There are many illuminating threads speculating on EU3, with many good ideas and such. But, have Paradox already designed the game or not? I suspect so...

I suggest that we warn Paradox of poor design approaches. Post your ideas about what does not work at all, or what should not be carried forward from the legacy of EU1/EU2. :)

[btw, I beg forgiveness if this has already been done...]

I liked the quote used in the title of the thread - a bit of work to figure out a theme for the forum... ;)

OK, I'll be provocative...

DP sliders - what bollucks! Through 1.05, simply a cool feature and an exploit since the ai did not ever adjust them - but us human-types sure did...

Where does DP improve the game for SP (emphasis) that does not give the player an advantage that he/she already has in great abundance (the ai being pretty stupid and all...).

Why move this feature forward unless the ai will be improved?

Certainly the DP sliders are an advantage for the player, and certainly they are clunky and... odd. But let's face it, the game is just a sandbox, and messing with your DP settings adds to that aspect of it.

State Machine,
Okay, but in the game as the Timurids, domestic policy sliders doesn't give you any kind of advantage for the first 150 years. Moreover, as written in some other thread, DP is also designed to aid AI... which it does pretty good, with HRE minors for example.

I beg forgiveness too, since this post *has* already been done, but:

The naval game and the micromanagement of moving fleets round dinky seazones. It managed to be too fiddly for both the human and the AI, and the model isn't a good reflection of trade, sailing or naval warfare.

Because the sliders could be moved in isolation of everything that went on in the game they could be exploited.

Link everything in the game and that will cut down exploits

If they have pink flying elephants, why do they need a bridge?

Its hard to think of anything, so I'm also going to suggest that the navies were done badly. In particular the bits that could be improved are:
  • Exploration (both player and AI) - far to much micromanagement for the player and the AI just went from A to B ignoring attrition and "discovered" what was inbetween.
  • Naval combat. The fights themselves were good, but there wasn't much about blockading fleets in port, finding enemy fleets and being able to stop invasions using your navy. (at least in SP).
  • The AI. Unlimited range and no attrition. One or the other would be bad but acceptable but both combined lead to really strange results (like the Chinese fleets circling the UK rather than the other way around...)

I hated DP sliders for the simple fact that I always forgot to move them on time. If they do implement them in EU3, I sure hope it's either possible to "save up" on slider moves over the years, or there is some sort of alert message system for it.

Of course Paradox has already designed the game but we cannot help but voice our opinions on what we do and do not like or about waht we want to see in a game.

Two big things not to move forward to EU3 - CTDs and exploits. (Not too vague is it?) :D

Well I for one are concerned about this, if France is the only nation that has pink flying elephants then this could seroursly unbalance the game.
