Titular Kingdom of Aragon

Has the Byzantine Emperor, It seams I just acquired my first 2 counties in Spain and I can now create the Titular Kingdom of Aragon. I'm puzzled by this. What were the trigger conditions for me to have acquired this ability? Can any King aquire territory in Spain and thus be able to create this title? Or must you be an Emperor? It should be noted that Aragon doesn't exist as a de-jure territory anymore. It's territory has been part of Andalusia for hundreds of years at this point.

If a de jure kingdom disappears through de jure drift, it becomes a titular kingdom. Unless it had a religion or culture restriction before, the only requirement to create it is owning the capital and having enough duchies.

In this case I believe the trigger county/duchy is Barcelona.

Titular kingdoms are free prestige generators, really. You can make em, nobody desires them, they follow the same inheritance rules as your emperor title (yes even born in purple.)

Yeah the county I gained was Barcelona. I don't have the duchy. Should I worry about any vassal dukes I give the territory to making himself king of Aragon or is that prohibited because he's not independent?

I've found it useful in the past to give titular kingdoms to heirs to kingdoms I manage to invite to my court. I need to give kingdoms for them to inherit and become part of my empire, but I don't like giving real kingdoms because it makes them too powerful.

Yeah it is a nice trick if that vassal of yours will inherit an actual kingdom.

I think vassals will make the titular king title if they could but I'm not sure. Usually I make them immediately for the free uncontested prestige gains.
