~ A Time to Kill ~
Christmas Offensive
Kaiserslautern, Germany

cvimyqo8.jpg

Mud and dirt flew up into the hair, some sticking and weighing down the already heavy boots that were tied tight to Charlie's feet. The loud sound of machine gun and rifle fire drowned out all other sounds besides the explosions of artillery shells that continued to pour down over the area.

The blood pumping to his head helped drive him on, ignoring the bullets whizzing by him, the man in front or beside him being cut down, all that mattered was that he get across this barren expanse of land and into the other trench. Once he got there, well, he would have to kill the Germans, then repeat the process.

Quickly the other trench began to come in view. Loading up another round he fired, the bullet driving hard into the skull of the German in front of him. Taking a deep breath he dropped to the ground, right before the slope that lead up-wards and then into the German trench. Rolling over on his back he loaded another round, covered in mud.

“Charlie!” he heard someone whisper. Looking around he saw five other men from his company, and Goose.

“Private, get over here.” The company commander, a man named Williams said, in a low whisper so as to not alert the German’s to their position. Slowly Charlie turned back over and crawled through the mud, hugging the ground to keep out of sight.

“Good to see your alive private.” Williams said, fixing the bayonet on his rifle. Looking over all who was in the group Williams pointed up toward the machine gun nest close by.

“That gun emplacement is holding up the advance on this side of the flank. So far the only company able to make any headway on this side is the Richmond company, and their pinned down in fire fight.”

“So we take out that gun…”

“and we give the rest of the guys a better fighting chance.” Goose finished.

“Right, so follow my lead.” He said, taking out several small makeshift hand grenades, made out of old soda cans, and handing them out to the men. Making a motion with his hand each of the men slowly crawled up to the slope and tossed on small explosives into the trench. Several shouts came out before a series of explosions ripped through the tench.

Scrambling to their feet the men jumped over the levee and into the trench. Driving his bayonet into the chest of one of the fallen Germans, he pulled the bayonet out and smashed the but of the gun against another's head before moving down the line toward the gun nest.

Getting there. The war needs to end for the Confederacy.

The combined efforts of France and the Confederacy had finally payed off during the Christmas Offensive. The attack had kept the Germans reeling, but it was in sense a cake walk. Casualties were daunting, on both sides, yet it was what was needed to break the German war effort. The main goal of the offensive was to do what it was named for, bring the war to an end by Christmas eve of December, 1917, that was the one part of the plan they failed to do.

The smoke would settle over the battlefield and new battle lines would be drawn. The offensive had made considerable gains in ground, cutting into Southern Germany like a well sharpened knife. The allied forces then settled in for what would, hopefully, be the line they had to hold to bring the Germans to their knees.

While the offense was a success in ground taken, it made problems for the allies when Belgium, who had taken major casualties in their attacks due to slacking by French commander, made a peace agreement with Germany, allowing the troops that would be guarding that front, to pour down onto the new defensive line.

Despite the setback that was the loss of the Belgium front, the new line was becoming an solid wall of guns and dirt. It also saw the rise of, in the Confederacy, several brave and intellectual individuals, one being the brash, darings and jingoistic commander George S. Patton.

Rising quickly through the ranks, George S. Patton gained a reputation as being one of the bravest and most distinguished men of the Army of Northern Virginia. His tactics and amazing ability to lead and deal with stressful situations quickly and efficiently earned him C.S. Distinguished Service Medal and the C.S. Distinguished Service Cross, as well as a promotion to a full colonel in Confederate Military.

Despite the Confederacies own little hero's piping up the situation was beginning to get grimmer. The German attack’s continued to keep coming and coming, wave after wave and then it stopped.

The war would last from January of 1918 to April 1st of 1918 when, not due to any great military victory, Germany surrendered. Historians would credit the end of the war with the victories gained in Africa and the sudden change of luck the Germans experienced, but the real reason was because of the people.

The British would be the true reason, which their attacks may have failed, but their domination of the shipping lanes had forced the German people to their need through starvation. Revolts had popped up all over as the Kaiser refused to make peace when he could have gained something more favorable, but it all eventually came to an end when the people and the Kaisers own generals forced him to abdicate the thrown and a new democracy was proclaimed, Germany would be free of a king, but would be dominated by the following repercussions put on them by none other than a vengeful France.

[ Europe and Africa after “The Great War” and The Treaty of Versailles ]

The end of the Great War saw the collapse of three empires, and strangely the rejuvenation of the one. Revolts in Germany forced the Kaiser to abdicate the thrown and a new Democracy was called, the nation caving into the French demands and were forced to sign The Treaty of Versailles, which striped them of most of their overseas colonies, forced them to take full responsibility for the war and pay massive amounts of money back to the allies to cover the cost of the war.

Russia had fallen into the chaos of Revolution earlier, before the war was over during the Bolshevik revolution. During the wake of a bloody civil war the Bolsheviks, a communist faction, was able to seize power and with the Treaty of Brest-Litosk Russia officially pulled out of the war. This treaty was by far hard on the new Government, forcing them to succeed vast stretch’s of land across Ukraine, Poland and around the Baltic Sea. During this wake of bloodshed and opportunity the people of Ukraine, Finland, Georgia and Azerbaijan declared their independence from Russia, creating some of the first of what would later become many more new nations, if only for a brief time.

