There is a completely different thread for complaining about coalitions, so please do it there.

I would like this thread to show the mechanical breakdown of coalitions, so that they can get fixed.

1) Entering the coalition
-- with the increased AE, the 'base' amount of AE needed to join a coalition should rise a bit. This number didn't change, despite changes to AE.

2) leaving the coalition
-- There are still situations where countries refuse to leave coalitions, even when they are no longer outraged (or threatened) and have 0 AE. I've had a country convert to the 'heart you' diplo stance and then stay in the coalition. Either they love me, or they want to hurt me, pick one.

Sometimes all it takes is the player to send a diplomat to improve relations for 1 tick and the country will leave. I'm assuming that it's more about the game not updating the status unless it's being affected.

Mechanic Silliness

Or, how to mess with coalitions.

1) In a defensive war, the whole coalition appears to defend the target. This is good, at least on the face of it.

2) In an offensive war, the coalition can be fragmented very easily. If an OPM/small nation declares the war, the first 'big' nation to take over as war leader then blocks all other coalition members from joining. Sometimes you get everyone, other times you only get 1 other nation - despite it being a huge coalition.

I would like to see a situation where only the 'larger' nations in the coalition can declare the Punitive war. So it'll be ok for small nations to join, but only the large (possible war leaders) nations in the coalition would trigger the war.

3) Soundly beat down coalition members don't leave the coalition, but should.

This isn't just a 'coalition got defeated, so leave it' situation. This is the 'country got full sieged for 10 years and has no military' sort of problem. If a country that has no military, manpower or income (if went bankrupt) stays in the coalition after the war, they are subject to abuse.

It's fine if the country rejoins the coalition at the point where the truce finishes, but staying in it during the truce will hurt them.

The reason this is a problem is that you can coalition chain war your way through the same set of countries.

Coalition X fight you. You win, fully. Country A joins the coalition. You declare war on country A and get to fully siege out Coalition X+a again. rinse repeat until you've taken every province out of coalition X. Pop out countries as vassals as needed. It's a great way to rip apart big countries.

4) If the War leader of a coalition gets vassaled (in a different war) the coalition war becomes a normal war with the new Overlord of the old war leader being in charge.

If you're fighting a huge coalition, and you can then peace out every country individually? That's a bug.

You post is one of the many pointing the obvious. At this point we have to wait a few months, so that Johan is too busy with Runemaster to interfere with EU4. Maybe then we can begin to see the light.
