Is it me or are there just to many achievements in HOI4? After playing a long time and trying to get the achievements I am still on 25% done. Got some very hard to get achievements like "treading the narrow Path" and "last for a thousand years". But still the achievements are hard to get and some even look impossible to me.
How far are you with the achievements? Some suggestions for "30 minutes of hel" achievement? (like to do the hard onces first... easy onces will come by just playing the game)

No and I need more for content

The amount of achievements is fine tbf especially since they're optional and there's many a guide on how to do them if you look. Even if you didn't want to follow a guide the achievements and difficulity is fair, even if there isn't an obvious strat there is always a way to do them.

And hey atleast we don't have 318 achievements like EU4 has. (Looking at you post-patch Three Mountains and Eat Your Greens)

First advice: be patient. Trying to rush things will only lead to frustration and mistakes. Consider the achievements a challenge, not an obligation, and enjoy finding a way to get them. When you go achievement hunting, you either win or you learn. Sometimes you might just get screwed by the warscore and peacedeal system and come join the rest of us in our complaints about it :)

For "30 minutes of hel", the "easiest" strat is to turn fascist immediately provoking a civil war and joining the Axis. Then take Lithuania and reform the Commonwealth, and then, buildup and form a defensive line for when the soviets come knocking (but don't call Germany into the war). Hold them as long as you need until you drain their equipment, and then counter attack doing as many encirclements as you can. Do collabs on them until you get 100%. Then, when you defeat them, annex everything.

Now that you have a huge industrial base, and lots of manpower, buildup for some time and when you are ready, attack Germany. You should have plenty to inflict more than 1.8 million casualties.

Good luck!

132 achievements, the game will have been released for over 66 months by the time the next expansion comes out which only means 2 per month - not a huge ask in my opinion when you can get a few per run depending how you play. Yes starting now and looking back it's a lot but it's a steady amount of content for those that want it and an understandably high amount if you're starting now.

EU4 is around 3 per month
CK3 is more than 5 per month :p

I did a few achievements early on, but haven't attempted much less complete any in years. I just enjoy my core game play mods too much to be confined to vanilla ironman. And the achievements just struck me as pointless.

I'd be curious to learn from PDX's usage data what percentage of players actually attempt/complete more than just a handful of achievements. My guess as for why we haven't seen new ones in a while is because most people don't do them.

I play for achievements since 8-9 months and I don't do almost anything else in HOI4 now. This is a great fun for me :) A few tips from me to have some entertaiment:

1. Don't try take all achievements, if You can't do it! I have 115 now, a few very interesting still left (Prussia of the Balkan + Balkans problem solved, which I try now, Hugeslavia, One king, two crowns, Bevrijding, Go ahead, Macau my day), but I know, that probably not all are within in my reach. Probably I will leave Putting the band back together, because I don't play on non-historical and I don't want to restart my game over and over again, Sun Tzu Reborn, because I don't like world conquest, One Empire from the same reason. I see no point in getting tired :)

2. At the begging, see some guides on wiki and YT. Wiki has very good and still actuall guides for every achievements. On YT there are a few very good players: Bittersteel, Feedback Gaming, Bubbles Zest, Spaniard, Taureor, Scrumpy Dawg, who show, how to take achievements...

3. ... And try to find You own way :) When I took my first achievements, I was trying to do exactly how was explained, but after that most of them I did according to my strategies. For example - Bad Romeance, one of my favourite achievements, on YT has a very good guides, but doing it was to hard for me. I found my own way and I was proud, how I have done it :)

4. Try to make interesting these achievements, which look not so tempting. Two India's achievements are a good example - You can sit in Asia, waiting to become dominion, research nuclear weapon and wait, until Japan comes to You, but I think, it will be very boring. I always try to play very aggresive, so when I have done it, I defeated Japan, rescured Allies in Africa, Near East and Balkans and I dropped nuclear bomb on Berlin, what ended a war :)

5. Try to do something different from time to time - not always the same. Treading the Narrow Path - You can do it, simply becoming communist and joining Axis, but when I play Netherlands, I have joining to Axis and helping them to defeat Allies almost every time. So I did something else :)

6. Try to take as many achievements as You can in one run - thanks that You avoid a situation, when You play almost this same game, or You do something that you could do on the occasion. Good example - Destroyer of the World You can take with the other achievements with nuclear weapon. Or We build it in one day - in every long game.

Have a good fun!

Personally I don't really give two flips about achievements in most of my games. They're a fun thing to obtain but I just wanna have fun playing the game. With HOI4 the way the achievements are set up I can't have fun playing the game if I'm trying for the achievements so after digging into them a bit when the game launched I just abandoned them.

That being said: There isn't such a thing as "Too many achievements". If you like achievements then more is better. Some are easy or even trivial some are hard and hunting them is fun.
If you don't like achievements or don't care you can ignore them regardless if there is only one or if there are 1000.