Austria collapsed because of internal strife, having been pardoned by France who was looking to hurt Germany, not Austria. Despite that fact, the Austrian Empire collapsed, leading to the formation of Yugoslavia, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, limiting the nation now to its Austrian core lands and its holdings in Italy.

The most unique case of the war was the case of the Ottoman Empire, or more commonly known as “The Sick man of Europe.” In which the War had apparently cured. The Ottomans participation in the war had seemed to unify the people in there cause, rejuvenating the sick man of Europe. Like Austria, the Ottomans were given amnesty, mainly since they were not defeated by the allies, the pulled out paying the costs of the war, while retaining all of their territory and even benefiting from the Brest-Litosk treaty, taking control of some Russian lands in the Caucasus.

Europe would be a different place, after the Great War, border would be redrawn, and new seeds of hatred would be sown. As for the Confederacy, the nation was simply glad it was all over, and their debt to Great Britain would be fulfilled in its entirety.

Yea, I know, but The Ottomans didn't actualy Loose so they didn't suffer any loss, actualy they annexed most of Greece. Ive been fiddling around an idea to give Yugoslavia the rest of the cores they have on the Ottomans, but I dont want to do anything gamie...eh maby start a war or somthing, I don't know.

Ave atque vale Imperial Russia. :(

Glad the CSA is at peace at least. :)

I think Britain, France and the CSA are even now.

Nice tale my good sir! I hope that Charlie can make peace with his folks and it shall be interesting to see on what happens in the future. I am predicting possibly some kind of C.S Fascist regime myself.

Why?

Quite simply, the C.S has been in the war longer than the U.S and taken more casualties with nothing but "honour" repaided. Certainly, the people will demand answers.

Would be interesting if you can design such a scenario but if not, pop a Fascist Party into power before converting.

Just an idea. Good to seek the Ottomans still in the game. They should make for an interesting World War II. ;)

Also, did Japan gain anything?

Heard that, not to mention the CSA has shown itself a true world power.

So does the tale come to an end? Or will you continue into the 20's and 30's and maybe even HOI2?

The tale certainly doesnt end here, you should expect to see Dixie through to the very end, or at least until as far as HoI2: DD will let me go :D

Well actualy, the war really boosted the nations economy, ive went up two spots on the Great Power stage, now #6, and my industry and military boomed like crazy, despite the huge loss of life, it really help me in the long run.

I will be using CSBadass's Confederate Armagedon mod to continue into Doomsday, and in it Huey Long is basicly a dictator, only the CSA is still a democracy, but we will see, I still got what, 30 more years or so ahead of me?

edit: Oh, Japan didn't get anything, Germany had no colonies in Asia, so nope, but there still a world power.

You got nothing out of it, not even reparations???

I got indimides (sp?) from the Ottomans, but other than that, nope. The whole idea would be somthing like what would happen in real life, I mean, the U.S. didn't get anything out of WW1 did they? Nor did any of the British Commonwealths, which since Britan is responsible for the Confederacies continued survival, there almost to a degree, a commonwealth...only they could kick Britans butt if they ever tried anything :p ....unlike Canada or Austrailia...

Australia got New Guinea and the Solomons.
Canada didn't get anything, but then again, at the time both didn't care because they were both part of a greater British Empire. and Britain had prevailed and was larger than ever.

~ Confederate Rebith ~

The Confederacy after “The Great War” would be a new nation, a nation of greater moral standing and self determination to do whatever it takes to insure that The Confederate States would never be brought into anther devistating conflict like that ever again. This would be the stand that many a politicians would stand on, both Democrat and Whig, but unlike the Demorcat’s the Whigs didn’t have the power or votes to really do anything.

The 1920 election was carried by the Democratic canadate, John Nance Garner, winning a decisive victory over the Whigs came into the Confederate White House as the first Texan to hold the Presidential office.

~ John N. Garner ~
1920 – 1926

johngarneryr7.jpg

President Garner would bring a cetarin livly hood to the White House most other presidents didn’t. He was livly, vibrant and always active in the politics of the nation, brining a jingonistic, Texan flavor to the nations politics and policies. “The Great War” was devistating, costing the lives of thousands upon thousands of dixies finest young men, and the people were a bit more than disapointed that the Confederacy received so little for sending her children to die for another nations cause.

None the less President Garner was a fantastic orator and was able to rally the people behind the Confederacy, bringing into light a more honorable Dixie, fighting to fufill its debt to Europe and become the shining light of southern safistcation and honor in North America. In other words, The Confederacy was the White Kight in shining honor in a world full of Black kights.

Garner’s approach to a safer and better Confederacy lay in what the nation was proud of and prized most, its military. When “The Great War” broke out the Confederate military was truly tested and it passed with flying colors, proving the nations military prowness in its lead general Pershing and on the battlefield where its young men proved their ability to go toe to toe with greatest military power at the time, Germany.

