Excuse me if this is a gameplay feature I just don't understand, but is there a way to BREAK a non aggression pact, other than annulling a marriage? I can't seem to find one, which leaves medieval europe in the peculiar situation that no families who are related by marriage anywhere can wage war on eachother. Which, quite clearly is more than a little silly.

Was trying to find it as well.
My son was independent from me, because my liege revoked my title and gave it to him. Then my son died and my grandson was give the duchy, but he is an idiot that married some unknown family matrilineally and he went in hiding - so I wanted to press my claim and I couldn't. We even have bad relations, so I should be able to do it.

Would really, really like to second this and bring it to dev's attention. I'd be happy to pay truce-breaking costs, or whatever, but being locked into an NAP because some AI-controlled family member decided to marry into my next conquest target's family is really dissatisfying.

Non-Aggression Pacts only last one generation. They can be renegotiated afterwards for another two, but this isn't done automatically. So if you marry your daughter to a Duke, that is a pact between you and the Duke. Your heir, and the Duke's heir, don't have to honour it.

It'd be neat if we could break a pact (albeit, at a huge penalty), but I don't see this as a big enough issue. There are plenty of fish in the sea, so simply don't marry your relatives off to people who you plan on warring with in the same generation.

The solution as far as I can see would be a "Break Non Aggression Pact" diplomatic interaction that has a prestige cost. Because realms that had married often DID go to war.

You can literally dissolve an alliance at any time, so long as you aren't allies in a war.
I am nit talking about dissolving alliances, I am talking about the fact that allies automatically join their allied wars even if you don't want to intervene or if you are planning to betray them which combined with the non-aggression pact problem is a letdown of the diplomacy system

I'm starting to wonder if the inability to break NAP's was put in specifically to help balance the coalition system. In one of the threads about how to deal with coalitions, it was suggested to use your marraiges to set up strategic NAP's to keep some countries out of it.......so if those NAP's could be broken then that would be a problem. If this is indeed the case, I personally would prefer nerfing, or even doing away with, the coalitoin system and then allowing me (and the AI) to break NAP's.

I betrothed my son to the king of Scotland's daughter who died before they both came of age, then his son the king of Scotland got himself imprisoned in a war meaning that my daughter in-laws claim is now valid. Is there any way around the NAP because even if my current ruler dies my son still can't press the claim because of the pact

Unbreakable NAPs (along with automatic call-to-arms from alliances) is a recent change that is widely reviled on the forums. It is one of the worst design decisions ever made in the history of the game and completely inconsistent with the original design philosophy of the game. Whoever thought this was a good idea needs to have his career re-evaluated.

Apparently they're fixing it soon. It's been like this for months now and I refuse to play until they fix it.

The best way to get rid of NAPs, is to simply dispose of the character of the marriage connection that creates the NAP. So if you have a daughter married to the king of France, giving you two a NAP with one another, make sure that one of the married characters ends up in a tragic accident.

However, we are planning on adding an additional "Break Non-Aggression Pact" diplo action as well. To make those inconvenient NAPs a tad bit easier to get rid of.

For breaking the NAP? No. But you will get the regular prestige penalty along with a negative general opinion modifier. So rulers will think less of you for doing it. You will also not be able to get a new NAP with the same character again.

Well there is a random event that fires when some foreign courtier acts rude in your court. You write a complaint to their liege, and if he responds negatively you can choose to break the NAP.

No idea. I generally play my games in ironman so I don't work with codes.

I think this also occurs vice versa, when the foreign ruler writes a complaint about your rude noble. You answer rudely and he can choose to take a prestige hit or retaliate by breaking NAP. But then again the AI is who makes the decision.

Just keep in mind that the event to break NAP requires neither you or AI to back down. If you write the complaint and he complies with an apology you don't get to follow up with NAP breaking.

I'm starting to wonder if the inability to break NAP's was put in specifically to help balance the coalition system. In one of the threads about how to deal with coalitions, it was suggested to use your marraiges to set up strategic NAP's to keep some countries out of it.......so if those NAP's could be broken then that would be a problem. If this is indeed the case, I personally would prefer nerfing, or even doing away with, the coalitoin system and then allowing me (and the AI) to break NAP's.

It was put in to restrict player choice and make the game both less fun and less historical.