The amount is fine since you have the base game achievements plus a set for each dlc. The game has been going for a while.

I just wished they didn't go for pure rng based achievements like "Putting the band back together" were what you do doesn't really matter, tone down the conquer the world achievements.

I'm at 120 now, with 3 left for the US and another 3 for Australia, so will run out soon. I find that I've still been learning tactics recently though. About 10 achievements ago doing Finnish Him!, was the first time that I started using request lend lease and got tens of thousands of free infantry equipment from the Axis. I did the same as anarchist Spain in my last run, which made a lot less sense, considering that they were giving me guns to kill their own volunteers.

And hey atleast we don't have 318 achievements like EU4 has. (Looking at you post-patch Three Mountains and Eat Your Greens)
Yeah, at 239 I still only have 75%. I haven't played EU:IV much lately, what patch made Three Mountains harder?

Bevrijding is mostly about holding against Japan. I ended up restarting because I got so annoyed at the garrison AI, because it was moving troops around all of the time. Since then I do all garrisons manually. One king, two crowns was painful too, because I had to invade the US in the late 1940s to finish the Allies. I generally enjoy any Balkan achievements and I found that the way that you can play as Portugal rather unique for Go ahead, Macau my day.

Thank all. Indeed some are so time consuming other learn you some parts of the game techniques. Some are just silly to do. I will take one advise from all of this. Just play the way I normally do to get them. Hope NSB will give some nice new once / historical onces.
Again thanks for all the replies.

You and me pal.

Most achievements for HOI4 were easily done though. Nothing to be compared with EU4.
Yeah I'd say only about 20% are on the bullshit level of achievements in HOI4.

In EU4, that % is probably 35-45%.

In EU4, that % is probably 35-45%.

I have wasted 1-2 days to get a single achievement many times on EU4. Sometimes, even a week, of trying diferent strategies.

In HOI4 nothing really changes, or makes the game terribly harder. I have been beating the allies/Uk pratically the same way since start (producing transports with 1 factory since game start and using paratroopers with air superiority when the brits got their aircraft busy elsewhere, lol). There were some achievements that took a lot of time and retries, because the AI prefered to choose a diferent hist path (like the 'bringing back the kaiser/habsburgs/ottomans'), but other than that nothing big as beating the Ottomans on EU4 as a tiny nation by yourself.

In years past, I ignored achievements in games entirely; I used to regard them as a "cheesy" ploy on the part of the developer, and in some cases that may be the case. I picked up 7 Days to Die a couple years ago and had great fun with it, and it was that one I think where I learned that pursuing achievements can be fun. I think when a game is an inherently "good game" and the developer understands HOW and WHY their game is good (as well as perhaps understanding the ways in which it is deficient), AND if the developer has some creative minds on staff, it is possible to come up with quite a "Barrel Full of Monkeys" batch of Achievements. Given that this turn of phrase is either an Americanism or an Anglo-specific phrase, it is perhaps appropriate to clarify what it means:

Very amusing or diverting, as in That video game was more fun than a barrel of monkeys. This expression, first recorded in 1895, alludes to the playful behavior of these primates.

There is an implication which the definition doesn't fully clarify that the fun or amusement is "not serious," or "inconsequential." I think that this aspect of the term is the key reason I find it applicable to the concept of "Achievements" as they manifest in well-conceived formulations. Achievements are in some sense antithetical to the game design principles which have historically characterized "historical war gaming," i..e., being VERY SERIOUS! The point of old board games like Victory Game's "Vietnam 1965-75" or titles like Avalon Hill's "Struggle of Nations" or "Third Reich" was to be AS SERIOUS! as possible, i.e., a bit more like Chess, except with far more complicated game mechanics. The idea of farcical or comedic "Achievements" is antithetical to these sorts of games, and I think that originally PDX developed games more from this approach.

However, there were also games back in the day such as the original "Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay" which marketed itself with some clearly tongue-in-cheek motifs such as Mohawk adorned dwarf and the sub-title of "A Grim World of Perilous Adventure" . . . which is to say that: elements of black comedy, surreal comedy, satire and camp are nothing new and they can be applied to game design quite effectively, and have been for decades. So that to me is how Achievements can be appreciated: some of them might just be bland milestone achievements like "Friend in Need," but others are specifically mean to breach the "Fourth Wall" such as "Hugeoslavia," and countless other ones which are far more involved and challenging to achieve. The developers of HoI4 are FULLY aware of the games biggest "deficiency," which is arguably a deficiency of ANY game of this sort (a sandbox historical grand strategy game run on a PC and not a Uni Quantum machine with the latest actual artificial intelligence running the opponent entities): if a player pushes the envelop outside of history the game very quickly become ahistorical. The ethos which PDX are demonstrating by having come up with completely ahistorical and even somewhat silly Achievements like "Team America," or "Braaiinns" and countless others, is that: you can have fun with our game even if you choose to play ahistorically, or as ahistorically as the game rules will ultimately allow.