While the C.S. ground forces were the countries pride and joy, its navy had slipped behind the other Great Powers. The new naval standered was set in the Drednaught, while at the time the Confederacy was still using the old Iron Clads, now useless agenst any modern navy. A new policy that security of the nation would rely on a strong army and navy would vibrate through the nations populace, all the eligible males would sign up for military duity if needed many more began volunteering for a part in the new Confederate navy which would tour Cuba, the Philipines and parts of British and French Africa and Asia.

Two years into his term the first of the Confederacies modern navy was ready for action and began a tour of the states along Mississppi River and other rivers that allowed for the new boats to travel down. The prize of the navy was the C.S.S. Confederate States, a remake of the old wooden battleship that was sunk in the War of Northern Agression. Four more were also deployed to form the new C.S.N. Atlantic Fleet, the first step to make the C.S.A. a modern naval power

csabattleshipskq2.jpg
[The C.S.S. Confederate States and North Carolina at a checkpoint along the Mississippi]

The country after the war boomed, people were more active now and a stronger union among the states had been formed as a result, in short, the thousands sacraficed had made nation stronger, as apposed to weaker such as in the case of France.

The rest of the world would not be developing as smoothly and prosperous as the Confederacy it would seem. The situation in Eastern Europe was becoming increasing hostile and volital. The breakaway republics of Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Georgia that ceded from Russia during the fall of the Empire were soon overtaken by “The Red Tide”, or similar Bolshavik revolutions.

Not long after they all returned to motherland and the United Socialist States of Russia, or the U.S.S.R. was formed. The once weak, backwards nation of Russia had been turned into a monster. The Communists in power were quickly industrializing the nation, but at what cost? The increasingly hostile Soviet Union began attacking and annexing its neighbors, going as far as reaching into the Indians ocean and annexing the country of Oman in Arabia, it would appear a new threat was arrising from the old.

Meanwhile tensions were beging to arise once more in the Balkans, where the new nations began having diplomatic confrontations with the revived Ottoman Empire, who contorled a large part of the Balkan lands that, mainly Yugoslavia, had claims too.

Regardless of the rising tensions and threats Europe had traded three empires for, the Confederacy was concentrated on itself and its affairs, not Europes, after all as far as they were concerned they fufilled there debt to Europe and no longer needed their aid to remain a lasting power, the Confederate States of America was here to stay, and their was nothing anyone could do to change that. Not unless they wanted to ruin themselves in the process.

Cactus Jack! Glad he gets to be president this time around.

~ I’m on my way ~

“Stop here, I will walk the rest of the way, thank you.” Charlie said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the money for the cab driver. Opening the door he stepped outside and took a deep breath of the warm North Carolinian air, watching as the automobile turned around and speed back off to the city, kicking up dust as drove off.

The old dirt road was the same on he used to walk as child, untouched by the modern world, save for the new automobiles that were becoming all the rage in the states. The memories seemed to flood back to him, memories of walking to school everyday, memories of playing with Ben and the other children by the old oak tree in meows that separated his old home from rest of the houses and the town.

Of course that was all gone now, Ben had died, the other suffered the same fate or had moved away, the world had changed rapidly from a simpler time. Walking along he could not help but think back, back to those memories, back to his brother’s death.

A gentle breeze began to blow as he approached the small villa he had grown up on; nothing had seemed to change about the house, still as quaint as ever. Stopping at the beginning of the driveway that lead up to the house he began to second-guess himself.

“It’s been all these years now, how can come home.” He thought to himself, the stain of what he had done to his parents when he left burned a place in his mind, always there reminding him of what a bad son he had been. The front door swung open as he heard his mothers voice saying something to his father, he panicked and ducked down behind a hedge that marked the entrance to there house and land.

Quietly he watched his mother water her flowers, the same ones she had planted since the time of the war. There were four roses, beautiful roses that she had planted, each one for each year of the war, she had written him telling him of her project but he had never had the courage to write her back.

“I can’t believe im hiding from my own mother…” Charlie said to himself, picking up the slack on his bag strap that was digging into his shoulder. Standing up he brushed the dirt off his new officers uniform, reaching the rank of corporal before the war ended for his bravery in Germany.

Suddenly an overwhelming fear came over him, one that he had not ever experienced, not even in the heat of battle, he feared his fathers wrath more than any German machine gun. His mother was still watering the flowers when he approached her, putting his hands on her shoulder and whispering “mom”.

Whipping around she smashed the tin watering can over his head, frightened at first before realizing who it was and what she had done. “Oh my dear god Charlie!” she shouted, opening up her arms, the watering can still in her hand.

Holding his hands up he prepared for another strike to the head, a large burse was already starting to form, when she wrapped her arms around her son and crying.

“Its okay mom, its okay, I’m home.” He said, wrapping her in his arms and squeezing her tight.

“What in Sam Hill is going on out here!” he heard his father shout, the loud sound of his boots crashing on the wooden floors of the house as he made his way to the door and out into the garden. Jonney stopped, his weathered and wrinkled face starred in amazement, there standing before him was his son.

“Father…I’m home..”
