Because you must edit your Grand Campaign file. Then you´ll find the initials of the playable powers. Type 'PRU' (Prussia) instead of 'FRA' (France) and you will be able to play Prussia, for instance. In the forum you will find a list of the countries´ initials

I know I, personally, won't have much of a problem editing files, but, on behalf of potential buyers that might not, I really think it'd be a good idea t'have this option made much more readily available...limited choices in a game of such scope will be a big turn-off to the potential gamer.

After reading just how many hours are spent playing the game (I shudder at the number of hours that Oranje spent playing his Dutch campaign that he wrote his AAR on), I suspect that eight major countries, plus 100 minor nations that can be edited to be playable, offers plenty of interesting challenges for more time than I'll be able to scrape together to play the game.
I just can't stop planning in my mind how I want to play England and plant my first colony halfway between where Vera Cruz and New Orleans are... That would be the gulf coast of Texas :)
Just dreaming until at least the 21st...

Just thought of something that would make playing just about any nation real easy, without any official updates.
I could quite easily make a couple of extra 'scenario's' (which are not really scenario's at all, because all I'd do would be to edit the .eug file) and make those available.
That way I figure I could produce an Italian, French, German, Eastern Europe, and Muslem thingy.
These would each have 8 playable minor countries, other than the ones already available.
I'll see what I can do.

Sweet idea, but one might run into problems. For instance, making an Italian scenario. I'd assume y'd have Tuscany, Venice, etc. available as major powers...problem is, you'd have a localized block of permanent states. If someone had the bandwith, the time, and a saintly soul, I suppose you could create a scenario for each available minor, with said minor as the only playable power. It's terribly inefficient, but the only way I see making the 'play as minor' feature easily available, short of a quick-fix editing program.

Yes I know, my solution would be a second best, but if all you needed to do was copy a few small additional files into a game directory to have say 40 additional countries available, that wouldn't be a bad thing now would it?

I fear maybe some misunderstood my suggestion. You wouldn't replace any files, or tinker with anything in the game.
Still when starting the game, you could choose 6 different Gc's, each with different playable countries. It wouldn't be very polished, but it would work and you wouldn't have to do any editing yourself.

Best I can come up with on my own, and I really think chances are slim that Johan will come up with the better answer in a patch, because he'll naturally want the start up screen to look good as well (with the right country maps, stories, strategy tips and all) and that would be really a lot of work (delivering in 5 language-versions already, and more on the way I guess).

I agree, they wouldn't be very suited for multiplayer, unless I mix them up a little, but if I do that you'll never remember what countries are in which scenario :(

This is kindof what I did right after getting the game. I made lots of versions of the GC with all possible countries that I would ever want to play as the sole major. I just called them by the country name, eg The Hansa.eug or whatever, so now I just boot up the game and pick one :D

Oranje,
Maybe you could 'mix up' the countries by choosing ones from disparate parts of the map and then give each file a name using the short EU abbreviations of the country names. So if I wanted to play Tuscany, I would look for the campaign name with 'Tus' somewhere in it (along with seven other EU country abbreviations, so something like ScoTusHun, etc.). This could solve both problems.
