Is there a way to edit the effects of the title tiers. The Byzantine Empire has an extra x2 effect, the mongols have no limits. How would I edit the demense modifiers, or are these hard coded? Can't find it in any file thusfar.

I believe all those things are hardcoded.

They are hardcoded.

The BYZA bonuses go with the tag. It is possible to mod a tag to display as any country name, CoA, and be creatable anywhere, tho. So if you really want to you could make England the country that gets the bonuses.

This must be frustrating to modders; this shouldn't be hardcoded. I've formed a very strong Western Empire and hold the titles of King of France, Burgundy, Italy and Germany. Effectively I've reformed the Western Roman Empire but I can't give myself the x2 Byzantine bonus without removing it from the Greeks. I guess the dual Empire glory days will have to wait for CK2, sigh.

Just conquering a lot of western Europe shouldn't give you that bonus.

The bonus for Byzantine Empire is based on the fact that the Byzantine Empire existed already for more then 600 years at the start of the game. With an extensive civil and administrative service.

In fact I think that recreating a Western Empire (and, more importantly, keeping it together) should be almost impossible and very hard to do (in CK2). Giving you a demesne bonus would rather make that easier.

But that is an entirely different discussion :)

Currently I hold France, Germany and Italy geograpically and I'm the only thing holding back the muslim invasions. The byzantine empire is crumbling sadly. I understand that the Byzantines get the bonus for historical reasons, I have no problem with that (you're talking to a history major here). It would be nice to have an added bonus since I have protected Europe for 2.5 generations though. It's frustrating when I offer protection to a border duchy, successfully defend thembut can't exact a "toll" from them. Ideally holding the border provinces would be best but not at the price of weakening myself at home. I really need the developed home provinces to maintain a balance of power, but I also need to build up frontier defences intelligently (AI building habits are >< at times).

I kinda want to have the discussion with my vassals "If you want to remain free give me some emergency powers; otherwise have fun dealing with the Emirs."

In any case I'm just disappointed that for any empire in the game the demense limits can't be modded in a straightforward manner. I frown at hardcoded limits. Iwas hoping to mod to a x3 kingdom bonus so my intrigue 6 ruler could hold 9 provinces.

kilarious

Side note: In a recent Byzantine game I had a good ruler and was able to hold 22 provinces (I held 20 all around Thrace). This was critical for fighting the Turks and the Mongols. They generally beat the crap out of the fringes of the empire but once they reached my powerful base they're power was crushed and the tide was turned. Guess I'm out of luck in the west.

Why don't you raise your vassal's armies and use them to crush your foes? It's not like the troops are lost to you in a province you give away.

I also figured it had to do with differences in governing styles. Western Europe used feudalism, while the Byzantines were more autocratic. The Emperor held far more power than any Western king, especally the Holy Roman Emperor.

You are most likely correct :)
