Tips to increase performance ?

I recently deceided to get back into CK II after a humble bundle sale, so I picked up the DLC i was lacking, and thought, hey, CK II ran like butter on my older computer, so It should not be a problem...

Boy was I wrong, even at the start the game stutters like hell in the worldmap unless paused, and in general runs a tad slow ( I always use the diplo view and never the "pretty" mapmode.

I have a fairly decent computer, with a AMD FX8300@ 3.2Mhz (Octacore), 16 Gigs of ram and a Geforce GTX 970.
The Game is running of an SSD

I know PDX games are CPU intensive, but I was not expecting this.... Any tips to speed it up?

Hmm.

I know that can't be right. My computer is much weaker than your's and I run the game fine- better then most people on here.

Exit out of all other programs before playing. Maybe you have a program that takes up a lot of processing power open, like Photoshop?

A fresh restart improved it a bit, but not like it used to be, there seem to be hickups on certains days of the month (not only the usual 1st/2nd of each)

...on serious note, AMD not good for gaming, these days Pentium outright outperforms AMD.
Also I do not think games these days can still utilise x8 cores (unless things have changed its been a while since i build PC).

My current (6 month old), budget PC is i54690k 4.0GHz (OC); H80i water cooler; GTX750Ti... and it runs perfectly without any hiccups.
I'll probably upgrade to a better GPU once I hit issues but so far so good.
I dunno maybe its your AMD I heard they caused similar issues back when rome II TW came out. The i5's just seem to perform much better across most games.

Try overclocking your cpu that might help if you can get a decent OC.

I doubt it's the cpu. That chip is just fine for ck2. The symptom is more acute.


@op Try adjusting your refresh rate and running in different window modes. Those settings in that menu can be tricky . I know I had a similar issue when the game kept resting the settings and I had to adjust the ini file to read only. Who knows. May help

If you need be, just roll back a few patches using Steam Betas (pre-RoI for example, which should be 2.04), which will make a significant different the farther back you go. Using a performance mod might also come in handy- there's one on the CK2 Nexus that removes India and makes some other changes to be less intensive on your computer. Honestly though, your specs shouldn't be giving you that much trouble. You have a pretty decent machine and should probably be getting at least 100-150yrs before the lag sets in. Constant stuttering like you describe might be pointing towards something else, like a driver issue.

If you're using Windoze... Open up the windows task manager after the game loads. Goto the "Processes" tab and right click on ck2game.exe. Change "Set Priority" from "Normal" to "High". It will give the game executable more priority over the CPU than the crap windoze loads unnecessarily.

For even more of an improvement, you can temporarily stop some of the unnecessary junk services running using services.msc.
