire of the Bulgarians dictated that additional forces be stationed in Yugoslavia. Two additional infantry units and one armored division would be permanently stationed around Dubrovnik.
